\"\"<\/a>My favorite toy line of last year was Nickelodeon\u2019s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.\u00a0 It was extremely fun and appealed to my collector side and the kid inside me who still likes to play.\u00a0 But the line wasn\u2019t perfect, and those issues still persist in its second year.<\/p>\n

Leatherhead was one of my favorite figures as a kid.\u00a0 There\u2019s just something about a Cajun crocodile that wields a shotgun and bear traps that\u2019s hard to say no to.\u00a0 So I was really looking forward to his reboot figure, especially after getting a peak at those fantastic sketches Toy Fair.\u00a0 Unfortunately he was a bit disappointing when I finally found him on the peg last week.\u00a0 But I still bought him, hoping he\u2019d be more fun out of the box.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll start off with Leatherhead\u2019s sculpt, which is definitely this figure\u2019s best feature.\u00a0 The toy looks like it popped right off the sketch pages for his character design.\u00a0 He stands slumped forward with large spines running down his back and all the way to the end of his tail.\u00a0 His arms and legs are covered in diamond shaped scales, while his shoulders have a large plated armor look.\u00a0 His webbed claws are outstretched like he\u2019s about to grab an enemy, while his face has a menacing smile.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

All these great sculpted details are regrettably brought to us in the wrong scale.\u00a0 In the new Nick series, Leatherhead is a massive mutant croc.\u00a0 With his slouching body, Leatherhead\u2019s shoulders sit highest at about eight feet.\u00a0 This means he should dwarf all the turtle brothers, who are only about five feet tall.\u00a0 Some reduction is size would have been fine and entirely understandable, especially with how bulky the character is.\u00a0 Unfortunately Playmates gave us a figure that is about Mikey\u2019s height.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Leatherhead\u2019s loss in size wasn\u2019t made up for in articulation either.\u00a0 His shoulders and hips are swivel\/hinges, while his head and tail are swivel joints.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Like a lot of the secondary figures, hinged elbows and knees would have been great here.\u00a0 Without them he\u2019s really stuck doing one or two good looking poses, none of which are very action-y.\u00a0 But the real crime is not giving him a hinged jaw.\u00a0 Like the original, it would have given the new figure loads more personality.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Leatherhead\u2019s paint job is decent.\u00a0 His whole body has been molded in a dark green plastic and all the other details have been painted on.\u00a0 I like the airbrushed light green on his torso and the gritty look of his eyes and teeth.\u00a0 The bandages on his arms and legs are just brown though, and a bit more detailing would have looked nice.<\/p>\n

As for accessories, Leatherhead doesn\u2019t have any.\u00a0 Well, unless you count his tail, which is packaged unattached.<\/p>\n

I really have mixed feeling about this figure.\u00a0 He\u2019s a cheap and fun toy, and I wouldn\u2019t have cared about the articulation issues as a kid (well, except for the non-opening mouth).\u00a0 But what would have annoyed me as a kid is his horrible scale.\u00a0 I want big characters to be big toys, and Leatherhead would have looked fantastic at full size.<\/p>\n
