At the outset, we also conceived the idea of a Retro Review, a feature where we’d spend some time on old toy from yesteryear (wait until you see SilntAngl’s review of the 1987 G.I. Joe Techno-Viper).

Well, the two ideas seemed fairly congruent and we decided that the first batch of Retro Reviews would work backwards from DC Classics Wave 7 until the beginning. That was the plan anyway. Some technical issues have forced us to skip Wave 7 (for now). So, what better than to get the most difficult-to-find, gnashing of teeth wave out of the way first? Yep, our very first retroview will focus on the ire of many a DCUC collector, the Wal-Mart Exclusive Wave 5.

Wave 5 was first sighted in late October, early November of 2008. While many collectors are uneasy with any Wal-Mart exclusive, I don’t think any of us were prepared for what was to come. If you hit up the Wave 5 sightings threads in the archives of various message boards, you see the usual mix of impatience and anticipation. As you follow along from November into December the mood darkens, the eBay prices rise, and fans start to worry they will never find the wave despite Matty’s assurances the wave was still shipping. By January, though, the writing was on the wall and the eBay prices were easily triple the cost of their retail price. Any hope that more were in the pike was dashed.

And in the year since, there’s hasn’t been. A few sightings cropped up in February, but by then Wave 5 had a thing of the past. Many Wal-Marts went the whole season without receiving a single case. What went wrong? We may never know for sure. We can be fairly certain that the wave was vastly under-produced compared to the previous and subsequent waves. Mapping out the sightings can show you that the figures appeared and reappeared consistently in a handful of Wal-Mart locations instead of being widespread. The other irony is that while this wave was considered to be a disaster by fans, Wal-Mart was happy enough with the results to order a second exclusive in 2009 and exclusive 2pks (& possibly a third exclusive wave) in 2010. Luckily, wave ten has seen far larger distribution and hopefully any future exclusives will be released similarly.

But wave five? Two sets sold on eBay this month. A BIN for $350 and another auction was bid up to $275. That’s 4-6 times retail. But are the figures worth it? Is the quality control there to support a price of $50 per figure? Is Metallo the best collect and connect figure you don’t have?

Atom

The Atom is the best individual figure from the wave. His costume is easily captured with a buck body – and a belt piece was added at the waist for accuracy (though his belt buckle is conspicuously absent). Aside from the missing buckle, his paint work is fairly solid. Mattel made the odd choice of molding his hands and lower thighs in blue and then having to paint them red to match, but they mostly do (though you can see that blue ring around the peg in the photo above). The figure relies heavily on the head sculpt and it does its job for the most part. The sculpt itself is great – that’s the Atom’s chin, I have no doubt. The paint work is a little sloppy around the eyes, but the clean tampo for his symbol helps to keep the look sharp. A mini-Atom accessory would have been nice, but likely costed out for an exclusive Wal-Mart wave. If you were fortunate enough to find Gentlemen Ghost, a mini-Atom was included with him.

Amazo

As you’ll see with every figure in this wave, each figure was made with as little new pieces as possible. Amazo is no exception. He’s built from a standard buck. His GL ring is courtesy of him reusing Hal Jordan’s entire hand (gloved features and all) while his head is the one new piece. Again, the 4H head sculpt is well done. Amazo’s trademark ‘vulcan’ ears are present and even his nose seems right for the character. The paint does the rest of the work and the green stripes are surprisingly crisp and straight. The skin tone paint on the chest is a different story, however. It’s a very thick paint that kept many of its brush strokes and doesn’t quite match the molded color of the face or arms. Truthfully, I’m not even sure why they elected to paint it, then to paint the green details over it. I’m not sure what color is molded under there. Amazo comes with no accessories and does not feature Wonder Woman’s lasso as a glued on item either. Continue to Page 2…

Black Lightning

Black Lightning is my least favorite from this wave. I have to admit some bias because I dislike his modern look. I would’ve preferred his early 90s look first, but his vintage costume or his late 90s costume are better than the current version. But the problem with the figure is that it doesn’t do a good job of replicating the costume. The use of a standard buck is fine, but the paint work is fuzzy on both the blue and yellow lines. The head sculpt, while accurate, loses something with the goggles painted gold in a line where Guardian and Wildcat have their eyes so well-displayed, or where Blue Beetle and Booster have see-thru goggles.

