<\/a>We should all love Kickstarter. It\u2019s a great service that connects folks with ideas with people willing to invest of them. I\u2019ve invested in a few Kickstarter projects, but the one I\u2019m happiest with is the one I\u2019ll be reviewing today: Outlandish Mini Figure Guys (or OMFG! for short) Series One. <\/p>\n

OMFG! is as outrageous as the names implies. This project first took shape when a group of like-minded individuals came together on the October Toys forum. Designs for the figures were submitted by forum members from around the world and voted on by the community over at October Toys. And your five final candiates were: <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

The final five designs were then sculpted and the project placed on Kickstarter to obtain funds for overseas production. That\u2019s when I first heard about OMFG! and became enamored with the little guys. During the pledge period, 425 backers pledged over $15,000 – well over the $11k the gang behind OMFG needed. <\/p>\n

As their release date got closer, we learned more details about the line. We knew that the basic fleshtone set would be available at October Toys online store<\/a> and that a special black set was the Kickstarter exclusive for backers pledging $25 or more, but it turned out we were in store for a whole rainbow. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

The folks at Onell had a \u201cPheyden Blue\u201d colorway available late last year. University of Muscle<\/a> would sell the OMFG in yellow, Little Rubber Guys<\/a> in green, Rotofugi<\/a> in a royal blue, and finally the figures would be available in a hot pink, a special colorway for the five artists behind the figures. So far, I\u2019ve snagged the six available sets and one of the Artist\u2019s Proofs. Monsterforge\u2019s Multiskull will be available on his blog this Friday evening<\/a>, and I\u2019m keeping an eye to the future on the hot pink versions of the remaining three. At the end of the article, I\u2019ll post links to all the available sets. <\/p>\n

In case you haven\u2019t figured it out, OMFG! is a little addictive. I had originally been content to stick with my Flesh colored and Kickstarter Black sets, but each of the other colorways has appealed to me and I ended up wanting them all the same. In fact, I\u2019m still wishing we could get these guys in red and white. Yeah, you could say I\u2019ve got OMFG! Fever…<\/p>\n

Stroll<\/strong>
\nI\u2019ll start with Stroll since I have him in all colors. I\u2019ve been planning to keep my Kickstarter Black set in their package, a kind of silly \u201cI had a very small<\/em> part in helping make these\u201d sorta thing, but seeing this picture of the other six Stroll\u2019s lined up has me rethinking that decision… <\/p>\n

Stroll was the creation of John \u201cSpanky\u201d Stokes<\/a> and was sculpted by George Gaspar, of October Toys\/ToyBreak<\/a> fame. If I get into favorites, I\u2019m going to end up saying they\u2019re all my favorite, but I do really like Stroll here. He kinda reminds me of a grumpy Care Bear and because of that I think he benefits the best from having all the colors together. They look like a little indigenous species ready to protect the color\/emotional spectrum. Stroll has a lot of great detail work on the paws, horns, and he\u2019s got a little tat \u201cback there\u201d as a nod (I assume) to his creator. I love his overall look, but I do wish he had some sculpted lines on the eye to give him a little more life.<\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

Phantom Shithouse<\/strong>
\nThis one is my wife\u2019s favorite, though she refers to him by a less provocative nom de plume, the Phantom Outhouse. The Phantom here was designed by Kyle Thye<\/a> & sculpted by Ralph Niese<\/a>. They did a marvelous job. While I\u2019m happy to line up my Strolls for a \u201cCare Bear Stare\u201d the concept behind the Outhouse leaves me wanting to break out my paints (check out the great art in this short OMFG comic<\/a>). Again, the sculpted details here are what sell the figure (who stands about an inch wider than he is tall). The uh, \u2026poo looks particularly goopy, but the Outhouse details are even more fantastic, from the rotted, broken planks to the little hinges and latch. The Phantom has a ton of personality despite being the only one in OMFG! Series One without a proper face. <\/p>\n

