Tonight, I’m crossing one off the list: The White Ranger. The real sad part is that I try not to open figures that I haven’t reviewed (I don’t always succeed) and so my Figuarts White Ranger has been sitting in his box for about three months (oops!). Ashamedly, I did have a different review in mind for tonight, but I did not have the supplies I wanted for the review, so I looked around for a last minute alternative. It didn’t take me too long to realize Tommy was staring right back at me.

I’m not sure why I didn’t go for the review right away. I did point out in my Red Ranger review that he was a bit difficult to talk about because I was saying pretty much the exact same thing I had said in my Green Ranger review, but truthfully, I’m reviewing the same bucks over and over in most of my reviews anymore. I’m not sure why it’s so difficult when it comes to Figuarts, but it does seem to be.

While I’m telling secrets, I also almost didn’t buy the White Ranger. I have more fond memories of Tommy as the Green Ranger than the White. Even looking at him now, the figure is a little foreign to me, not evoking that same glee that the diamond-pattern Rangers do. But, I went on a little bit of a Figuarts Ranger binge. I snagged a cheap Red Ranger from Operation Overdrive (that I really didn’t need), the Red & Black Rangers from Jetman (I love those, can’t wait for the rest of team), and then I went down this odd path where I figured the Ryu Ranger looked cool enough to buy… and so he and the White Ranger became a package deal.

The Ryu Ranger, & Dairanger in general, sort of presents a funny story if you’re not familiar with the show. Power Rangers, as most know, is an imported show with American actors cut & pasted into fight scenes from the Japanese Super Sentai series. It’s fascinating to me how it comes about and how the Power Rangers side deals with the various changes on the Sentai side each season. When Power Rangers kicked off using footage from Zyuranger, everything went pretty smoothly, including the introduction of Tommy as the sixth, green, ranger.

The next year, when Super Sentai moved onto Dairanger, Power Rangers didn’t. It probably wasn’t that weird at the time; it’s just odder in retrospect after twenty years of the show reinventing itself. But, Power Rangers did incorporate Dairanger’s Kiba Ranger as the White Ranger. A new role for Jason David Frank’s character, Tommy Oliver. I don’t remember noticing the White Ranger never really appearing in the group shots (and it’s likely he could’ve in reshot scenes), but it’s interesting that they were able to cut one character out of one show entirely and place him in another. I need to go back and watch just how “seamless” it might’ve appeared.

Now, Tommy has gone on to be, like, a million other Rangers in the franchise since then ’ll always associate Tommy as the Green Ranger, I think his importance to the overall franchise parlays into his later color options (I don’t need the Red Zeo Ranger, Black Dino Ranger, and so on to have a little Tommy army though. Nope!). Continue to Page 2…

Okay, so the figure is pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Figuarts. You can check out my Green Ranger review if you’d like my fresh take (hope I said the same things!). The White Ranger uses a lot of the same parts, but gets some new boots and arms for costume details, though they could be reused, like the belt, from Figuarts I’m not as familiar with. What’s new to the White Ranger, though, is the head and armor. The armor isn’t intended to be removable, but is a separate piece. The shoulder pads wisely (& thankfully) are articulated so they flip up to retain the arm movement. The visual isn’t always pretty, but I’ll gladly take it over the alternative. The helmet sculpt itself is solid. I don’t like the Dairanger helmets as much as the classic Rangers, but it works!

Articulation is standard Figuarts, featuring ball-joints at both the top and bottom of the neck, wrists, and ankles, hinged toes, double-hinged knees & elbows, thigh swivels (similar to MOTU figures), two well-ranged torso joints at the mid-torso and waist, and then the shoulder & hips feature ball-joints that are on the end of a double hinged bar. He can get down if you need him to.

The paint work was particularly solid on the White Ranger. The pearlescent paint job over the white plastic is gives the figure a nice sheen and helps him stand out from his fellow rangers. The gold paint and black is similarly crisp throughout – though I did have a tiny bit of slop here and there, well within what I’d consider acceptable.

Accessory wise, the White Ranger is a little light, at least light by Figuarts standards. He includes two fists, a gripping hand, and an open hand instead of the usual “way too many complement”. The main accessory though, and all a White Ranger really needs, is Saba. An enchanted sword, Saba could talk and shoot blasts from his eyes (in addition to being the key to the Tigerzord). I always felt bad for Saba – he was like Tommy’s buddy and then he just ends up in a display case while Tommy surfs the rainbow. Sad day, right? Saba includes two blades one, extended and one retracted. These attach at the hilt, which is also how you get the sword into the holster. That makes for a bit of comedy as you pull the sword free… and the blade falls off.

Overall, the White Ranger may not be as crucial a purchase for an MMPR fan. I’m more anxious to get the upcoming Black & Blue Rangers (Pink is here waiting to be opened & reviewed, Yellow has yet to be scheduled) than I was to get Tommy in white, but I can’t deny he’s a cool figure. The original design and the pearlescent paint combine to really make the figure pop. I think he’ll look great competing for a spot among the main five with his Green past-self or maybe even with the Dairangers should I really go forward and complete that particular subset (the jury is still out on that one). For now, he’s just a cool get of a character I like: Saba. Kidding, Tommy too.

For more reviews, visit our Review Index.

[1986,34,10
445,2039,2227,1777,2225,347,1244,2037,2226
Like with Transformers Prime, I’m also a bit behind on reviewing the last few S.H.
