As my cobbled together collection of Revoltech and MonsterArts kaiju grows larger, I\u2019ve been keeping my eyes out for anything else I could add to the shelf that might make for a good display.\u00a0 A few months ago I stumbled upon this nice little replica of the Final War\u2019s Gotengo, and I thought I\u2019d share a brief review and a bunch of pics.<\/p>\n

This updated version of the war ship Gotengo is from 2004\u2019s Godzilla: Final Wars.\u00a0 While not the best Godzilla movie out there, I do really love how many Toho monsters and references they crammed into it.\u00a0 It was Godzilla\u2019s 50th<\/sup> anniversary, and they had one hell of a party (even if Jet Jaguar wasn\u2019t invited).\u00a0 The Gotengo took its fare share of the spotlight, fending off an invading alien mother ship\u2019s forces and even aiding Godzilla in his fight with Monster X.<\/p>\n

The first thing that strikes you about this ship is that it\u2019s heavier than you expect.\u00a0 The upper command section and the top layer of the main body that\u2019s above the red line are both die-cast metal.\u00a0 This definitely gives the Gotengo a nice amount of heft, and fits in very nicely theme-wise with the metal parts of the Mechagodzilla and MOGERA MonsterArts.<\/p>\n

Even though the rest of the ship is plastic, there is still a nice amount of sculpted detail.\u00a0 Panel lines cover the entire body with various hatches and tech bits to break up the monotony.\u00a0 The mostly streamlined exterior is broken up by the segmented spirals of its drill tipped nose.<\/p>\n

Paint wise, the ship is very basic.\u00a0 The entire figure is molded in a dark gunmetal color which gives off a metallic sheen, even on the plastic bits.\u00a0 The giant drill tip has been painted a striking silver, and there\u2019s a dark red stripe running along both sides.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the Gotengo is actually articulated.\u00a0 The large drill swivels, which I expected (and it would have been really lame if it didn\u2019t).\u00a0 But just behind the drill are four large \u201cfins\u201d (two on each side), that also move.\u00a0 Each fin is on a hinge joint and can fold in or out.\u00a0 This actually adds a bit of motion to what\u2019s mostly a very static piece.<\/p>\n

There aren\u2019t any accessories with this figure, but it does come with a stand.\u00a0 It\u2019s a large rectangular chunk of plastic that works really well at holding up the ship.\u00a0 Unfortunately it isn\u2019t very dynamic when making a scene with the other kaiju.\u00a0 Other stands can work, but they\u2019ll need to be a bit sturdy because of the die-cast metal.<\/p>\n

Like I said earlier, I was really surprised at how well the Gotengo actually fit in with the MonsterArts and Revoltech kaiju figures, especially when it wasn\u2019t intended to.\u00a0 But happy coincidences can really make a toy shelf fun, and I like this little ship so much that I\u2019m even going to track down the Showa version that Revoltech made a few years ago.\u00a0 Now I just need a tiny kick ass Captain Gordon figure to go with them.<\/p>\n
