Action Figures of 2013!"},"content":{"rendered":"

And we\u2019re back! Our apologies for that little too long post-holidays hiatus there. I tell ya, reviewing a Castle<\/a> really takes it out of you! I keed, I keed<\/em>. 2014 has been marked by being under the weather so far (both outside and in, I can\u2019t shake this cold and I don\u2019t know who asked for all this snow). But we\u2019re ready to get back to work and we\u2019re going to kick things off with a look back at 2013. <\/p>\n

Both Vault and I have prepared a list of our 2013 Top Ten Figures (that we reviewed!). That\u2019s right, no pesky toys without links to fun reviews here (we\u2019ll shoot the \u2018best toys we didn\u2019t review\u2019 past you tomorrow), just twenty links to some of the toys we got the biggest kick out of this year!<\/p>\n

Before we dig into the list, I do have to give one shout out to an Honorable Mention. He wasn\u2019t one of the best figures of the year, but I loved him all the same. He found his way to the front of my MOTU Classics shelf and he probably got one of my best reviews all year: Batros<\/a>! I still can\u2019t explain why he was so much fun, but he\u2019s joined the ranks of Faker & Scareglow as my favorite MOTUC figures even if he\u2019s not really at home on a 2013 Top Ten List! <\/p>\n

I\u2019m writing this part before I\u2019ve seen Vault\u2019s finally choices, but we did agree to stick to \u201cfigures\u201d specifically instead of including vehicles and playsets. We might do a separate list for those later this week too! Now, on to the list!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Noisy No. 10 – Power Lords: Elite & Power Soldiers!<\/th>\nVault No. 10 – MOTU Clasics: Lord Dactys!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nI knew the Four Horsemen’s Power Lords<\/a> figures would be good, but what I didn\u2019t expect was just how fun they would be once they arrived! These early colorways already show that the line is going to feature some terrific craftsmanship and smart engineering – I really can’t state how much I love the ability to mix-&-match parts! I can\u2019t wait for the main character releases!<\/td>\nIt was a long wait for Lord Dactys<\/a>, but it was worth it. With some creative engineering and a few new pieces, Matty was able to produce a figure that towered over most of his predecessors and sported some cool backwards-bending chicken legs. Dactys is a perfect example of how the MOTU Classics line can stretch boundaries without breaking budgets!<\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 9 – Hive Wars Predator!<\/th>\nVault No. 9 – DC Classics: Mallah & the Brain!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nI don\u2019t know if Vault & I are doing a Top Toy Company list for 2013, but I\u2019m pretty I\u2019d give my top honors to NECA. They already upped their game by producing vastly improved versions of the the basic Predator & Alien characters, but they took things a step further with some fun, less famous versions like the Blue Hive Wars Predator<\/A>! I love the movie figures, but I can’t get over the awesome Kenner figs!\n<\/td>\nWith a light brown color and a few new pieces, Matty transformed Grodd\u2019s body into a fantastic Monsieur Mallah<\/a>, But he wouldn\u2019t be perfect without a newly sculpted Brain to lug around & smooch<\/em>. Enemies of the Doom Patrol, and just great Silver Age villains, these two were definitely high on my want list. Even though we\u2019re getting bound Doomsday, these two are my last big DC Classics hurrah.\n <\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 8 – Marvel Legends: Rocket Raccoon!<\/th>\nVault No. 8 – Transformers Prime: Ripclaw!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nMarvel Legends rocky return wasn\u2019t the best thing that happened in 2013 (there are still figures I haven\u2019t even seen) and I was skeptical of the Micro-BAF concept, but Hasbro had me with Rocket Raccoon<\/a>! I bought the full set online just to get the little guy. He looks great on my shelf and getting him as a figure has me that much more exciting for the upcoming film!<\/td>\nRipclaw<\/a> was probably one of the more interesting Transformers I got this year. With a menacing head sculpt and armored body, you\u2019d never expect she\u2019s one of the few female bots in the line. Her transformation is simple yet well designed, making her much more thought out than Predacons that just stand up. Aside from her head she\u2019s also got super articulation, making her an all around nice figure. <\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 7 – G.I. Joe FSS: Big Boa!<\/th>\nVault No. 7 – Nightstorm Predator!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nI still can\u2019t say if Fun Publications G.I. Joe subscription is something I should keep buying (I sold more than half of the figures, unopened), but some of the figures I kept have been among the best Joes in years. Big Boa<\/a> was the crown jewel of the first subscription earlier this year! With smart reuse, some great new parts, and the inclusion of unreleased accessories, Big Boa easily makes this list!<\/td>\nOut of all of NECA\u2019s Predators, Nightstorm<\/a> is my downright favorite. The fact that he was inspired by the old Kenner line really does a lot for me, but it\u2019s not the only thing. This guy is top notch in sculpt, paint, and articulation. He even has a removable mask so you\u2019re not stuck with one look. He\u2019s the perfect update to a favorite childhood line. <\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 6 – MOTU Classics: Ram Man!<\/th>\nVault No. 6 – MonsterArts: King Kong!