NECA\u2019s Godzilla 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"

While Bandai\u2019s been pumping out figures for the new Godzilla reboot, I still have yet to find one I really want to buy.\u00a0 Most are too small with minimal articulation and wouldn\u2019t fit in well with my collection, while most of the large figures are a turnoff due to their blatant action features.\u00a0 But when I wandered across NECA\u2019s version of Big G at Toys R Us, he seemed to hit that sweet spot of sculpt and articulation and I knew I had to buy him.<\/p>\n

\"gzil1\"<\/p>\n

Sculpt wise, this new Godzilla has a pretty interesting look.\u00a0 The combination of his thick body and trunk-like legs juxtaposed with his little head and stumpy feet give him that heavy beefcake look.\u00a0 It took a little getting used to, but after getting the toy and seeing the movie I\u2019m actually pretty happy with this design now.\u00a0 Sure he\u2019s got a bit more weight to him, but all Godzillas are a bit chubby (especially in that thigh area).<\/p>\n

NECA\u2019s sculpt is pretty dead on.\u00a0 The figure is covered in textured details that I didn\u2019t even catch in the theater.\u00a0 Probably the most interesting is just how many different types of scales the figure has.\u00a0 His large back fins are surrounded by a rough rock-like surface.\u00a0 His sides, legs and arms have a more traditional scaled look.\u00a0 His chest and the top of his tail are comprised of plate armor, while his feet and bottom of the tail are wrinkled skin.<\/p>\n

The head area is also equally textured with the outline of his skull along the eyes and cheek bones.\u00a0 He has a bit of a snubbed nose with tiny teeth outlining the upper and lower jaw.\u00a0 His tongue is sculpted separately in kind of an action position, and a bit further down the neck are his textured gills.<\/p>\n

\"gzil3\"<\/p>\n

Godzilla\u2019s a pretty decent size, standing just less than seven inches tall.\u00a0 He fits in nicely with other MonsterArts and Sci-Fi Revoltech kaiju, although he\u2019s just a tiny bit shorter than Burning Godzilla.\u00a0 Unfortunately this Godzilla looks tiny and almost overwhelmed when compared to NECA\u2019s new Pacific Rim figures.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

At first glance this figure might seem like a big black mess of plastic, but there are actually a lot of subtle paint apps that are only visible in the right lighting.\u00a0 The figure has been molded in black, but there\u2019s a really dark blue wash that covers most of his scales and helps the sculpt pop out a bit.\u00a0 What\u2019s even harder to see is the brown running down his chest and stomach.\u00a0 Aside from that, the rest of G\u2019s paint is in his yellow eyes, white teeth, and dark red mouth.<\/p>\n

Articulation on this guy is way better than I expected.\u00a0 His head, neck, shoulders, wrists, waist, hips, ankles are all a mix of single and double ball joints.\u00a0 His elbows and knees are swivel hinges, and his jaw is a regular hinge.\u00a0 The first three segments of his tail are double ball joints, while the last piece is made of bendy plastic.\u00a0 The range of motion that his hips and shoulders can pull off give the figure some great personality and allow for a bit of brawling and dynamic poses.\u00a0 For the first hour I had him I couldn\u2019t stop posing him in various dance moves or lounging positions.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately there are no accessories with this figure.\u00a0 I\u2019m assuming the budget was pretty much maxed out with the completely new sculpt and super long tail.\u00a0 But if NECA feels like re-releasing this guy, I\u2019d love to see one or two flame breath effects parts.<\/p>\n

For about $20, this figure is an excellent deal.\u00a0 Sculpt and paint does their jobs well, and the articulation makes him fun to pose and play with.\u00a0 The only figure that will come close to outshining this one is the upcoming MonsterArts, but he\u2019ll cost four times as much.\u00a0 That\u2019s more of a hard core market, while this NECA version is for the everyman who just wants a good Godzilla figure to hang out on the desk.<\/p>\n