King Castor <\/strong>
\nAgain, I\u2019m ready to declare another one my favorite. King Castor is the creation of Dominic \u201cEvil Earwing\u201d Campisi. I love the walking castle concept here and the little details like the tower arms, the cannon, and the door (I don’t know where he’s gonna find a ‘little castles’ room, though). Just about anywhere you look, you\u2019ll find a little detail on this guy \u2013 including what looks like a boiler on his back. I\u2019m not sure about that part of the design, though that may be what\u2019s needed to animate a castle man, so no complaints here. Castor is also notable for being the angriest of the bunch. If you perceive these guys as a team (and I do), Castor is the muscle, the big guy you don\u2019t mess with. Continue to the Page 2 Gallery…<\/a><\/p>\n

Crawdad Kid<\/strong>
\nCrawdid Kid is an interesting addition to the group because he varies so dramatically from the others and I love it. The inclusion of Daniel Yu\u2019s<\/a> creation is great because it helps to ensure that the line isn\u2019t locked into one theme or type of figure. While all the figures are great, the Kid here represents more of the M.U.S.C.L.E. end of the spectrum. It does set the Kid apart from the rest of the set in a way though. It wasn\u2019t until I had him in person that I really appreciated him, and that\u2019s because his sculpt is much better observed in person, particularly the awesome detail in his face. The details don\u2019t stop there though, while the other figures do a great job with furry or rocky details, the Kid is a great mix of organic and inorganic sculpting. The head and hands are delightfully crustacean and irregular while the clothes are sharp and dapper. If we\u2019re lucky enough to get more human proportioned, cloth-wearing characters in future sets, it\u2019ll be because the Kid here made sure that the line covered that base in the first wave. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

Multiskull<\/strong>
\nHere\u2019s that favorite thing cropping up again. What makes Multiskull so fun is that he\u2019s exactly as described. The creation of Charles \u201cMonsterforge\u201d Marsh<\/a>, Multiskull is completely composed of skulls from the honking big one in his torso to the smaller skulls that fill out his legs and arms. The detail here is (yet again) amazing with there being ‘yet another’ skull just about everywhere you look. I don\u2019t know what Monsterforge intended for this guy\u2019s personality, but he strikes me as the type of guy to laugh in the face the danger, the wildcard for this first assortment. As I mentioned earlier, the AP Multiskull will be available this Friday evening at Monsterforge\u2019s blog<\/a>. I\u2019ll put a note on Twitter when it goes live and you\u2019ll either see me jubilantly celebrating his order of whining that I missed out later in the evening. <\/p>\n

I can only really think of one criticism and, honestly, it’s not particularly applicable – it’s something that would fundamentally change what these guys are, but it’d similarly be against my nature not to want it. Some of these sculpts required assembly and I can’t help but wish some Glyos pegs had been used to put these guys together. I know, I know – that’s not what these are about. They’re harkening back to similar great lines like MUSCLE or Monster in my Pocket and I love them for that. I’d really like to get some movement here, but I know – that pretty much misses the point. Personaly, I blame Glyos \u2013 it\u2019s hard to resist the desire to give my Pheyden big goopy, poopy arms or to toss these pieces in with SMC’s gear and make a Phantom Shitsword. <\/p>\n

Overall, OMFG is a great step forward for toy collectors. Not because they\u2019re a cool new thing for us to collect, but it\u2019s really what the 7th Market is all about. These are toys from collectors for collectors. Some really talented individuals put this line together, some other generous individuals contributed to make these toys a reality, and now we can all enjoy them. Has the future of toys ever been so bright? I\u2019d love to see these guys go mainstream \u2013 though a certain walking restroom facility might need a name change. These figures are surely selling great as an online toy, but I\u2019m certain they\u2019d fly off the shelves if they could get to them. This is a great line and I have high hopes for it. <\/p>\n
