Wave two is a mixed bag of good and bad.\u00a0 NECA is definitely making progress to getting these figures where most collectors will be happy, but they\u2019re not quite there yet.\u00a0 Unfortunately the shortcomings are still most evident on kaiju side, which is why I wanted to take a look at Leatherback first.<\/p>\n

\"lthb1\"<\/p>\n

First, the good.\u00a0 Leatherback has three excellent things going in his favor.\u00a0 First is his size.\u00a0 I always knew Knifehead was a little on the small side, but the figure can look deceptively large with his wide stance and large upturned blade head.\u00a0 That illusion was shattered when I brought Leatherback home.\u00a0 The figure was big in the package.\u00a0 On the shelf he\u2019s just this massive hulking form that puts Knifehead to shame.<\/p>\n

\"lthb2\"<\/p>\n

With his massive body comes a pretty amazing sculpt.\u00a0 Like Knifehead, he\u2019s got different textures depending on where you\u2019re looking.\u00a0 His underbelly and legs are chubby and wrinkled, like a naked gorilla.\u00a0 This is in stark contrast to his back, which is heavily armored with plenty of bone-like spikes protruding around his EMP emitter.<\/p>\n

\"lthb3\"<\/p>\n

His forearms are a mixture of massive muscles and protruding armor.\u00a0 The most impressive part is his hands, which are basically giant spiked clubs with talons.\u00a0 It\u2019s always cool to see all the small details up close, especially when they weren\u2019t as noticeable in the movie.\u00a0 Leatherback\u2019s hands are massive bludgeoning weapons that really make me take notice as to why his attacks were so devastating in the movie.<\/p>\n

\"lthb4\"<\/p>\n

To top of the figure, he has an excellent head sculpt.\u00a0 The bony protrusions and teeth just make him look intimidating.\u00a0 Then you have the added strangeness of those tendrils that come out the back of his skull.\u00a0 Let\u2019s not forget his tongue.\u00a0 It may not be all out there like Knifehead\u2019s, but it\u2019s definitely noticeable with its own texture.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

\"lthb5\"<\/p>\n

The last thing this figure has going for it is the paint job.\u00a0 There are a few tiny details missing, like his other four eyes and unpainted teeth, but overall it\u2019s pretty amazing.\u00a0 His entire body has been lightly brushed with a slightly metallic blue which gives the figure a really neat sheen.<\/p>\n

\"lthb6\"<\/p>\n

A more intense version of this blue paint was used on his tattoo-like patterns, mouth, eyes, and tendrils.\u00a0 These details become almost luminous with how they reflect and add a really cool organic glow to the whole figure, and it turned out much more effective than the attempt on Knifehead.<\/p>\n

\"lthb7\"<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the one solid negative about Leatherback\u2019s figure is its articulation.\u00a0 The figure has hinge joints at the elbows, fingers, thumbs, and two on the back legs.\u00a0 These all do their job fairly well.\u00a0 It\u2019s the ball joints at his shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles that are the main problem because they\u2019re all hindered by his body sculpt.\u00a0 This could have been worked out better if the joints were given more room to move around inside the sculpt, similar to a MonsterArts figure.\u00a0 But they way they\u2019re hindered leaves most of them acting as swivel joints.\u00a0 Sadly, the one area that should have a ball joint is his head, but it ended up with a swivel.\u00a0 This leaves the figure constantly looking up and pretty much useless on his hind legs.<\/p>\n

\"lthb8\"<\/p>\n

Leatherback\u2019s a big figure that looks great and can strike a couple of nice poses.\u00a0 On a whole that leaves me much more satisfied with him than I was with Knifehead.\u00a0 He looks good hanging out on my shelf with the Jaegers, and I think he\u2019ll also fit in nicely with his future kaiju brethren.\u00a0 Is he perfect?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 But he\u2019s much closer to what I want out of this line and leaves me with a lot of hope for wave three.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let me down, NECA!<\/p>\n
