We watched it all with interest, but it was Nekron Week, darn it! That’s all done, so let’s recap.

Things kicked off last week when Toy Guru posted a short video that showcased Vykron:

We didn’t learn much new from the video, but it was cool to see some of Vykron’s pieces in action. While we were doing Nekron Week, I wanted to post some of my thoughts on Vykron, but I was just too busy. I am happy with the selection – the SDCC exclusive is the one figure that will never be in the subscription and that makes it a perfect home for a “divisive” figure like Vykron, not that that was Mattel’s intent. I have some minor nitpicks with him, like his chalice/helmet on the Barbarian look or that they all have to sport the standard loincloth, but overall I think he’s going to be fun. I will probably customize him even further, into three unique characters, but Mattel got the figure off to a good start. I didn’t think the bio would be terribly interesting, but Mattel surprised me there!

We got our first look at the bio courtesy of the gang at AFi who headed down to the ComicBug to check out Mattel’s SDCC display. Click here to check out the pics!

Vykron – Ultimate Eternian Champion, Real Name: Vykron
Fifty years before Prince Adam was born, Vykron the Warrior fought in the gladiatorial arena of Lord Choloh, ruler of the Vine Jungle. Learning from each defeated opponent, he became a master of many combat techniques and weapons. As much a champion as a showman, he would often dress in outlandish garb to rouse the crowd and show off his skills. In his final match, he fought against the great Gygor. Before a cheering crowd, the evil fighting gorilla ripped Vykron body in half, at long last defeating the arena champion. Following this match, Gygor claimed not only the arena championship but rule of the Jungle itself, forcing Choloh to abdicate his throne. In life, Vykron was the greatest of Choloh’s gladiatorial warriors, fighting in any environment at any time.

They surprised me there. I think an overly theatrical gladiator is a bit funnier than Mattel intended, but then they went and ripped him in half to bring it home. Ouch.

This week, Mattel released three more Bios on their Facebook Page:

Griffin – Evil Flying Beasts, Real Name: Varies
Griffins, great flying beasts originally brought to Eternia by Star Merchants, broke free and lived in a wild colony deep in the Vine Jungle. Here they were once again enslaved, becoming the steed of choice for the savage Beast Men living in their treetop villages. Raqquill Rqazz, a Beast Man serving Skeletor from Snake Mountain often calls upon several Griffins to carry him and his master into battle. During the Second Ultimate Battleground, several hundred Griffins were commanded to attack Grayskull Tower, hoping to weaken the Master’s defense perimeter. Soaring high above Eternia, Griffins bring terror to those below! .

The Griffin bio is just a straightforward example of a good bio. It’s interesting that they’re not indigenous to Eternia and that we get another mention of the Vine Jungle so quickly. I suppose it wouldn’t be out there to think that Vykron battled a Griffin in the arena? Continue to Page 2…

Horde Prime – Supreme Ruler of the Horde Empire, Real Name: Anillis Kur
Evil dictator of a galaxy spanning empire, the tyrannical Horde Prime rules from his throne on Horde World. Systematically wiping out many of the Cosmic Enforcers, Anillis gained his greatest triumph when he infected his arch enemy He-Ro with a mind wiping techno-organic virus and banished him to the far off magical planet of Eternia. Knowing his scheming younger brother’s ambition, Anillis sent him on a foolish quest to ensure He-Ro was defeated, never realizing that in doing so he would set about a destined series of events that five millennia later would lead to his defeat at the hands of the twin warriors He-Man and She-Ra!

I was really expecting more out of this particular bio, but it really only recaps what little we already know about him. We do get the new bit about the techno-organic virus that infected He-Ro also erasing his memories, which would seem to indicate that his being “Gray” has a place in the Classics mythos after all.

Snake Man-At-Arms – Transformed Master of Weapons, Real Name: Duncan of the Viper Clan
Duncan heroically served King Randor throughout their battles with Skeletor and the Snake Men as Eternia’s chief war strategist and weapons maker. Exposed to the Serpent’s Ring, Duncan was magically transformed by King Hsss into a Snake Man permanently. Under this evil spell, he used his genius to create great and horrific machines of war for the Snake Men, as they battled for control of Eternia. Eventually, Duncan was forced to battle against Clamp Champ, who had since replaced him as Royal Man-At-Arms. In their epic final duel during the Second Ultimate Battleground, Duncan was mortally wounded, but not before momentarily recovering his humanity thanks to a spell cast by his daughter Teela, the new Sorceress of Grayskull.

Snake Man-At-Arms is similar to Horde Prime’s in that it doesn’t reveal much new. I mean, it feels like we already knew he was going to die as a Snakeman. If you weren’t expecting it though, it could be a big reveal. And you have to laugh at the fact that he’s killed by the Heroic Master of Capture! Normally, Clamp Champ would be the ideal candidate to send in and retrieve a brainwashed fellow soldier, but then again, Man-At-Arms might want his job back… so…

I joke, but I’m not really upset that Man-At-Arms meets his end. MOTU is an epic mythos now being told through several generations. Characters are going to die for the good of the story. Man-At-Arms and Sorceress are unfortunately ideal candidates because they are two of He-Man’s greatest counselors throughout most of the fiction. Without them, he really has to forge ahead on his own, come into his own.

All three of these figures are scheduled to ship in June. Mattel has also confirmed that Beast Man will be offered again, alongside the Griffin. We’ll get these new bios added to our Sortable/Searchable Bio Page at MOTUClassics.Com soon.

Next up, we’ve also a short video featuring the accessories for the July figure, Spikor (as well as a look at Dana as Zuul from Ghostbusters):

I never had Spikor as a kid, so I’m not that big on his trident arm whatsoever. It’s out of place to me. I’ll happily display him with two hands and his club. Also, all the figures should have swappable hands!

And, last but not least, Pixel Dan has put out a shingle on his own corner of the web. It’s definitely a new site to keep your eye on as there are already two sneak peeks at the upcoming Mosquitor!

Okay, that was a big week for MOTU Classics!
