<\/a> But wait… there\u2019s more! We\u2019ve got one last review for MOTU Week! It\u2019s not terribly exciting, mostly an addendum, and it\u2019s going to be quick because it\u2019s on a MOTU Classics item that I don\u2019t particularly like: the Snake Mountain Stands. <\/p>\n

These should\u2019ve been reviewed, what a year ago? Maybe more. Vault was all set to do them and then… they just feel by the wayside. He told me once that he didn\u2019t want to review them, no sense torturing yourself over something no one cared about. Well, I don\u2019t know that writing a toy review is torture, but I do agree that these stands aren\u2019t really worth that much of my time. <\/p>\n

I have to admit up front that I\u2019m biased against stands \u2013 I don\u2019t generally want them. I have too many figures and too little space to give everybody a four square inch bit of real estate on my shelves. There are exceptions, if a weak figure needs them, if they\u2019re cool, if they could add to the display in their own way. <\/p>\n

The first stands, the Battle Stands that were made to echo Castle Grayskull filled at least the last two. The stands, frankly, don\u2019t really work for weak-ankled figures. There\u2019s not many footpeg stands that do. Octavia, Prince Adam, Trap Jaw, etc. \u2013 those guys & gals need delicate balance, help from a buddy, or a dreadfully unattractive doll stand that snugly caresses their crotch. Eww. <\/p>\n

But the Battle Stands looked cool beyond that and Vault gave them a few stars for doing so<\/a>. They looked sharp, they didn\u2019t connect but could be placed adjacent to one another easily enough, the rocky outcropping was neat enough. <\/p>\n

I still had some reservations \u2013 I don\u2019t really care for the removable peg feature first used on the Battle Stands and carried over to the Snake Mountain ones. I mean, I like the options I guess, but the multitude of holes really takes away from the main appeal, the aesthetics. I\u2019d be happier with two or three pegs and to be done with it. But I was happy with the Battle Stands overall, and for a moment the options really opened up. Fright Zone stands? Snake Mountain. Whispering Woods. Eternos. If we couldn\u2019t have playsets, we could at least carpet the shelving (and maybe forgo all the pegs and let the figure roam free). So when Snake Mountain Stands came out! Woo!! <\/p>\n

At least until they got here. To be fair, I had some reservations when they were revealed at PowerCon. The 4H protos weren\u2019t quite purple enough, and the lava didn\u2019t make a ton of sense, but the little streams flowing in the crags looked cool. The allure was there. But the actual product may vary. <\/p>\n

On the final versions, Mattel just didn\u2019t translate what little awesomeness the 4H had given these stands. They ended up looking almost straight black. The lava paint app was reduced to a corner puddle (if you lay the stands near each other you can kinda get a lava red cross). And the rocky outcropping attachment became a mostly unattached weird piece. <\/p>\n

So, really, the aesthetics that had been the saving grace for me on the Battle Stands became a giant weight around the neck of the Snake Mountain stands. They just don\u2019t look cool. Heck, they almost make you wish Mattel had saved some coin and released the Battle Stands in purple instead. Ouch. <\/p>\n

Alright, let\u2019s cut it there before I say something mean. To me, this is just one of those instances where we asked Mattel for something in particular and they didn’t quite get the message. Looking at next month’s stand offering, this won’t be the last time either. <\/p>\n

If you bought these and loved them, my hat\u2019s off to you. I wish I didn\u2019t. <\/p>\n
