<\/a> Sometimes I\u2019m asked why I don\u2019t do many negative reviews. The primary reason for that is because reviews take a lot of time and, while some folks are fueled by hate & righteousness, I\u2019m just out to have some fun with toys. And if I\u2019m not having fun with a toy, I\u2019m probably not going to want to spend much time with it. IAT is a sweet gig all things considered. The pay could be better, but I basically play with toys every day. If I run across one that\u2019s not fun, it tends to make a quick exit from my collection, usually before I photograph it. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also gotten pretty good about not buying bad toys. I will occasionally snag a rotten apple, particularly when I buy online, but it\u2019s more likely that I\u2019ll end up with a not so great one simply because I want to collect what it represents. That last part there, I think, basically sums up Mattel\u2019s Watchmen line. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t care about the irony of the existence of Watchmen figures. I don\u2019t need to be that meta. I want Watchmen toys, comic-based toys. DC Direct teased me all those years ago with beautiful Tim Bruckner sculpts. They wouldn\u2019t be articulated well, but I would\u2019ve lived. The movie figures had some promise, I still kinda want a couple, but I never bought one. And then Mattel announces their line. <\/p>\n

The Rorschach is a thing of beauty. He\u2019s still my favorite. He\u2019s a little too big and the aesthetics block some artic, but I don\u2019t care. The figure walked off the page for me (even if the design on his mask didn\u2019t). It went downhill with the messed-up head Manhattan. Silk Spectre was middle of the road. I felt like I nit-picked Nite-Owl to death even though I didn\u2019t think he was a bad figure (his costume, like Rorschach\u2019s hurt the articulation). And then we get to Comedian. <\/p>\n

If I were to sneak a peek at the end of the review, I\u2019d guess that Comedian would fall somewhere in the same area as Nite-Owl. The basic figure is fine. The buck does most of the work and we got plenty of new pieces were we needed them, including most of the lower legs, the short gloves, his gear, a new bicep, and the new head sculpt. All these pieces are fine.<\/p>\n

The head sculpt looks good albeit a little small. The details on the belts and straps are sharp. The way the left sleeve was done is a bit odd-looking, but it mostly blends out with the stripes. The paint is sharp on the figure, even used to give the appearance of different textures. The articulation is fine too, pretty well standard for the DC buck, with only some minor blockage from the right shoulder pad. In addition to the included stand, Blake also got two accessories a removable flamethrower and a shotgun. Both are well sculpted, if a bit rubbery in execution. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

So if all that\u2019s fine, what\u2019s wrong? It\u2019s the little things. The head is undersized for the buck. And it\u2019s the only one. It\u2019s cool that we get two heads with the upcoming Ozymandias, but I think Blake might\u2019ve been better served here. Scarred and unscarred? Masked and unmasked? Young and old? It would take six heads to cover the bases. And the one they did choose? Well, it\u2019s kinda of odd to put him with the others. He\u2019s younger here, like Manhattan. He doesn\u2019t really go with the Nite-Owl & Rorschach who appear as they are in the present of the story. I know why Manhattan had to be based on his more modest flashbacks, but why not at least give Blake the temples for a \u201cmodern\u201d feel? <\/p>\n

I\u2019ll accept the realities that an extra head couldn\u2019t be afforded, even at $25, if they say so, but there are lazy bits here and there too. The left shoulder peg is molded in flesh tone and looks out-of-place. The flamethrower has no place to store the nozzle and if you want him to hold it, he had to hold it backwards. The trigger on the forward grip can’t be placed in his hand with his trigger finger. That’s a super-nitpick admittedly, but also, “Duh”. <\/p>\n

And while the two accessories are cool, there are three molded-on accessories. And, let me take a minute to be overly dramatic, molded-on accessories, like the intentional walk & honey mustard, should be banished from the Earth. They\u2019re just annoying. I feel like I should have a knife and two pistols for Comedian and instead I just look like I have them. Lame. <\/p>\n

Okay, let\u2019s dial it back as we wrap up. I said this would end with me saying Comedian is, at worst, just so-so. It\u2019s not that much of a crime in action figure collecting. But, the thing is, I love Watchmen. I bet that a lot of folks who subscribed to this line, that part with $25 every other month, love Watchmen too. But, the figures? They don\u2019t feel loved. They just feel like they made. There are tons of DCUCs where you can feel the love that went into them oozing off. The Watchmen figures would be jealous. <\/p>\n
