Review: Figma #200
Hatsune Miku 2.0

It seems like just a few weeks ago I was reviewing the Good Smile Company’s one hundredth Figma, Append Miku, and now number two hundred has just shown up at my door. GSM again chose Miku to celebrate this occasion. Even though she looks a bit average, she’s actually the first figure to receive the new updated articulation.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full into that, let’s take a look at her overall look. Miku comes in her standard clothing, a kind of futuristic schoolgirl look with metallic silvers and patent leather black. Her shirt, tie, and skirt are all made out of a soft rubbery plastic. This greatly helps the new articulation and allows her to move in ways the old figure couldn’t come close to.

Her hair also has another large change. While it remains the same basic style, it’s been given a more natural sculpt which looks more “fallen in place” than the jagged feel of the original’s. This is most evident on her ponytails which look windblown and fluid, a definite improvement over the first’s spoon-like shapes.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25846" alt="miku2" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku2.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku2.jpg?w=640 640w, https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku2.jpg?resize=150%2C112 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku2.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, are also improved. Her hair has been molded in a translucent plastic and painted teal, allowing the ends of her ponytails to be slightly transparent. The tampos on her sleeves are more crisply printed. Even the detail in her face and eyes is much more subtle. You can see different shades separating the layers of her eyes, and there are even slight blush marks on a couple of her faces.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25848" alt="miku4" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku4.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" biggest change, her articulation. I’ve always thought Figmas were pretty mobile, but they’ve definitely improved on the original model. The head is now attached to the body with two joints, a swivel/hinge connected to a ball joint. This retains all the old head movement, while adding an articulated neck. The shoulders are still a swivel/hinge and ball joint, but now the socket in the body is cut a bit wider. Now she can cross her arms in front or behind her body in a more natural way.

The torso joints have been improved the most. Instead of one or two separate joints at the chest or waist, the new body has a swivel/hinge attached to two ball joints at either end. This effectively makes a very basic, but flexible spine segment. Miku can now actually bend forward and backward like a human. The only negative is that this can separate’s her clothing a bit far and can look odd from certain angles. Continue to page 2…

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" lower waist and legs are attached with a “Y” shaped axis with ball joints at each end. The knees and ankles are swivel hinges, like normal, but this time she also has a swivel joint where her stockings meet her legs. Combined with the improved torso articulation, the figure has a much more natural stance where her weight can look shifted or the body itself can be twisted. The downside is that all this added articulation makes the figure a bit larger. She’s still the same scale, but overall she looks a size bigger than her counterparts.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25851" alt="miku7" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku7.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" improved articulation that also falls under accessories is her hands. They’ve replaced the hinge joint that attached to a pin with a smaller swivel hinge. This allows for much more subtle wrist movement than before. I do wish she came with a couple extras though. These joints are small and popped out of my fingers a few times while changing out the hands.

And you’ll definitely be changing them out with such a large assortment. You get a pair of fists, holding, pointing, palms open, a left one for holding the guitar neck and a right with a guitar pick, and then with palms flat and fingers open.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25847" alt="miku3" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku3.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" with three different faces: Smiling, looking to the side and blushing, and singing/winking. The old Figma faces will still work on the new body. They’re a little loose, but the bangs hold it on pretty well. Unfortunately the new faces are too large for the old body to hold.

She has a nice amount of accessories also. There’s a guitar with a strap, a microphone and a mic stand, and lastly a set of six wings that can be plugged into her back and on to the clear Figma stand.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25852" alt="miku8" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/miku8.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" the fence when the preorder for Miku 2.0 went up, but I went along with the order because I wanted to see how they improved the Figma model. I was not disappointed. Not only am I excited to see the improved articulation on future figures, but I was amazed with how superior this Miku is over the original standard version. She’s definitely worth adding to your collection if
