Six years ago, a Batman theme held down every other wave of DCSH. And DC Classics (2008-2011) certainly never strayed too far from Batman & his rogues. With all that Bat-history, it’s inconceivable that we’re just now getting to Poison Ivy.

You know that ridiculous lettering system we use to determine the importance of things like comic book characters? Normally, I love the idea of quantifying things, but I’ve never really seen any clear rules for it. One collectors’s C-list is another collector’s H-list*.

* – We never really hear about the H-List. We tend to get lazy around D or so and just jump straight to Z. I suppose that makes sense; it tends not to matter much after B-list these days.

I’m bringing this up because I find it very difficult to determine what letter each Batman villain gets. I ask you, do you consider Poison Ivy a primary Batman villain? <e>(And, geez, how long is your list of primaries?) She has a lot of pluses: she’s nearly 50 years old & an original Kanigher creation (along with Sheldon Moldoff), she’s made the jump to both film & television, she’s likely the most high profile villainess after Catwoman. She’s definitely up there, maybe just on the periphery of the core group, similar to Freeze or Two-Face.

And yet, it feels like it’s taken forever to get her into Classics. It’s crazy that circumstances have made her a limited online exclusive targeted to collectors. I’m not lamenting that she’s a wasted slot in the subscription – she needed to be in the line and retail appears to be only the A+ list for some time. She needed to be in the line and her spot in the subscription is a good thing.

But it does have its drawbacks. As I said, she’s a fifty year-old character and one that’s had at last two distinct eras of looks. When her name was thrown out in the great 2012 subscription push last year, the “soda vs. pop” debate rolled out immediately. For most of those fifty years, Ivy appeared as a normal human with an affinity for leafy clothing. In the 90s, she was given a green makeover similar to the figure presented here. The green skin is very popular, but the love of classic runs deep. Ivy is one of the few figures, like Zatanna, that I wish Mattel had figured out a way to release twice. Unfortunately, in the subscription, the only variation available is quality control. <a href=http://www.itsalltrue.net/?p=21555&page=2">Continue to Page 2…

Poison Ivy has a surprising amount of new tooling, but her arms and legs are a mish-mash of Star Sapphire & Donna Troy (right down to Donna’s annoying left hip). The re-use is mostly acceptable, but the figure is really hurt by not having unique hands. It just doesn’t seem right that Ivy can’t be posed commanding her plants to attack.

Ivy did get new feet, two torso pieces, and her head sculpt. I’m in-between on the torso. While like what’s there, I really wish the 4H had taken things up a notch. I love the leafy outline and it is relatively comic accurate, but I would’ve loved to see some scroll work throughout the one-piece suit or even more leafy coverage (though that’s more appropriate for her classic look).

Atop all that though is a killer head sculpt, possibly my favorite female head sculpt in the entirety of the line. The face is a classic 4H face, but it looks fantastic here and the hair on the figure is perfect for Ivy. Any problems I have with the body, the under-detailed costume, the fists, are cancelled out by the head sculpt. It’s fantastic.

The paint work on Ivy is relatively straightforward. I got very luck with some great paint on the face, but there were some bad spots on the upper body (it’s molded the color of the suit with a thick coat of light green to match the skintone).

Articulation is standard for the line with the only notable exception being that annoying mid-torso swivel. I’ve come to accept it – its aesthetic value is very high even if it does limit how the figure can move. It’s a begrudging acceptance though. Everything else works as it should with the exception of the left hip. There haven’t been many Ivy reviews, so I’m not sure if it’s mine or widespread, but like Donna it just doesn’t want to stay flush in a vanilla pose.

Ivy included three accessories, all vines. I’m kinda in-between on these. She needs them, the figure looks far too plain without them, but they annoy me when they slide down or slip off altogether. I’ve got it so the ones on her arms stay up easily, but the leg one perplexes me.

Overall, Ivy was long, long overdue in Classics. In a way I wish she had been done sooner. I want to say a better tooling budget would’ve saved this figure, but the biggest visual decision, to keep the costume relatively detail free, was tooling-neutral. Would the 4H have elected to sculpt the vines to her arms where the tooling not a concern? Or would they have mimicked the torso and kept with the less is more aspect? I don’t know. Other than the lack of an open hand, my handful of dislikes really can’t be pinned on tooling alone.

Looking back over the review, this is another one of those “death by a thousand cuts”, but that’s not the whole story. I pick on the costume, but it’s mostly accurate. The head sculpt is killer. Some articulation is gone, but the figure does look better for it. I’ve wanted a Classics Ivy for a long time and this figure feels that void nicely.*

* – Though I still want a classic version, but that seems a likely as getting Ivy’s sidekick Honeysuckle these days…

More DC Universe Classics Reviews:

For all our DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

Classics got its erstwhile start as a Batman line nine years ago.
