<\/a>I don\u2019t pay much attention to McFarlane toys anymore.\u00a0 I\u2019m not interested in sports, and, back when I did buy their figures, they were more statue than toy and had a tendency to break.\u00a0 So I was shocked to see how cool The Walking Dead figures turned out to be.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a little behind on The Walking Dead.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been watching the TV show, which I love, but I haven\u2019t gone back and started reading the comics yet.\u00a0 This is another reason why I didn\u2019t pay much attention to the early pics of this toyline.\u00a0 Not only did I assume they wouldn\u2019t move, but that these versions of the characters wouldn\u2019t matter to me.\u00a0 I realized just how wrong I was, standing in that TRU aisle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I decided to have a rare outburst of self-control and decided to only pick up two of the figures instead of all four.\u00a0 Rick Grimes and the Zombie Lurker would have to do.\u00a0 It was easy leaving Michonne since I didn\u2019t know who she was, although I really did like her accessories.\u00a0 But that Zombie Roamer was hard to put back.\u00a0 He had a cool action feature, plus we all know you can never have enough zombies in your horde.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sculpting on these two figures is excellent and reminds me of the days when the Four Horsemen still worked for McFarlane. \u00a0Even though Rick isn\u2019t as visually striking as the Zombie, he\u2019s still got multiple textures on his various layers of clothing.\u00a0 From the soles of his shoes, the folds in his pants and shirt, to the leathery look of his gun belt, Rick looks like a perfectly normal cop.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Zombie Lurker looks fantastically morbid.\u00a0 Rick just has a few layers of clothing, but this zombie has clothing, rotting flesh, muscle, tissue, bone, organs, and various pieces of unidentifiable gore.\u00a0 It seems like every time I study him I discover something new.\u00a0 Just a few minutes ago I noticed that the pinky finger on his left hand is half flesh and half bone.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The paint job on both figures really adds to the details of the sculpt.\u00a0 Although Rick\u2019s clothing is mostly a drab brown, there are still plenty of light and dark highlights to add depth.\u00a0 There\u2019s also the bloody rag around his right hand and the amount of scruff\/dirt on his face.\u00a0 Each figure I saw had different their own unique application.\u00a0 I picked one out that had a bit more scruff, dirt, and blood because I thought it fit the character better.\u00a0 But I could just have easily picked out a cleaner cut Rick.\u00a0 I really like these types of variations.<\/p>\n

Something I\u2019m not as big a fan of is how Ricks eyes are painted looking to his left.\u00a0 It looks really great from certain angles, but terrible from other.\u00a0 I would have preferred a straight gaze which wouldn\u2019t have limited his other poses.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Zombie has an equally impressive paint job.\u00a0 His blue jeans and grayish brown skin are a constant with most of the figures, but each had their own unique application of blood and dirt also.\u00a0 Like Rick, I picked out a particularly dirty Zombie because I thought it looked much more realistic.\u00a0 Something else I particularly liked about this figure is the bright red wet look they gave to his guts and the creepy glow of his eyes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Articulation on both figures is great, but also frustratingly limited.\u00a0 Rick has a ball jointed head and ankles.\u00a0 His shoulders, elbows, and wrists are all swivel\/hinges.\u00a0 His waist is a swivel, while his knees are hinges.\u00a0 His hips are this odd combination of swivels attached to ball joints on the upper thighs.\u00a0 But some of this articulation is made useless because the figure was sculpted to stand in a certain pose.\u00a0 You get a bit more freedom above the waist, but even then the sculpt of his jacket arms looks odd sometimes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Zombie has a swivel\/hinge neck, shoulders, right elbow, and guts.\u00a0 His left elbow, wrists, and knees are all hinges, while he has swivels for his left bicep and both thighs.\u00a0 And for some odd reason he has a ball jointed right ankle, while the left is molded in place.\u00a0 Like Rick, his biggest posing issues are from the waist down, although I was impressed that his guts have their own articulation.\u00a0 You don\u2019t see that too often.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rick comes packed with accessories.\u00a0 Not only does he get his sidearm, but there\u2019s also a small axe that can attach to his other hip.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s his duffle bag, which attaches to his right shoulder, and the four different rifles\/shotguns that fit into it.\u00a0 Rick Grimes is ready for the apocalypse.<\/p>\n

The Zombie has more of an action feature than accessories.\u00a0 He was made to be taken apart.\u00a0 First you can remove his upper chest from his torso, turning him into a Zombie Crawler.\u00a0 If that wasn\u2019t enough, you can also remove a lump of intestines and organs from the dangling guts.\u00a0 His upper head is also removable between the upper and lower jaw.\u00a0 Last but not least, his left arm can be detached at the bicep and then again just above the wrist.\u00a0 All these various combinations could really allow for some army building.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve been impressed with a McFarlane figure.\u00a0 Even though these figures are at an odd scale, and there are still a couple of sculpting issues when it comes to their articulation, I\u2019m pretty satisfied with my purchase.\u00a0 These figures retail for about $18 each.\u00a0 The price is a bit high, but I feel like the amount of detail, articulation, and accessories\/action features is well worth it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll probably even go back and pick up that Zombie Roamer.<\/p>\n
