this review I’m mostly going to focus on the differences between the two figures. If you want a full rundown on the figure itself, check out my <a noticed that Takara has a tendency to use more metallic looking plastics and paints on their figures than Hasbro. So I was a bit shocked when I pulled Soundwave out of the box and he was the exact same color as my Hasbro one. Not only were all the molded plastics the same color, but so were the few painted bits that Takara did. This makes me wonder how different the Takara Arcee is going to be from her Hasbro counterpart.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" way to differentiate between the two figures is by using the sticker sheet included with the Takara version. This sheet comprises most of the purple and black bits that run under Soundwave’s arms and chest/Laserbeak. Their shiny metallic look definitely would set him apart from the more subtle Hasbro paint tones.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18701" huge difference between the Takara and Hasbro Soundwaves is in the kind of plastic each company used. The Hasbro version is made entirely out of a very hard and sturdy plastic. (So much so that when my Hasbro figure took a dive off the shelf, one of the points on his crown cracked.) But the Takara version opted to use soft plastics on his crown, forearms, all of the pieces that make up his nosecone, his two tail-fin wings, and Laserbeak’s large wings. Continue to page assuming Takara went this direction because they didn’t want his sharp pokey bits being too brittle. But unfortunately the plastic they used is a tad too soft, almost like a thick plastic cape you’d find on a DC Classics figure. This makes his forearms bend a little, just from the weight of his Minicon. It also makes transforming his legs more challenging because the soft pieces don’t move as freely. I don’t think the plastic will tear, but resistance they give sometimes feels that way.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18703" Soundwave comes with Laserbeak and one other Minicon, a scorpion named Zori. Zori doesn’t really transform as much as he straightens out to become a trident like spear. But the reason I was so interested in Zori is because his tail resembles the tentacles Soundwave uses to interface with computers. Definitely a nice attention to detail that Takara showed while designing Zori, which almost makes him as much a part of Soundwave as Laserbeak is.

<img decoding="async" to the sculpt, the Takara figure does have two new pieces. Both his shoulders have been remolded in hard plastic with Minicon ports that also resemble wing mounted weapons. This is actually my favorite feature of the figure itself. In jet mode these two attachments make him look a bit more dangerous than your average spy drone.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18705" two pictures in my review show my current Soundwave. I liked these newly sculpted pieces so much that I decided to cobble the two Soundwave’s together into an Ultimate Soundwave. The shoulders are easily separated at the joints, which makes for perfect interchageability. Since both figures are the same, you don’t have to worry about color issues either. Plus there are no rubbery areas and he has his Micron ports. Ultimate Soundwave is definitely the best of both worlds.

-Vault

I
