Apparently I missed the news entirely on Hasbro\u2019s Marvel Super Hero Mashers line.\u00a0 I knew nothing about these guys until I stumbled across them at my local TRU a couple weeks ago.\u00a0 Ever since the inception of Xevoz I\u2019ve felt that customizability could be a very big part in the future of action figures, so these Masher figures interested me right away.<\/p>\n

\"mmds01\"<\/p>\n

The line seems to come in three different price points.\u00a0 The cheapest is about ten dollars and includes the figure and maybe an accessory.\u00a0 Next up is about twelve to fifteen dollars, which includes a figure with more accessories and or armor.\u00a0 Last is the most expensive, twenty dollars gets you a figure with enough accessories\/armor to cover most of the body and action or electronic feature.\u00a0 I decided to test out the cheapest level since I didn\u2019t know how I\u2019d like them, and Doom is one of my favorite characters.<\/p>\n

All the figures in the line have been given a simplified, almost animated style.\u00a0 Sculpted details like muscles and armor plating exist, but they\u2019ve been downplayed as just general shapes.\u00a0 One thing I definitely like is that the line seems to have a few different \u201cbuck\u201d bodies so far.\u00a0 Doom is a bigger figure overall, standing a bit taller and with wider shoulders.\u00a0 Spidey seems to be one of the shorter figures in the line with the thin body style that\u2019s appropriate for the character.<\/p>\n

Spidey\u2019s sculpt is pretty smooth all around.\u00a0 He did get a new left hand for web shooting, but his most detailed areas seem to be the accessory ports, which have been sculpted to look a bit like armor attachments.\u00a0 One of the things that intrigued me about this figure is the lack of black spider lines on his costume.\u00a0 They\u2019d definitely clutter up the simple look Hasbro was going for, which I don\u2019t have a problem with.\u00a0 It\u2019s just odd seeing him without that very prominent piece of his costume.\u00a0 Kinda makes him look like he\u2019s half way to being the Scarlet Spider.<\/p>\n

Doom has a bit more love in his sculpting, although I have a feeling these parts are being reused from another armored character.\u00a0 The head\u2019s all his own though, and I think they did a pretty good job of capturing his look in an extreme way.\u00a0 He\u2019s got the classic hood and armored face, but the sculpt is asymmetrical.\u00a0 One eyebrow is raised in crazy looking anger, while his chin\/lower lip is crooked and jutting out a bit like he\u2019s about to go off on the next person who gets in his way.<\/p>\n

As with sculpt, the paint is pretty basic also.\u00a0 I mentioned that Spidey\u2019s lines are already missing, but they did keep his spider symbols on both front and back of his costume.\u00a0 Aside from the white and black eyes, the figure also received blue in the appropriate places.<\/p>\n

Doom is a little more advanced.\u00a0 The figure is mostly molded in the proper colors, but there are a few places like his belt, shoulders, and cape clasps that got some attention.\u00a0 His mask is also painted in silver with glowing red eyes, which only makes him look crazier.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Now to the part you\u2019ve all been waiting for, the mashing!\u00a0 The main feature of these figures is that they\u2019ve been designed to have removable heads and limbs.\u00a0 The figures are articulated at the head, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles with swivel\/hinge ratchet joints.\u00a0 Aside from the shoulders and ankles, the joints were made to be pulled apart and swapped with other figures.<\/p>\n

While the swapping process is super easy, I\u2019m a bit concerned about the two-pronged peg that\u2019s used.\u00a0 As the plastic ages and becomes more brittle, I can definitely see these pegs getting broken in half pretty easily.\u00a0 I\u2019m also disappointed in the lack of articulation at the waist and wrists.\u00a0 These points aren\u2019t necessary, but they\u2019d help the figures look less stiff while posing.<\/p>\n

Each figure comes with an accessory.\u00a0 Spidey gets a web line that can connect to any of his ports.\u00a0 For some reason it was molded in a translucent blue though, which makes it look kind of like he\u2019s shooting water.<\/p>\n

\"mmds09\"<\/p>\n

Doom\u2019s accessory is his cape.\u00a0 It plugs into the two ports on his back, but also has ports in the same place.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad they included this so the figure doesn\u2019t have to choose between style and weaponry.<\/p>\n

\"mmds10\"<\/p>\n

I do think these figures are good, but they\u2019re definitely made for kids and not collectors.\u00a0 That\u2019s not saying that collectors won\u2019t love these also.\u00a0 They\u2019re just not for me. \u00a0I was a disappointed with the limits on the customizability.\u00a0 I was really hoping Hasbro was reviving a Xevoz-like property, but these new Mashers lack that unique stylistic feel and super articulation that made that line special.<\/p>\n
