It’s partly due to the figure – it’s rather lackluster. It’s also due to Club Infinite Earths falling through. It wasn’t a surprise, but it was still a blow all the same. But, y’know, I can’t help but feel a general bit of malaise about the figures anyway. I’m not the only one – Vault’s pretty much selling his DC figures as quickly as they come in too.

It’s odd because I still want the line to go on in some fashion. I have a list of characters I want that’s a mile long – the font may be have to be large, but it’s still a long list. That really weighs on my mind for Fire because the figure is incomplete without Ice. And it’s not like Ice is just far-off figure that will never happen, we saw her. She was in the now-cancelled subscription. Hopefully, Mattel will find a way to get her released, albeit it as a more-limited, higher-priced figure. JLU limped along & hopefully DCUC has something left in the tank too. Otherwise, my DC toy buyin’ days are done. That’s a sad thought.

Anyway, I mention all that because I’m not sure how much of that big ol’ bowl of “meh” is coloring my feelings on this figure, who I similarly see as at least a bit “meh”. Now, let’s not go crazy here – Fire is not a bad figure. She’s not even close to being the worst and not everyone figure has to knock it out of the park every month. It’d be nice, but that’s not realistic. I guess what I’m trying to say is this. This is Fire. She’s fine. Here’s why.

If you’re not familiar with Fire, she’s technically a Super Friends character (oh noes!). Where she first appeared in the companion comic as Green Fury and was later adapted into the DC Universe in the early 80s first in the Global Guardians and then, more famously, in the Justice League. Her origins were tinkered with now again throughout the 80s, but Beatriz da Costa was more or less a model turned spy turned superhero when she was exposed to a green plasma that initially let her breathe green flame and later turn into a being composed of green flame.

That last part is particularly important because that’s the look I would’ve preferred for this figure. It would’ve been cheaper for Mattel too – standard female buck cast in clear green, add-on parts and paints to get the flames right and Fire would sparkle on my shelf. My whole opening would probably be different. Mattel didn’t go that route though, choosing for the powered down look. And while this is probably my least favorite iteration of her costume, I even like her old Green Fury look better, this was the right costume to go with once they decided on the depowered version. Continue to Page 2…

And that’s where the fact of the matter that she’s a decent figure comes in. Not only did they decide to go with this version, they did a good chunk of new tooling to get it right. New boots & feet, the new belt, a new torso with her trademark top, a new forearm, and then the new head sculpt. Pretty much all these parts are well done too. The face looks a little off – is it the lower lip, maybe? – but it’s not a bad sculpt. I love the hair! The details on the boots, belt, & bustier are all good (though the figure appears to be a bit more… modest than the comic version. Ha! Adult Collector in name only, right?). Beatriz does feel a little small (the women in the line appear to have decreased over time), but she’s listed at 5’ 8” and so the figure is actually just a tad a larger than she should be.

On the paints, a lot of the figure is molded in the appropriate color. The good thing is that the paints are mostly sharp wherever they’re found, even the lacing on the bustier’s back under the hair. The facial details are sharply done, but the right eye is ever so-slightly off. It’s not that bad in person, but you’ll notice a couple pics where I caught it just right for it look off. There’s also a slight discoloration on the cheek. I haven’t had any luck getting it cleaned up & I’m not sure what the source is.

Aritculation is really the only place where the figure loses a few stars. Part of that is because the DC female bucks never really gelled into a great base for the figures. For Fire, the buck causes a problem primarily at the hips, where the front of the lower torso blocks the hip ball a bit and kinda creates a v-crotch. The other area where the articulation is a little off the ankles. The boots weren’t sculpted so that the ankle had forward movement and that really limits the deeper poses the figure could find itself in. Other than those two areas the standard articulation is present and works as it should.

Fire does include one accessory! A boon for a Club Infinite Earths figure. It’s a clip-on flame that fits over either fist. It’s a neat little touch, but possibly too little, too late now that this line has an expiration date.

Overall, Fire is a fine figure. The sculpt is sharp, she got the new pieces that she needed, and the paints & articulation were executed fairly well with just one or two areas of concern. It just doesn’t feel like a success though. Maybe it’s that I’m still bummed about the state of the line, maybe it’s just that I really wanted the powered up version. I don’t quite know – it could just be that she needs Ice to go with her and having half of something just isn’t all that fun? In any case, I only feel like I (& those who may feel similarly) need to knock it off. Not every figure will be a Green Arrow or Kobra. And that’s okay. If we really want the line to continue – we need to champion the solid figures like Fire.

More DC Universe Classics Reviews:

For all our DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

[6,34,10
1166,15,2104,2106,2105,164,20,1546
With DCUC currently MIA and DC Direct focusing on video games and all things Nu, the Club Infinite Earths subscription has been my only link to the comics and characters I love. And now with Rocket Red out of the way, it’s pure character gold for the rest of the…
DC Comics has got a slew of characters that wear boring ol’ suits.
