I never thought I’d want a Hawkeye so bad, but between the movie and the hunt, things got crazy.

After weeks of searching for Hawkeye and coming up empty-handed, I’d gotten more than a little frustrated. I started to think about grabbing him online. When I needed two or three of the Avengers figures, it didn’t seem like a good option, but getting down to just one more? It seemed more and more worth it.

I had one business trip scheduled last week and I thought I might get in a last search for Hawkeye before finding a way to grab him online. Then the trip details got switched around and I found myself carpooling with co-workers from another part of the company. Ewww. I couldn’t drag them through fifty-dozen Walmarts and turn this two-hour trip into a proper toy hunt. Still, I waited and fate shone upon me.

In a smallish town about halfway between home and our destination, it was decided we needed a break from driving, to get out of the car and walk around. It was over a hundred degrees, so indoor was a must. Enter Walmart. I had expected to find nothing and, honestly, that’s what it usually seems to take these days. I walked into a fresh case and immediately texted my wife with a pic of Hawkeye in hand! The search was over!

I felt lucky. It wasn’t until a few days later that I realized that nearly every Walmart in the four state area was resetting to a planogram that included three pegs for six-inch Avengers. That did deflate my sails a bit – if only I’d know I could walk in and get these easily, but I don’t care. I found ‘em all. And until Hasbro announces more, and they’d better, the search is complete.*

* – As these new cases are hitting, a few collectors have found some paint variations to Loki, Hawkeye, and Cap. Loki is in brighter colors while Hawkeye & Cap are more muted. I don’t really have a need for any of them, but Cap might look better. So, ah, the hunt begins anew…

Throughout the entirety of my hunt, but more so when I was down to Hawkeye, I had to laugh at all the trouble I was going through to get a Hawkeye figure. Four months ago, I wouldn’t care one lick about getting a Hawkeye. I’m familiar with Marvel’s resident archer, but I just never really cared about him. If you’re a Clint Barton fan, and I know they’re out there, I’m sorry. I’m sure there are lovable things about him, but I have trouble finding them in the past. I’m going to pick up his new ongoing though and try again.

That all changed when I saw the Avengers film. I don’t think the movie changed him in any substantial way, but it made me able to appreciate the character for the first time. The script, and more importantly Jeremy Renner, made me care about Hawkeye after the movie. I think Newsarama put it best in one of their never-ending, banal top ten lists, this one being “Things We Learned from the Avengers Movie”. Right there at the top, “Hawkeye can be cooler”. Based on the first issue of his new series, I think that’s what they’re aiming to do. Anyway, of all the Avengers figures, I would daresay I wanted him most. It’s still funny to me. Continue to Page 2…

I’m not as versed on the particulars of Marvel bucks, but I do believe Hawkeye here is another all-new figure. There are some generic enough parts that there could be reuse (or will be reuse) though. All the costume details appear spot-on though, so I’m going with his being an all-new tool. While I like the movie costume and the overall sculpt itself, the real shining piece for me is the head sculpt. There’s a tiny little Jeremy Renner sitting right here on my desk. It’s Hawkeye surely, but I also feel like I could have this guy robbing banks, diffusing bombs, or kicking ass like Jason Bourne easily enough. Hasbro did a great job on the head sculpt.

The only thing I’m not quite sure on (and don’t take my nerd card, but I’ve only seen Avengers once so far), is the harness for the quiver. It looks fine, but I’m not quite sure where it hails from. I also think it’s on the wrong side. It’s only real function appears to angle the quiver, but it angles it opposite of the movie. It does fit on the other way (and when you put it on that way, the spot for the S.H.I.E.L.D. tampo on the figure and spot where the S.H.I.E.L.D. tampo should be on the harness overlap), but I just plucked it off entirely. Most of the pics from the movie don’t show it, the quiver is secure on this back without it, and I’m good not breaking up the front of his costume and being able to put his

Paint has been really great for me on most of this line. I had a little trouble picking out a Cap, but all of the figures I had only seen one of (up until the resets anyway) all had great paint which did save me from lots of heartache. I do want to note again that Hawkeye appears to have slightly different colors in newer cases. This includes the S.H.I.E.L.D. tampo being on the harness instead of the figure, silver sunglasses, and some more drab colors.

Hawkeye features some great articulation including the one-piece ball-joint on the neck, two-piece ball-joints shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles (we need a name for this new peg-in-the-foot design), swivels at the biceps and thighs, double hinges at the elbows and knees, and the ab crunch. Pretty much every articulation point I want can be found here – I still want that waist swivel and a two-piece ball-joint on the head, but I’m not complaining. He moves like I want him too.

In addition to that removable harness, Hawkeye also includes a removable quiver and a trusty bow. These pieces appear to be rather film accurate, but they do suffer a bit for being solid black. If they’re 100% accurate, I can’t complain, but they almost seem too simple in light of the execution on the figure. There is one complaint I will lodge though – there’s no arrows! I’d overlook his having a loose arrow (though that’d be cool), but his quiver is empty! Could we not get a Hawkeye from earlier in the movie?

Overall, while I’m going to have rob my Young Justice figures of their arrows, I love everything else about this figure! The sculpt is top notch, the articulation is at the upper end for 6” figures, and he just looks great alone or in the five-sixths of Avengers Hasbro has provided to us. I know a lot of the appeal for me here is Renner’s portrayal of Hawkeye and that it’s been cast in plastic, but it’s also because it was cast in plastic so well.

Any toy fan should appreciate this figure if they can find it (and hopefully, it’s going to be easier going forward with Walmart adding them into more stores). I’ve still got to work a Cap review in here at IAT, and my Iron Man is actually a non-battle damaged line from IM2, but this little line feels like one of the best things to come out of 2012 already. The only thing that sucks about it is that it still appears to be done with. Not finishing the Avengers is criminal. And heck, I want an updated Fury, Coulson, and Maria Hill. I want that Thor in his more casual gear. An unmasked Captain America. I want more. Someone at Hasbro or Hunter PR just needs to let me know that I’ve not reached the end of this Avengers Studio Series line. It’s just too good to let go.

More 6″ Avengers Reviews:

For more Marvel Reviews, check out our Review Index.

After Vault snagged Loki coming home from a convention five hours away, and After I snagged a Hulk on a business trip three hours away, all that was left was little Hawkeye.
