<\/a> We\u2019re wrapping up our Four Horsemen theme week with a look at a much anticipated edition to the 4H\u2019s Outer Space Men line: The Man from Earth! When the Colorforms Company debuted the OSM in 1968, Mattel\u2019s Major Matt Mason was flying high. So, basically, Earth was well represented in the \u201caction figure\u201d aisle. <\/p>\n

In modern times, the good astronaut hasn\u2019t made an appearance in quite some time, so once the 4H & Mel Birnkrant started adding characters to the classic property, it was only natural to add a human (or two) into the mix. After over forty years, we finally have the true Man from Earth, Captain Jack Asteroid.<\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

Let me get one thing out of the way before I dig in. I hate his name. I will happily file this opinion under my usual fuddy-duddiness. It just comes across as trying to be clever instead of actually being clever. It\u2019s like someone wants to giggle every time his name is said aloud. Maybe it\u2019s just my Kindergarten-teachin\u2019 wife rubbing off on me. She saw the packaged figure in the shipping box, shouted \u201ccool!\u201d and then immediately dropped her chin, looked at me and said, \u201creally?\u201d Yep, really. Anyway, I\u2019m not going to harp on it.* I\u2019m just going to call him Jack, but the name has given me the impression that he\u2019s kind of a jerk and you may notice that in the photos. Just puttin\u2019 that out there. <\/p>\n

* – The Jack\/Terra bio even takes a dig at folks like me by pointing out that the world could use more levity. Levity is something I usually try to provide here at IAT, but just not on this particular point!<\/em>

Name aside, the figure itself is awesome. Sure, it\u2019s mostly smart reuse. We\u2019ve got the Metamorpho\/Inferno body with its basic OSM spacesuit in human proportions and only a new head doing the heavy lifting, but that\u2019s exactly all Jack needed to be. The new head sculpt is great \u2013 I\u2019m not sure if the 4H were going for a specific likeness (how cool would young Mel have been here?), but he does look familiar to me somehow? Even if he\u2019s just a scratch head, he definitely looks like a cocky, space jockey\/adventurer. <\/p>\n

The articulation is still fine for the line. The Power Lords Soldiers and their injected ball-joint Glyos ports almost take away from the OSM, but the Glyos swivels can get a lot of jobs done just fine. The basic figure has 13 swivel joints thanks to the parts and 10 of those (neck, shoulders, wrists, waist, hips, and ankles) are useful for posing. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Paintwork on the figure was pretty solid. There were a few little slop areas where lines were missed, but those are exaggerated in my up-close pictures. In person, Jack looks slick in his orange space suit and black trim. I love the colors on the belt as well as the \u201cwings\u201d and Nasa-esque logos on his chest. I do wish the Earth logo on his chest was a little less dolphin-like. Colossus Rex had a fantastic Jupiter tampo on his armor. It\u2019s a shame something similar couldn\u2019t be done on this pace. <\/p>\n

Jack included a lot of gear inherited from Terra Firma. There\u2019s the three-part helmet which splits in half to be removed and has the flip-down visor. It\u2019s an oversized, but classic piece that fits the retro aspect of the line perfectly. I can see Jack flipping the visor down whenever he\u2019s done talking. \u201cWhat\u2019s that? I can\u2019t hear you in here.\u201d <\/p>\n

Jack also came with an American Flag and pistol, both also from Terra Firma. The Flag is a nice touch, but I do prefer the pistol. The 4H were genius \u2013 they painted Jack\u2019s gun in the same silver\/gold color scheme as Terra\u2019s but opposite. The pistols are a great sculpt and look great as a set thanks to the smart paintwork! <\/p>\n

Finally, what may be my favorite piece: the anti-gravity back pack. It is so retro it\u2019s like a flashback. It\u2019s essentially a giant magnet with energy radiating out that allows the Human Astronauts to do their thing. It looks amazing on their back, but I kinda like it more as a weapon! Unfortunately, the OSM hands don\u2019t have standard Glyos ports for their clutching hands and since the backpack uses a standard one to plug into their back \u2013 none of the OSM can hold it. Boo! The upside is that the Armorvor or any other Glyos guy can steal the ordnance for his own deal. I\u2019m still hopeful the 4H will make a connection piece that has one side scaled for the little accessories and a Glyos port on the other end. That\u2019s much needed!<\/p>\n

Overall, Jack is a fun figure. He looks slick with the others, his head sculpt is fantastic and fun to plop on all sorts of other Glyos bodies. Fun accessories. And the modern astronaut colors look slick on this buck too! It\u2019s more than enough to keep me interested in the OSM line \u2013 particularly when there are at least two more human astronauts mentioned in these bios here. I\u2019d love to see those released (though I\u2019d like to see a new female buck if we do get \u2018em, but more on that in Terra\u2019s review). Anyway, the only thing for me not to really like is the name and to go all highbrow and quote Shakespeare, \u201cthat which we call a rose; by any other name would smell as sweet.\u201d That’s definitely true here.
