<\/a> If you\u2019re a MOTUC Subscriber then you got a giant box last week and a giant hit to your wallet to match. Mattel released three MOTUC figures, plus the Horde Trooper two-pack, and then still wanted us to go hop on Mattycollector and order a Weapons Pak. Whew. With all that coming, in it was only naturally to kick off a MOTUC Theme week this week! <\/p>\n

I have to laugh at myself, and by extension, some of my fellow collectors. I didn\u2019t have a ton of interest in signing up for Club Filmation earlier this year. While I love MOTU as a property, I\u2019m not on always up on the minutiae of the ol\u2019 cartoon. I\u2019ve quietly scoffed at most of the characters included\u2026 and then they get here. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve said it a ton of times, but I think it\u2019s absolutely ludicrous to make up your mind about certain toys from SDCC\/NYTF\/NYCC pics. Sometimes, it\u2019s not. I don\u2019t need those new Mini-Masters unless they do a couple of my favorite characters. I don\u2019t need to get into DST\u2019s Universal Monsters. But I\u2019m already collecting MOTUC and when new MOTUC are revealed, I should know better to give the figs the benefit of the doubt. <\/p>\n

But I don\u2019t always remember that. I signed up for Club Filmation begrudgingly. To get them all? To find a diamond in the rough? To get Sea Hawk? To just blind spend money and annoy my wife? I don\u2019t know for sure, but I did it. And I\u2019ve been well rewarded; I have absolutely loved most of the figures. I didn\u2019t get to review Icer, but he sorta co-starred in Batros\u2019 review. That should say something. Shokoti, I still don\u2019t care too much about, but I do like her. And then we get to Nepthu. <\/p>\n

Nepthu, did need a little help as you\u2019ll see in the pics, but Nepthu has come out a winner. I didn\u2019t see it coming, but the Egyptian motif got me interested and spurred me to go back and check his episode. It was pretty interesting, Nepthu was really just a flash-in-the-pan Skeletor substitute. It was interesting at the potential dichotomy he would\u2019ve had with He-Man, using the Scarab of the Sun to change from an old man into a powerful sorcerer. Anyway, I my favorite part was probably when he kept loudly pointing out he was the most powerful being in the universe and He-Man responded casually, \u201cyou don\u2019t have to shout\u201d. And I did feel sad for him in the end as I think the Sorceress might\u2019ve lobotomized him. Ouch…<\/p>\n

Anyway, so all that is pretense; this is a figure review after all. One reason that I am glad that Nepthu was picked was because MOTUC was obviously short some ancient Egyptian flare. I want to see a very unlikely MO2K Sorceress (or at least Veena) and I really, really, really have wanted to see the theoretical \u201cHorde Mummy\u201d in the line. The Horde Mummy is apparently never coming though \u2013 Mattel doesn\u2019t know where the rights for him really lie, so they\u2019ve moved on. While that\u2019s a bummer, getting an Egypt-based guy in the line is still cool.<\/p>\n

The base buck is there as you\u2019d expect and Nepthu sees plenty of reuse in top of it. Marzo\u2019s left hand. Bow\u2019s boots. Tri-Klops wrists. The figure really only gets to claim five parts to itself, the loincloth, the biceps, the collar, and the head. The heavy re-use makes me wish we\u2019d gotten a little more out of the accessories, but hold that thought for now. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

The new pieces all work great. The bicep bands, loincloth, & collar have some detail added beyond the flat Filmation surfaces of the original. They all came out nicely. The head sculpt is also good too, but I have some reservations. I think I like it overall; it\u2019s got Nepthu\u2019s strong cheekbones, but he somehow has the \u201clooks like He-Man\u201d look to him. And I don\u2019t find him particularly villainous. He looks downright helpful \u2013 like he wants to help me change my tire. <\/p>\n

Part of that may be the paint. The paint overall was top notch on my figure. There is a slight concern on the biceps as part reuse dictates they were molded blue and painted flesh (that\u2019s never good long term), but they look good right now. The metallic colors also look sharp, but Nepthu needs a dose of manscara. He had it in the cartoon and it\u2019s downright stereotypical for him to have it in his \u201cpharaoh\u201d getup. So I did something I don\u2019t normally do, I customized the figure. I hate doing it on figures I only have one of, but it was either that or put Nepthu on the hero shelf. You\u2019ll see the results a few pics down. <\/p>\n

Nepthu did include two accessories. I\u2019m kinda bummed that there was no stand for the crystallized Zoar. We did see one in the 4H prototype pic, but that could\u2019ve just been to hold the figure up \u2013 still, a remold of the existing one would\u2019ve at least been something. The bright side though is that we did get the crystallized Zoar in the first place, even if it\u2019s the wrong color. In the episode, Zoar is turned to diamond, the toy would best be described as yellow tourmaline. I\u2019m kinda curious about the decision on that one as the 4H did the bird correctly in clear on the proto. <\/p>\n

The other key accessory is the Scarab of the Sun, this is crucial for Nepthu as it is both the artifact that transformed him and his primary weapon, using it to make tornadoes, giant scorpions, and a sand creature army. It\u2019s redone here well and fits perfectly into the reused Marzo left hand. <\/p>\n

Overall, Nepthu is another fun figure. I\u2019m not as smitten as I was with Batros or find him as novel as Icer, but I\u2019ve enjoyed having him all the same. The accessories are fun and the new pieces work to make a sharp figure. That said, I still felt the need to put him under the knife\u2026 er, brush. He needs the heavy eye makeup. That was a goof on Mattel\u2019s part and one I felt the need to rectify. And once I\u2019d done that? Well, I went ahead and copied what I\u2019d seen from those great customizers and had an extra Scarabus faceplate donate a beard to Nepthu. It\u2019s still all 4H parts. That\u2019s not too blasphemous, right? <\/p>\n
