Red Arrow Vault Review"},"content":{"rendered":"

\"\"<\/a>We\u2019re rounding the bend of Nekron week with a look at the DC Universe Classics modern version of Roy Harper, the Red Arrow. Although the figure may not look it, Roy\u2019s character has been through some pretty rough times, especially in the last few years. <\/p>\n

Roy Harper started his super hero career as Speedy, Green Arrow\u2019s original sidekick.\u00a0 Things were pretty good for him back in those days.\u00a0 He helped catch goofy Silver Age super criminals, he became a founding member of the Teen Titans, and he even dated Wonder Girl for while.\u00a0 But nothing stays perfect forever, especially in soap opera world of comic books, and Roy soon had to deal with the disbanding of the Titans and his break-up with Donna Troy.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t help matters that Green Arrow abandoned him for some over the road time with Hal Jordan.\u00a0 The deserted Speedy soon turned to heroin, giving us one of the most memorable covers in comic book history with Green Lantern\/Green Arrow #85.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Roy eventually recovered from his addiction, but his relationship with Oliver Queen had changed and he soon struck out on his own.\u00a0 He eventually joined Checkmate as a drug enforcement agent.\u00a0 While under cover, he met and fell in love with the super villain Cheshire and the two had a daughter named Lian.<\/p>\n

Reestablishing his life as a super hero, Roy took the name Arsenal and eventually rejoined the Titans, but after the death of Donna Troy the team disbanded and he eventually joined the Outsiders. \u00a0Over this time Vandal Savage tried to harvest his organs, he was shot in the chest by Brother Blood, and his throat was slit and he was left for dead.\u00a0 But none of this would compare to what lay ahead.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Roy joins the Justice League, adopting the name Red Arrow and finally settling his differences with Ollie.\u00a0 This newfound peace didn\u2019t last long under the writing of James Robinson.\u00a0 Roy gets his right arm cut off in a conflict with the villain Prometheus.\u00a0 Then Prometheus blows up part of Star City, killing millions.\u00a0 Among the dead is Roy\u2019s daughter, Lian.\u00a0 This amount of loss is too much for Roy to take and he begins taking drugs again while carrying around a dead cat and hallucinating that it\u2019s his daughter. \u00a0(I wish I was kidding about that\u2026)\u00a0 Red Arrow does eventually get a cybernetic arm and kicks his drug habit before the DCnU takes over.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I understand that sometimes have to put characters through a certain amount of hell.\u00a0 Characters need to grow to be successful, which is in itself a mostly foreign idea in comics.\u00a0 But there\u2019s also a point where the amount of pain that is pushed onto a character begins to verge on the sadistic.\u00a0 Instead of creating obstacles for a character to grow around, writers use gruesome devices while only allowing the character to return to the status quo at best.\u00a0 This only creates a torturous environment for the reader with no true payoff, and is one of the reasons I find it increasingly difficult to invest time in most comics these days.\u00a0 Especially DC, where it seems most prevalent these days.\u00a0 (OK, Sorry about that little rant tangent.\u00a0 I\u2019m done now\u2026)\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sculpt on Red Arrow is good, but we\u2019ve seen it before on wave nine\u2019s Green Arrow figure.\u00a0 The only new parts on this figure are his \u201cR\u201d belt and his head sculpt.\u00a0 The head definitely looks like Roy, but I don\u2019t really like the smile he\u2019s making.\u00a0 He\u2019s showing both upper and lower teeth, which doesn\u2019t look very natural.<\/p>\n

Roy\u2019s paint job is really nice, but again it shares the same qualities as the first Green Arrow\u2019s only in red.\u00a0 I was surprised to see that there was slop on the figure, especially with the red fleck issues that my Hawk\u2019s face had.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Red Arrow has the basic articulation of a DC Classics figure, but with a couple of differences.\u00a0 He has the swivel\/hinge \u201carcher wrists\u201d, which allow him to hold his bow properly.\u00a0 Roy seems to have a bit more ball joint movement with his head, where as the original GA figure could only look side to side.\u00a0 Lastly, Roy lost the rocker ankles which the original Green Arrow had.<\/p>\n

Roy also comes with the same bow\/arrow accessory that the original GA figure had, but this time it\u2019s been molded in red and doesn\u2019t have any extra paint apps to bring out the detail.\u00a0 Roy also was given three extra arrows that are brand new sculpts.\u00a0 It\u2019s cool to see more proper accessories, but frustrating because they can\u2019t go in his quiver or attach to the bow.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

All around this is a pretty good figure, especially since the Green Arrow body he\u2019s based on had a nice sculpt.\u00a0 This version of Roy will fit nicely on shelf with a modern collection, without having any annoying additions like a robotic arm or baseball cap.\u00a0 He also goes pretty well with the new Green Arrow, which you\u2019ll see tomorrow.<\/p>\n
