Ashura is one of those rare figures I’ve been looking forward to for a while, but wasn’t quite sure what to think after I received him.

Ashura’s history is a bit complicated since different Buddhist sects see him in very different ways. The first thing you’ve got to know is that Ashura is the name of this race of creature and not his personal name. Ashuras are a low class of demi-gods, or even demons (according to some religions). Similar to the Titans of Greek mythology, Ashuras were cast down from their home on Mt. Sumera and currently reside at its base, beneath the sea.

<img decoding="async" typically are portrayed with three heads or faces, and six arms. In Japanese Buddhism Ashuras are considered as guardians even though they have extreme emotions. Often times they will become obsessed with passionate emotions and display extreme forms of wrath or pride. An Ashuras middle face is usually in a state of suffering, while the other two depict a countenance of war and anger.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full interesting things about this figure is that it isn’t a representation of the Four Heavenly Kings. In most sects of Buddhism this creature is portrayed more as a demon than a guardian, so it’s not too much of a leap to consider him as an adversarial character for the more righteous Heavenly Kings. This is especially nice since these figures are a bit smaller than your average Revoltech and it gives the other deities an opposition that’s in scale.

<img really come to love the intricate sculpts on these figures. The sculptor did a fantastic job of giving each figure the feel of a living statue. This is most evident with the figure’s flowing robes and various fabrics. This figure even has a few additional pieces of jewelry sculpted around his neck, but still resting underneath his various scarves.

<a much as it’s furious. Of course compared to the other two, he seems a bit calmer. One great little attention to detail on the Ashura’s head is the two metal rings they used for his earrings. Did the figure need metal earrings? No, but it adds a level of caring detail that I love.

<a different is that the halo was made out of a translucent dark yellow color and then painted over with a green that resembles tarnished brass. In front of a light this gives off a really neat glowing effect, and I really wish the other two had a similar feature.

<img decoding="async" that the figure is almost burnt because of how dark it can get. This same effect was used on his three faces, but it wasn’t as heavy and there’s plenty of detail. There was an interesting technique used on Ashura’s clothing to make them shine like worn copper in certain areas.

<a a fantastic amount of articulation, but there are some issues too. First off, his heads, neck, shoulders, elbows, chest, waist, hips, knees, and ankles are all Revolver joints. To make articulation a bit easier, his halo and tails to his robe were also given Revolver joints. One of the few difficulties I’m having with this figure is that a lot of his articulation is partially blocked by clothing or body parts. His arms in particular seem too bunched up and tend to get in the way of each other.

<a a Jaki demon, Ashura’s base is a piece of rock. The base itself is sculpted very nicely, but it’s definitely not as exciting. Ashura also comes with a traditional boomerang shaped Revoltech base too.

All of Ashura’s other accessories are entirely comprised of alternate hands. There’s a set of clutching, open palm holding orbs, holding, praying, and holding weapons. I was hoping to get multiple sets of hands that were the same. This way he could be holding the same gesture on all six arms. I was also disappointed to discover that his bow and arrow are molded into their respective hands. This really limits his weapon wielding abilities.

<a disappointment is the lack of weapons and more alternate hands. This really would have made the figure perfect, but I’m sure it would have also upped the price. So for now, I’ll
