Something simple can be greatly enhanced by low expectations while something much desired can be sunk by great expectations. Filmation Hordak is the former.

I did not care when he was announced. Hordak isn’t very high on my favorites despite being an important character in the mythos. I want all his fans to get their due – regular, Hurricane, & Buzzsaw (though I don’t know what they’ll do to make that last one different). We got an extra in Spirit, but there were still those clamoring for Filmation. Again, I’m all for fans getting their due. I just wasn’t all that thrilled.

Then he got here. Maybe it’s just that he’s cool in blue. Maybe it’s the great head sculpt in stark white. Maybe it’s that most of the figure hails from early on in the line when the figures were nicer (I miss that smooth ab piece, the exposed belly figures drive me crazy). Honestly, I’m not really sure what it is. But I do know the figure pops. I went from not caring about him to possibly making him my main Hordak in under an hour.

It’s silly, I enjoy the figure. I can’t explain it.

It’s particularly silly considering how much of the figure is a repaint. He’s mostly the standard Hordak. To get details right, he swipes parts from He-Man, Trap Jaw, Hurricane Hordak, & Flipshot. His dual armbands? Even that is only the one specifically molded for the left arm added sloppily to the right. In his standard configuration with two normal arms, this guy ain’t got a piece of new tooling on him. Even his one held accessory is reused, simply the basic Hordak staff in Filmation grey.

Once you swap out his normal left arm for his techno-arm, you still have the mish mashed upper arm from various donors, leaving the only new piece the forearm, a cannon that serves as counter to the right forearm that came with Hurricane Hordak, and a claw hand that lets the cannon serve as part of a functioning arm. That’s it. To make matters worse, the left cannon arm that comes with Filmation Hordak isn’t made to be compatible with the right cannon arm that came with Hurricane Hordak. No shared attachments. No swapping pieces. That’s a big lost chance for fun.

And yet, I still enjoy the figure. I can’t explain it. Continue to Page 2…

Worse still, a case could be made about what the figure lacks. Some folks wanted a matching techno arm for the right side. I could see that being cool. The bigger missed opportunity, that Mattel even acknowledged, was a more Filmation inspired noggin. I would’ve loved to see that, both because it would look cool and because the more robotic face would tie-in nicely with the techno-organic virus running through the bios. With Mattel promising we’ll get that head somewhere – I’m cool with this one. This way, we’ll get that head somewhere down the road and we still get this standard head in that same bone white. It wasn’t on purpose, but this could end being the best of both worlds.

Even without those “missing” parts, I still enjoy the figure. I can’t explain it.

Finally, Hordak did get one great accessory, and some serious new tooling for the SDCC release: the much needed Imp! I’m not sure if the scale on Imp is spot-on, but he does look great, particularly as well painted as my Imp turned out. The mischievousness is there in the sculpt, which is probably most important. He’s got some articulation, neck and the arms, but that did cause the arms to look a little funky unless they’re up. He also stands well which is great because there’s really no way to pose him or on Hordak which is disappointing, but Imp is welcome and will look great with Kowl, Broom, and, if I can ever snag him, Loo-Kee!

And then there’s the other little Imp. Not included in the package or in the online Hordak I ordered is Imp as a Treasure Chest. This was given away bagged at SDCC (though some folks weren’t even able to get that). Personally, I hate giveaways like this as I almost never go to conventions. What I find sillier is that the expressed reason for making them – as a little extra gift for attendees – gets collector’s goats.

Yes, the folks attending the con get the benefit of attending the con, they don’t need a gift for getting there, but that’s not the point. Mattel isn’t in the habit of gifts, Mattel wants to sell out of the con allotment and that’s what the incentive is for, “buy this here and get this extra thing”. I get it. I still don’t like it. Imp as a Chest is cool. I like that he’s hinged and can open. He can hold the ram stone or something. I’m happy I was able to pick it up for as much as I spent on the Hordak figure itself, ahem. I still don’t like the extra incentives though, whether for the reason Mattel give or for the real reason they do it.

Overall, I really can’t explain what I like about the figure so much. On paper, he shouldn’t be a win. He’s a repaint with scarcely any new parts. I wanted a “fun, out there” exclusive and he’s not that. Even the claw arm which should be fun and work with kooky attachments from other figures, it doesn’t. He would look cooler with a robot head. We didn’t get that. He is blue though. He is definitely blue. I mainly picked him up for Imp. I paid too much to get Imp as a chest, and, somehow, the figure still came through as the coolest part. I can’t explain it.

Recent MOTU Classics Reviews:

For all our MOTU reviews, check out our
MOTU Classics Collector’s Guide.

[7,34,10
178,1824,78,53,2406,20,16,2558,2566
Probably one of the most unexpected figures in the Masters of the Universe Classics line has to be Horde Prime. Since he never had much of a tangible body in the Filmation series, it seemed unlikely. But the 4H and Matty found a way.
