Review: NECA Nightmare on Elm Street NES Freddy

With the popularity of NECA’s NES inspired Jason Voorhees figure, it was only a matter of time that he would be joined by his partner in horror, Freddy Krueger. After all, there were games inspired by nearly every movie property back in the day of the Nintendo Entertainment System. And lucky for us, NECA owns the rights to both franchises also.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25557" alt="frdn1" we’ve got to start with the box. I’m not a big fan of keeping packaging, but at least half the appeal of these themed figures is the retro styled NES boxes they come in. Like Jason’s, Freddy’s has the same layout of the vintage NES packaging. A few of the logos have been changed or dropped, but that’s the biggest difference.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25558" alt="frdn2" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/frdn2.jpg?resize=640%2C584" width="640" height="584" package is also a copy of the old NES box, even down to the three pictures they’d include to show shots from the game. This time, those pics have been replaced with different features of Freddy’s figure. The idea for the retro game look is great, but what really pushes it over the edge to fantastic are all the worn edges. This gives it the same feel as its twenty four year old game counterpart.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25559" alt="frdn3" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/frdn3.jpg?resize=640%2C515" width="640" height="515" who prefer to keep Freddy boxed up, NECA included a cover that opens up to reveal a window display. The back side of the cover was given the ending screenshot of the game. The other side is designed to look like an old 8 bit gameplay shot, with Freddy standing in front of one of the houses. You even get the players’ health bars at the top.

<img decoding="async" Freddy is a repaint of a previous figure (or figures). This is actually my first toy of the character, so I’m not completely familiar with past plastic incarnations. But from looking around on NECA’s website, the NES version of Freddy seems to be cobbled together from at least two (maybe three) previous toys. This surprisingly goes a long way in giving this toy unique feel. Continue to page 2…

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full sets this Freddy apart is his awesomely terrible color scheme. You readers know I love garish figures, and this one definitely fits the bill. In order to get the full video game feel, Freddy’s been decked out in his extremely limited 8 bit colors. But even in this limited neon red and brown existence, the paint job itself is still nicely done. This is most evident on the apps that bring out the detail of the sculpt on his head and teeth. There are even blood stains on his glove blades that I didn’t even notice until I started taking pictures.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25553" alt="frdn6" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/frdn6.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" has one downside, it’s in articulation. Everything above the waist is pretty good. His head, waist, and wrists are all ball joints, while his elbows and shoulders are swivel/hinges. But below the belt his pants are one solid piece. His ankles have ball joints, but their limited by the sculpt on cuffs of his trousers. Freddy never really had to move around much to mess with people’s minds, and I do like that he can at least make a lot of grand gestures. It’s just unfortunate he’s not able to get a bit more dynamic when posing in fights with his NES Jason counterpart.

As for accessories, Freddie only comes with his hat. But what more do you need?

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25554" alt="frdn7" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/frdn7.jpg?resize=640%2C480" width="640" height="480" major props to NECA. They’ve discovered an inventive new way to expand on the properties they already hold, while at the same time appealing to my vintage childhood loves. NES inspired figures is the non-existent toy line I never knew I wanted. And with the upcoming release of and 8 bit Robocop, it seems to be a line that I’m not going to be stopping anytime soon.

-Vault

<img decoding="async"
