Well, it might be that I’m exhausted or it could just be I’m tired of doing Rainbow Lantern reviews? I’m thinking even Larfleeze wants to be the last one.

Larfleeze is the sole ringbearer for the Orange light of Avarice in the Johnsified GL mythos. He’s basically greed personified; sometimes dangerous, sometimes funny. Now, don’t be frightened dear readers, but Larfleeze is over five years old, first appearing at the end of 2007. That blows my mind. I guess time flies when you’re reading one giant-ass, event-filled, Green Lantern mega-arc that never ends. I kid, I kid.

But yeah, Larfleeze is into his sixth year of publication and has already scored two figures. And, actually, I’m okay with that. He’s one of those characters that, for many, just shot up pretty high on the most wanted figure list despite being a new character. I can’t always tell if I like him better as a serious threat, a joke character, or even a character that I want to see redeemed. He’s had great stories in each of those areas. I guess if I had to pick, I’d like to see him move a bit back into the serious threat territory, but I think he fits well as any or all of the three when the stories call for it.

The only thing I don’t like about Larfleeze is the inconsistency between his appearances. I don’t want to call comic artists lazy, but they’re either lazy or just too high on themselves to stick with a character’s given look. This is true for plenty of comic book aliens, but Larfleeze has had some pretty drastic changes to his look over the years. So much so that, I would say both the DC Direct & Mattel versions are on-model even though they don’t appear to be the same character.

It’s been a few years since I read the original Orange Lantern stories, but I think the Mattel version may more accurately represent his original look as drawn by Ethan Van Sciver while DC Direct more closely followed the later Philip Tan version. I think they’re both great head sculpts, but I have to lean more towards the DC Direct version on sculpt. That figure’s head has much more personality even though the 4H version is well-executed.

Below the neck, Larfleeze is a big mish-mash of parts. I don’t have them unpacked, but he looks to draw from Black Lantern Abin Sur & Sinsestro for most of the pieces. He does sport new unique hands, a torso, and upper arms. The new pieces are all fine and do a great job of giving Larfleeze a great look with a shortened torso and extended limbs, long & lithe as seen in the comics. Thankfully the arms here are not as long as the DC Direct version, but there is still a slight annoyance with those biceps. Continue to Page 2…

Articulation is almost standard for Larfleeze, but there are some key differences. All the figures with the particular foot mold have limited ankle articulation due to sculpt blockage, but the rest of the leg is what we’re used to. The neck & torso articulation work great. The arms are where the figure stands out. First, the good: ball-jointed wrists and double-hinged elbows make for some great poses, but the drawback here is that the newly sculpted biceps cost us bicep swivels.

I’ve complained for years about removing articulation. The blocked necks. The lack of rocker ankles. These new small-foot ankles. It’s been plenty of little cuts, but this one is deep. Larfleeze’s iconic pose is clutching his lantern with both arms. Good look trying to get that without biceps – even DCD knew to step in and add bicep swivels for their Larfleeze. Ugh! And the sad part is that I, and I bet most of us, would’ve gladly traded in the newly sculpted shoulders to retain the much-more-useful articulation.

Larfleeze does hvae sharp paint and tampos throughout. I did have some black specs on my figure that still need cleaned up, but otherwise the paint was what I expected for a subscription figures.

Larfleeze included one accessory: his lantern. I’m chalking this one up as a personal victory. I haven’t unpacked the DCUC accessories box, so I couldn’t get the money shot with all the lanterns, but one thing I hated about the Lantern that came with Orange Lex was the lack of a handle. Yes, the Orange Lantern has been drawn without a handle, probably as much as it has been drawn with one, but I don’t care. I want the 4H sculpt in a matching set, handles and all. I bitched a lot and whether that was heard or not I don’t know, but hey I’ve got a handle now and I’m excited. Now, I just have to figure out how to get white & black (and really indigo & sapphire in the basic mold too, because I want them all and all matching).

Overall, Larfleeze is a decent entry into Club Infinite Earths. It seems a bit much to get him so soon after Saint Walker (and that Blue Kyle / Yellow Hal 2pk, or as I call it, that review I keep putting off), but I don’t mind getting a DCUC version of Larfleeze, particularly one that varies so much from what DCD chose to do. He has a lot of new bits, probably due to his originally being created for the retail line, and that helps the figure look great. I love the colors too, but that lack of the bicep swivel is a big no-no for me, Bad Mattel!! Bad!!

I still think I have to keep my DCD version out on the shelves because I just love that head sculpt so much, but I don’t mind putting this Larfleeze with the group. And while I teased in the opener that I’m tired of the Rainbow Lanterns… I kinda still feel like I need a better Indigo-1. Getting all these Rainbow Lanterns may be odd, but it’s better than Mattel leaving another team hanging.

More DC Universe Classics Reviews:

For all our DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

Alright, I’m still getting back in the groove here, so you might forgive any typos or grammatical errors today (this means you, Brainlock 😀 ).
