I\u2019m ending out this week with a changeup from our usual fare.\u00a0 I ran into a new line of dinosaur toys while I was wandering Toys R Us a couple weeks ago.\u00a0 They are based on the 3D movie of Walking with Dinosaurs, which I didn\u2019t even know existed until I found the toys.\u00a0 Most of the figures looked decent, but were a bit small for my taste.\u00a0 But behind all the Gorgons and Pachyrhinosauruses (which is the word of the day, btw) I found one lone Troodon just waiting for me.<\/p>\n

I say he was waiting for me because I couldn\u2019t have left the store without buying him.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always loved dinosaur toys, and this little guy is a pretty rare gem since the majority of his body is covered in feathers.\u00a0 Aside from figures of Archaeopteryx, it\u2019s not too common to find a full feathered dino toy.\u00a0 But it\u2019s definitely nice to see dinosaur toys are evolving with our better understanding of the different species.<\/p>\n

I have to say that Troodon\u2019s sculpt is pretty damned good for a cheap movie figure.\u00a0 While the feathers on his back look a bit angular and stiff, they did a great job on the plumes coming off of his tail, head, ankles and arms.\u00a0 The arms in particular have a small winged look with the claws spreading out into the wing itself, almost like a bat.<\/p>\n

I was pretty happy with the head sculpt also.\u00a0 The long beak and small eyes help him look a bit vicious, and the spikes of feathers sticking up on the back of his head give him some fun personality.\u00a0 In real life Troodon\u2019s are pretty small dinosaurs.\u00a0 They have sharp teeth that are serrated on both sides, but there extremely small.\u00a0 This is reflected in the figure by just barely having nubs on the lower jaw, and nothing on the upper.\u00a0 While it is more accurate this way, I wouldn\u2019t have minded a bit of exaggeration to make him a little more imposing.<\/p>\n

The paint job on Troodon is pretty good, but there are a couple of troubled areas.\u00a0 The figure is molded in a light tan color with most of the figure then being covered in dark brown and orange highlights.\u00a0 The head received the most attention with the feathered plume turning from gray to yellow to orange in a pretty smooth gradient.\u00a0 Unfortunately one of mine\u2019s eyes are sloppier than the other.\u00a0 There\u2019s also some chipping at the shoulder joint because it was painted dark brown instead of molded.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Troodon\u2019s articulation is basic for an animal.\u00a0 His hind legs are swivel joints.\u00a0 The shoulders are swivel hinges, which I\u2019m definitely glad they included.\u00a0 The head is on a ball joint, while the jaw is hinged.\u00a0 The jaw on my figure is too weak to stay closed, so I guess mine\u2019s always making noises or biting.\u00a0 The other issue is that real life Troodons balanced on their hind legs.\u00a0 With his tiny feet, heavy upper body, and lack of articulation, this little guy unfortunately can\u2019t do that.\u00a0 So without a stand to prop up his chest, he\u2019s going to either lean on his tail or wings for support.<\/p>\n

Troodon doesn\u2019t have any accessories, but he does have an action feature.\u00a0 When you press the button on his back he will emit one of four sounds.\u00a0 There is a couple chirping ones, a growl, and an extremely loud shriek which is actually a bit startling.\u00a0 All four sounds feel pretty realistic, and they get us more towards bird noises and farther away from the lion-esque sounds of the old days.\u00a0 (Hopefully I\u2019ll be able to get a video up to demonstrate these noises, but I\u2019m having a bit of trouble with it.\u00a0 So we\u2019ll see what happens.)<\/p>\n

This figure retails for about ten dollars, and I\u2019m pretty happy with the results when compared to the price.\u00a0 His articulation could have been a bit better, but it also could have been worse.\u00a0 I could easily see them cutting the swivel\/hinge shoulders for just swivels, but they didn\u2019t and that articulation really helps with the figures personality.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how this character is in the movie, but if you\u2019re a dinosaur fan then I really do suggest this guy.\u00a0 With his raptor-like posture and feathered body he makes a nice addition to any prehistoric shelf.<\/p>\n
