Our second foray into the mad world of double reviews will feature over a dozen figures between today & Saturday. Let’s kick off with Club Infinite Earths Starman!

If you’d just told me Starman was going to be included in Club Infinite Earths a year ago, I would’ve gotten really excited. I love having the Golden Age Ted Knight (Starman I) and his son Jack (Starman VII) on my shelves and I’m still looking forward to flesh out that legacy on my shelves. I really want the otherworldly Prince Gavyn (Starman IV) on my shelves, preferably in blue. I’d love to have his successor Will Payton (Starman V), preferably in black. I’d get a huge kick of having both the alien Mikaal (Starman III) and the mysterious 1950’s Starman II.

Well, we didn’t get any of those. And we also didn’t get Ted’s other son and Jack’s brother, David (Starman VI), but that’s okay because he pretty much would be the same as Dad with only slight modifications. No, what we got was the eighth Starman, Thom Kallor.

Thom Kallor started out in earnest as a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes back in the early 60s. I don’t know as much about the early Legion as I should, but he dated Dream Girl, hailed from the planet Xanthu, and can control the mass, gravity, or density of any object. In the later years of the original continuity, Starboy grew a beard and adopted the star field costume that this figure sports… but this figure isn’t necessarily that Thom Kallor.

I don’t want to descend into madness here, so I’ll try to keep this brief. In Robinson’s Starman, the post-Zero Hour retconned versions of Thom was fascinated with the past Starmen of Earth (all those guys I named up above, yo) including Danny Blaine, Starman VIII (who also looks just like this figure). To that Thom’s horror, he would learn that he’d eventually travel to the past, take the alias Danny Blaine, and be Starman VIII (and die!!! Dun dun dun!!). But this figure isn’t necessarily that Thom Kallor either.

During Geoff Johns run on Justice Society of America v3, another rebooted version of Thom Kallor appeared in the past sporting the star field costume and temporarily joined the JSA. This version of Thom might be the original, he might not. Johns wrote him as partially crazy (due to too much time travel) which was silly, but it was nice to see Johns using a guy as the “ditz” character for once.

There might be some clue as to which version of Starman this is based on the styling of his hair or beard – I’d expect that they likely make him the Geoff Johns version, but this figure can really be whatever version you want. He’s seems a little old to hang out with the Legion, but the bearded head gets him pretty close. He can hang with the JSA. Heck, he could hang out with Red Robin & gold Captain Atom on a small Kingdom Come shelf (yes, he was in that too, it’s complicated…). He’s versatile enough. Heck, I think he displays great in an eclectic collection just because he’s a cool “clear/glitter” star field figure. Continue to Page 2…

In terms of construction, this guy is the bread and butter of a reduced-tooling subscription. He’s entirely built on the standard buck, sporting only two new pieces – both head sculpts. The masked head is pretty basic, but it looks good. The real gem, to me, is the unmasked head though. It looks fantastic.

I don’t know if this head was always intended to come with the figure (it wasn’t shown when he debuted) or if this was something that the 4H/Mattel went back and added after many, many fan requests, but I’m stoked to have it. I think the best thing I can say is that I just don’t know how I want to display him. My DC figures are pressed for space right at the moment, so there’s no “Legion” or “JSA” section, so he’s just on his own and I keep flip-flopping back and forth on which head to display. The extra head, whichever one at the time, is actually being kept in my desk for easy swapping instead of going to the parts box.

The other thing that sets this figure apart is the clear plastic and glitter used to create his star field costume look. I wish it were a little different – bigger and fewer flakes of glitter might have created a better star field, but I still love the figure. I think I had more fun taking the weird photography pics of him than putting together the joke pics for once!

In terms of paint, we’ve just got some white for the gloves, boots, and eyes on the masked head while most of the paint work goes to the unmasked head. All the paint on mine was sharp and it does look like all the white parts were molded clear and painted white… I kinda want a second one so I could clean off the white paint and having an all-star field figure. That’d be cool.

Accessories? Bupkis beyond the second head, but I’ll take it. The only thing I can even think of him including is a half-masked head and a sandwich, but I don’t want this figure to get any more Geoff Johns than he already is, so I’m good.

Overall, we’ve got another solid entry into Club Infinite Earths! He’s a little low on the value side, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. He looks sharp on the shelf and he’s tempting me to buy a second one; that should speak pretty highly.

Anyway, we’ve choked down Rocket Red and its pretty much clear sailing for the rest of year. Mirror Master. Ivy. Elasti-Girl. Metal Men. Tons of good stuff coming up!

More DC Universe Classics Reviews:

For all our DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

Last week was a little light on reviews, so it seems fitting we kick things into high gear this week with Reviewapalooza II!
