Review: MOTU
Classics Unnamed One

With a few hints here and a couple of namedrops there, it seems like Mattel has been teasing us with the Unnamed One for quite a while. We all had our own theories as to who this character might be. (Personally, I thought it’d be the devil from the episode “The Wizard of Stone Mountain”.) But after all was said and done the Big Bad of MOTU turned out to be an evil Trollan.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wasn’t too thrilled about UNO’s identity, or the fact that his origin story shares a lot in common with the Guardians of the Universe in the Green Lantern books. But over the last couple months I’ve grown to really liking this figure, and that always makes it easier to ignore any characterization or back story that you may disagree with.

<img decoding="async" about this figure is the sculpt. Ignoring the fact that he’s the Unnamed One, just having an evil Trollan on the shelf is pretty neat. Unlike his good brethren, UNO is loaded down with tattered robes, armor and a utility belt carrying various pouches and even a knife. There’s even a disturbing bloody skull hanging from his chest. This dude is a wizard/warlord and the Four Horsemen did an amazing job detailing him. Like Vikor and Demo Man, the Unnamed One could easily fit into a pulp adventure like Conan the Barbarian.

<img decoding="async" sculpt a bit more, UNO comes with two different heads. The first is a more classic Trollan look with a long and pointy mage hat that covers most of his head. He’s also wearing a tattered veil to cover up his black face, but those evil yellow slits for eyes still glare out.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27630" alt="uno4" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/uno4.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" head is a bit more intimidating. With its spiked rivets, sharp Mohawk, and toothy mouth guard, this helmet definitely gives off a Death Dealer kinda vibe. It even has this cool little dragon skull emblem on the forehead. This is a fantastic piece, unfortunately the ears kind of throw it off. Without them I’d have already made an evil barbarian for He-Man to fight. Unfortunately picking up an exclusive figure for just his helmet isn’t going to happen any time soon. Continue to unfortunately limited when it comes to articulation. His head is on a ball joint, but the sculpt of his shoulder pads and heads limit its range. Both shoulders and elbows are swivel/hinge joints, cutting out the need for a bicep swivel. His forearms do have a swivel joint though, allowing for wrist movement. The last piece of articulation is a swivel joint where he attaches to his stand. This is probably my biggest disappointment with the figure. Orko’s ball jointed stand gives him a nice bit of range and expression that really should have been duplicated for UNO.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27635" alt="uno6" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/DSC04531.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" the heads, stand, and mini comic, UNO also comes with two accessories. First is a new wand. The design is similar to Orko’s, but it has a larger disc at the top. The center of the disc also has a trans green jewel and a snake wrapping its way down the handle. Definitely another cool artifact for the shelf.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27634" alt="uno7" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/DSC04521.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" other accessory is an effects part. To show off a bit of his evil magic, he gets a trans green cluster of power that focuses into snakes at the end. I’m always a big fan of effects parts, and this may be the best one in the line so far. Each little snake head has its own details, and the piece can be either an attack or him grabbing something from a distance.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27632" alt="uno8" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/uno8.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" always seem to do their best work when they have a pivotal role in designing a character, and UNO really reiterates this fact. Instead of a silly cartoon Trollan who’s just misunderstood, they’ve given us a warlord that fits in nicely with the barbarian aspects of the mythos.

-Vault

<a