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nIf Batros didn\u2019t make the list, what MOTUC would? Here\u2019s a hint: He came out the very first month of 2013 and I don\u2019t think a single subsequent figure topped him. Still not sure? Look left. Ram Man<\/a> was a terrific all-new sculpt that managed to keep most of the articulation in order despite the bulk. It was a long wait to get Rammy, but I can honestly say Mattel made sure he was worth the wait.<\/td>\nUnfortunately I\u2019ve had to cut back on MonsterArts this year because of budget, but I still love the line. One of my last purchases was King Kong<\/a>, and he\u2019s a perfect example of how this line can rock a figure. The combination of a great sculpt, three different faces, four sets of hands and super articulation allows for a huge array of monkey posing and pure fun picture taking. <\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Noisy No. 5 – Figuarts: Green & Red Ranger!<\/th>\nVault No. 5 – Figma: Miku 2.0!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nTIE Game! Heck, if I\u2019d reviewed White & Pink, it would be a 4-way tie. Vault is usually your import reviewer here at IAT, but I couldn\u2019t resist the siren call of Figuarts Power Rangers line once they treaded to familiar territory. Yeah, the Green Ranger<\/a> & the Red Ranger<\/a> are mostly just standard Figuarts, but Bandai has refined the line to near perfection. I\u2019d be happy to get just about any of my favorites done in this style.<\/td>\nI didn\u2019t really know what to expect with Good Smile\u2019s Miku 2.0<\/a> figure. The Figma line already sports some of the best articulation and likenesses, so I didn\u2019t know how they\u2019d improve it. The subtle differences in the 2.0 body allowed for posing that was less rigid, resembling movements of a real person. That alone sold me on the figure, but the detailed new sculpt and paint job helped too.<\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 4 – Transformers: Masterpiece Soundwave!<\/th>\nVault No. 4 – Nick TMNT: Mousers!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nMasterpiece had a huge 2013 with nearly a dozen great releases, but Soundwave<\/a> stands out in the crowded field. He was an amazing figure & faux tape deck, not to mention a slick transformation between the two. Importing him was pricey, but the SDCC\/TRU release with cassettes<\/a> included<\/a> was a steal if you could find it. Heck, I liked this guy so much, I\u2019ll by buying him again in black.<\/td>\nI\u2019ve been waiting twenty years for decent Mouser<\/A> figures, and Playmates finally hit a homerun with this set. Even though they have basic articulation, these little guys make for the perfect little robotic army to attack pretty much any figure on my shelf. With seven to a pack and three different colors, building a diverse army has never been easier.<\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 3 – Marvel Select: Venom!<\/th>\nVault No. 3 – Marvel Select: Wolverine!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nYou know a company is doing well when Vault\u2019s & my list are matching up. Marvel Select is another company who really took things to another level in 2013. I didn\u2019t snag Wolverine, but I couldn\u2019t resist their amazing Venom<\/a>. He\u2019s too big for my MLs, but the killer sculpt, great articulation, and tons of alternate gear to change his looks make up for it. Removable tongue FTW.<\/td>\nTiny Hugh Jackman, that\u2019s why I bought this figure. The sculpt and paint apps are some of the most impressive I\u2019ve ever seen on a 6-7 inch figure. It wasn\u2019t until I opened Wolverine<\/a> that I discovered how fun he was to pose with his super articulation and alternate heads and hands. This was definitely the most fun photo shoot I\u2019ve done all year.<\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 2 – Star Wars Black: Sandtrooper!<\/th>\nVault No. 2 – Star Wars Black: Boba Fett!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nWave 1 was in the mail, but I couldn\u2019t resist picking up an extra Sandtrooper at retail. He’s that good. If Hasbro wanted to make a splash right out of the gate, I think the Sandtrooper<\/a> best makes it. The line still has room for improvement on likenesses & giraffe necks, but this fig was perfection, right down to screen-accurate, non-Stormtrooper parts to get him right. Great figure!<\/td>\nI was lucky enough to snag an SDCC Boba Fett<\/a> for only a slightly insane price. The first Black figure I owned, I knew right away this line was going to be trouble for my wallet. His sculpt and paint were fantastic. While articulation could be better (stupid pouches), he could still pull off his classic poses and even expressive gestures. An amazing figure, with or without Han.\n <\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Noisy No. 1 – Predator: Dutch (Jungle Extraction)!<\/th>\nVault No. 1 – Figuarts: War Machine!<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/a><\/td>\nEarlier, I said NECA had really stepped up their and no figure said that better than \u201cDutch\u201d Schaefer<\/a> in 2013. With a terrific sculpt (check that likeness!), great articulation, paint, materials \u2013 you name it. They nailed Dutch. He’s like a 6″ Hot Toys! Nearly all 30 million versions NECA released were great, but for me it came down to “Jungle Extracton”. I liked the jacket, but it’s really all about the cigar!<\/td>\nFiguarts War Machine<\/A> had to be my number one. His sculpt, articulation, and paint make him a great figure, but it\u2019s the other details that make him amazing. The die-cast metal pieces give him a sturdy feel, while the alternate hands and effects parts give him high display value. He\u2019s the one figure I kept on my desk and couldn\u2019t stop posing\/playing with for weeks after opening him.<\/td>\n<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