Finally, my real problem with Black Lightning is his articulation. I haven’t mentioned artic up until now because all of the figures I found, save one, were good. But I was lucky. Wave five was plagued with bad hip joints. They were frozen out of the package and the softer peg would usually tear before it gave. I’ve tried various tricks on my BL’s left leg, but none have worked. That hip is still fused and is possibly damaged from my failed attempts. Since the replacement cost is high, I don’t bother with it and he stands on my shelf as my most disliked figure in the entire line.

Eradicator

Eradicator was the figure I wanted to like best. His pre-release photos were great. His unique shield/cape looked like a great piece. The new “Superman” head looked good and I loved the clear visor. Yeah, the clear visor. As you can see, the solid gold visor just lacks the charm and makes him look a little dopey. Okay, a lot dopey. Otherwise, this is a great figure. The buck works. The paintwork is great. The shield/cape is a great piece. The head sculpt, even if a little “Dean Cain-ish”, is good. But those goggles just blow. Another thing that could have saved it would have been a clear yellow energy hand. This ‘Superman’ could emit beams of energy from his hands and both the MOS and DCD versions utilized the clear plastic for that effect. I love clear plastic by the way.

Riddler

Riddler is another good figure that’s set back by minor annoyances. While the suit buck isn’t the most popular among fans, I don’t mind it (I’m mildly amused by bifurcated ties and how Superman’s pecs retractably fit into Kent’s suit, okay?). The buck does it job on suited figures, and the green version looks good on Riddler. His head sculpt has a slight smirk that I like and I love the hat. As usual, the head is the best part of the figure. The paint work is clean for the most part. My figure ended up with some black scuff marks on his hat and neck, but the real issue is the question mark tampos.

In the prerelease photos, they were on his coat piece and his arms, but they were left off the arms on the final figure. Similar to the Eradicator’s golden goggles, this makes him look dopey. Who buys a suit with the pattern not extended to the sleeves? (Sorry, couldn’t resist). The Riddler does have the benefit of the one accessory in the entire wave, his trademark cane. Continue to Page 3…

Metallo

I’ll just be upfront, Metallo is truly the centerpiece of this wave. He’s not my favorite version (that would be the SA orange/green version), but this one looks great. He has a ton of detail – not just the wires and tubes, but dents and dings all over the figure. The articulation is great with all sorts of joints hidden in the gears – some of which are designed to look like they’re working as you move the figure around. Oh, and he’s huge. Upright, he towers, but he can also crouch and just be massive. To top it off, like any good Metallo, you can expose his kryptonite heart by removing that big “M” on his chest (it fits snugly, but removes easily). Underneath you find the chunk of kryptonite within and the entire cavity is painted in a manner that really manages to look like glowing on first glance. He’s a great piece. And I’m not sure, but he may have been a leftover DCSH sculpt.

In Conclusion…

Overall, this wave is really a run-of-the-mill wave when it comes to classics. There are some good figures and some bad figures. The C&C is a great piece, but maybe not the version every fan would have wanted. Is the wave worth $200-300? Of course not. I can’t imagine that any one wave of toys would be. And I’m not sure what drives the price so high for this particular wave. It could be that it’s stacked with figures that various fans would consider essential. Atom is necessary for any JLA shelf and Amazo is one of the classic DCUC villains. The Riddler is needed for any Bat-villain shelf and for the Legion of Doom display until we know for sure the leotard Riddler is coming. The Eradicator is part of the always popular Reign of the Superman story. Black Lightning was hot in the modern JLA during the time of his release. It could be any or all of those things driving the price. Or it could just be that addictive component – completism. I know that I wanted them all when I went to eBay a year ago this week. I felt I was lucky – I picked them for $100 shipped right before the price went crazy. At “only” double the price or so, I thought I got a deal. With them selling at three times that, I guess I did.

Recently, Mattel has said they might look into doing a “box set” of Wave 5 on Mattycollector.com. I hope that’s the case for the many DCUC collectors out there who are still missing these figures. They may not be worth $50 a piece, but they fill out important roll calls on a DCUC shelf and of all the figures, these are among the handful that definitely need to see reissue.

[6,369,10
2557,370,308,2583,2560
If you're one of the lucky few that is caught up on DC Classics (Ha!), your vacation is coming to an end.
