Review: Tamashii
Impact Effects

One of my favorite toy innovations over the last few years is the creation of effects parts. With some clever sculpting, translucent plastic and usually detailed paint apps, these static accessories can transform a normal pose into a dynamic action scene. While effects parts are usually character specific, I’ve always felt there was a market for general designs that could be added to nearly any figure. Apparently Bandai had a similar notion.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" first foray into this accessory line is the Impact Effect. Before we get into the actual piece, I wanted to take a second to look at the box. This might be the plainest packaging I’ve ever seen for something that’s meant to be sold in stores. They definitely knew this isn’t a toy that you’re going to keep in box, so why waste resources on the packaging.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27681" alt="impe2" Effect is a crater-shaped sculpt that comes in two colors: gray and beige. I know the sculpt reuse is a great way to recoup costs, but I’m actually really glad they gave us a couple of options here. Now our figures aren’t relegated to only battle in a concrete or dirt environment. If only I could get one in Grayskull Green though…

<img itself is simple yet effective. The center of each piece is textured shattered stone with the edges curled up like a shallow bowl. While the edges still do have that shattered look, the wider pieces and upward motion make the rocks look like their being blown out from the force of the hit.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full great exploding effects or just more shattered rubble, each Impact Effects can be separated into seven separate pieces. The center bit can pop in or out, while the three pieces of the ring lock in place with each other. Then there is a small piece of rubble that connects to each of the three ring pieces. Continue to different sizes of holes on the back of each outer ring piece. This is for you to attach some arms from the Tamashii stands. The stand arms can also replace the small pieces of rubble, giving you even more options for complex setups.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27675" alt="impe6" have a couple of issues here. First is the lack of any stand holes in the center piece. There were plenty of times during my photo shoot where I definitely could have used a support arm in that spot but had to end up balancing that piece or not using it at all.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27676" alt="impe7" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/impe7.jpg?resize=640%2C495" width="640" height="495" is that the Impact Effect doesn’t come with any Tamashii stand arms. Now some of Bandai’s figures do come with stands, but the majority doesn’t. So if you want to get more complex scenes out of this piece, you’re then forced to buy one of Tamashii’s stand sets. Of course the down side of including extra arms is that it’ll make the Impact set more expensive. So it kind of sucks either way.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27677" alt="impe8" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/impe8.jpg?resize=640%2C593" width="640" height="593" two complaints I still love this rocky effects part. I’ve been waiting for an accessory line like this for a few years now, and I’m glad to see someone has stepped up to create it at a reasonable price. Next in the lineup will be Flame effects, and there were Explosion effects at the last couple of conventions. I can’t wait to see where they go after that.

-Vault

<img decoding="async"
