Umbreus Review (Drops Today!)"},"content":{"rendered":"

<\/a>I’m a little behind on 7th Market releases lately, but I was overjoyed when a box arrived from Spy Monkey Creations last week! Inside was their newest release (Dropping today), Bloodlust Umbreus! I liked him before, but SMC is speaking to me with a slick black & red color scheme & vac metal parts! <\/p>\n

Last year, Spy Monkey Creations made the huge leap from making accessories to action figures with Weaponeers of Monkaa. The first round of toys<\/a> won me over with their chunky look and a litany of 80s homages throughout the figures. I\u2019ve been curious to see what new colors the Weaponeers would be available in next and I was happy to rip open the SMC box and find a sweet black & red colorway. <\/p>\n

SMC may have discussed or debuted the figures before the package arrived, but I was out-of-town and blissfully unaware. And let me tell you, there\u2019s a charm in first seeing a toy in person that you just can\u2019t quite explain. It happens rarely these days, but it\u2019s always a treat. <\/p>\n

The figure comes sold & packaged as Umbreus, the Evil Overlord of the Vilhain. In the time since we\u2019ve seen him last, he\u2019s gotten himself into a bit of a pickle, but it seems to have worked out alright. In his never-ending conquest to control Monkaa, he attempted to draw upon a new source of power \u2013 but it consumed him. He\u2019s reborn in this swanky black & red motif and more powerful than ever before. I also happen to think he looks even better than before. There\u2019s something classic about his old purple & green deco of course, but the white face here plays up the skull motif and the black & red conveys \u201cbadass\u201d pretty well. <\/p>\n

Since he\u2019s a Monkaa figure, you\u2019re not getting just Umbreus though. The figure also includes all the interchangeable heads\/hands to make Palidar, Empyreus, Brutok, and the armybuilder, Gohlem. Each features a great new color scheme, but I\u2019ve found that I\u2019d like to keep this build as Umbreus. That\u2019s just one reason that these independent lines like Glyos & Monkaa are so fun \u2013 you can choose to keep a figure in his basic look or make up your own figure. You\u2019ll notice in the pics that my original Monkaa figures have undergone some modification. That\u2019s how they hang out on my shelves. <\/p>\n

That ability to modify does come in handy with these figures too. While I love Monkaa for bringing Glyos interchangeability more in line with traditional action figures, I just wish they were a little taller. Again, the good news is, I can just make \u2018em taller. For this review, I cannibalized my heroic Brutok build, but I\u2019ll be picking up some spare figures to get the pieces I need to add the height to my growing Monkaa collection when the new figures drop today. Bloodlust Umbreus is a \u201cDX\u201d figure which is code for more paint apps. (I could think of a few Mattel figures I\u2019d like to see get the DX treatment). The paint work is pretty sharp on most of the figure. I love the scoured edges on the chest and abdomen panels. It helps give the figure this rough, but detailed look. Also, look sharp on the chest tampos \u2013 we\u2019ve got a new logo for the evil Vilhains. The old logo worked fine, but I love the new one. If you decide to flip the character over to a heroic soul, a piece with the Gearo logo is also included. And yes, the extra paint apps do raise the cost of the figure, but you also get more accessories than with your normal Monkaan. <\/p>\n

As I mentioned above, you get the full complement of heads and the classic sword & sickle weapons. Also included are four vac metal spikes. I\u2019m a sucker for anything vac metal, so I loved these additions. <\/p>\n

Also included in the box from SMC was a set of the Close Combat Accessory Weapon Set. It\u2019s being offered in two formats this go round, the basic set for $3 and a DX set with three vac metal parts for $5. If you\u2019re thinking about snagging these, spring for the extra $2 and pick up the vac metal set. You get an additional spike, a cap, and the business end of SMC\u2019s Demon saber. While Umbreus has great hand attachments, you can\u2019t beat giving him a big ass sword. Heck, everybody looks great with a big ass sword \u2013 that if nothing else should keep SMC in business for years to come. The Monkaans are just the icing on the cake. <\/p>\n
