<\/a>For Joe reviews, can you believe I\u2019m still working off the case of GI Joes my wife bought me for Christmas? If that\u2019s not a sign I need to do more Joe reviews, I don\u2019t know what is! Today, I\u2019ve got a quick review of a Renegades Joe, but I don’t consider him one really. Law & Order is more a smart, modern update. <\/p>\n

You\u2019re going to see some pictures of not great figures like Tomax & Xamot in this review. They remind me how far Hasbro has come with G.I. Joe over the last five years. At the time, those figures were decent updates to the classic figures, particularly because I never had them (finally! Tomax! Xamot!). Back in 2007, I was happy the classic costumes were being updated. By 2011, I had come to really appreciate the modernized Joes much more. I’m not knocking the old costumes, I still love the more colorful 30th Anniversary figures like Lifeline & Sci-Fi, but the figures have gotten so much better since 2007 and a lot of the best figures are the modernized ones so… yeah, the more muted<\/em> Joes have won me over. <\/p>\n

Law here is one such Joe. Now, Law is based on his appearance in G.I. Joe Renegades<\/em>. It\u2019s an episode I haven\u2019t seen, but the figure appears to be pretty faithful to the cartoon, except for one major thing \u2013 it doesn\u2019t\u2019 feature an animated design in anyway, opting for the more realistic depiction the toys usually carry. This is similar to what I wish Mattel would\u2019ve done with Young Justice or Public Enemies in their DC line: make the characters, but leave the animated look on the cutting room floor. <\/p>\n

As such, Law looks amazing. While he doesn\u2019t possess the basic look of his classic figure<\/a> (via YoJoe), it doesn\u2019t even register to me. The vibe I get from Law is that he\u2019s much older. He was a new recruit, a Rawhide, in the 1987 film and, thanks largely to the head sculpt, this version seems like he\u2019s a veteran now, having been running Joe prisons for more than a few years. The classic Law figure was sculpted with the face of a Hasbro executive, Kirk Bozigian. It would be cool if this older head sculpt for Law was styled after him again. <\/p>\n

The figure is somewhat of a kitbash. I think all that\u2019s new to the basic figure is that aforementioned awesome head sculpt and maybe the upper arms. He\u2019s also kitbashed from some great base figures, so there\u2019s great articulation throughout including ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles , double-hinged knees, and the ab ball-joint. He moves really well even after you add all the extra bulk to him. <\/p>\n

And the bulk is where this figure shines. While the basic sculpt is assembled from other figures, it\u2019s the gear that really gives Law his unique look. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

First up is the tactical vest. The badge is a little big, but otherwise it\u2019s a great piece. It really doesn\u2019t get in the way of the articulation like I thought it would and I just love the sculpted details: the pouches, straps, the walkie, etc. There\u2019s also an extra holster so Law can stow one extra gun. On that note, there\u2019s also a peg hole on the lower rear of the vest; I’m not sure what it’s for. It could be intended for one of the accessories that were cut from Law since he debuted, which included a walkie-talkie, a flashlight, and a ski-mask head<\/a> (though I doubt the ski mask head would attach to the vest). <\/p>\n

Another favorite part of the vest (can you tell I really like it?) is the handle at the back of the neck that lets fellow Joes drag Law out of trouble should the need arise. It’s a great detail and would’ve had a lot of play value for me as a kid. <\/p>\n

In addition to the vest, Law\u2019s basic attire includes his MP helmet. It feels like it should sit a little lower on his head than it does, but I\u2019ll always favor removable helmets on my Joes. Especially here as Law looks fantastic without it. The helmet earns some bonus points for having the face guard attachment which allows Law to protect his rugged good looks during riots. <\/p>\n

When it comes to weapons, Law is no slouch there either. We\u2019ve got two rifles, a pistol with silencer, and a revolver. The revolver is easily my favorite as he looks great holding it in particular. The silencer and pistol stow on his right leg while the revolver stows in the vest. To round things off, a pair of handcuffs and a night stick were included as well. The handcuffs work great on other Joes and I suppose the night stick would work great on other Joes too if you needed to beat \u2018em down. There’s so much here that I didn’t even realize that three accessories were cut from the figure’s original complement. <\/p>\n

There is of course, Law\u2019s most important accessory too \u2013 Order! (Did I mention I got through all the pics without one \u201cBum-Bum!\u201d joke?)<\/em> Order is Law\u2019s trusty German shepherd and for this figure, even the dog got a great modern update. Instead of being one piece like so many past Joe animals, Order had working neck articulation. I was excited to discover that. He\u2019s also been given some modern gear as well and looks sharp with Order.<\/p>\n

While technically a Renegades release, Law & Order looks fantastic with the main Joes. I wouldn\u2019t be opposed to seeing this figure in that classic, bright deco, but it\u2019s just not something I need. This guy fills the void for the missing Anniversary edition of Law (& Order) just fine. The sculpt on the new pieces is fantastic, there\u2019s plenty of great accessories to spread around, and he really just comes off as a complete figure to me. He encourages me to make up a back story for the years since he was a Rawhide and I think that says something about the quality of the figure too. I’m really hoping we can get back to Joes like this some day… <\/p>\n\n\n\n \t
