<\/a>Crazylegs. The very name evokes silliness and confusion. Joe collectors might wonder who among us was the one clamoring for an update to Crazylegs. Well, look no further my friends, it was me. Though my excitement for the figure was tempered by the arduous search to find him on the pegs. <\/p>\n

In my childhood collection, Crazylegs probably got a little too much play considering his bit status in Joedom. I don’t believe he was ever featured on the cartoon, and the most important thing he did in the Marvel comics was die. And yet somehow, he rose through the ranks of my personal army and became an integral member of the Joe Team until he was claimed by The Great Flood\u2122 along with nearly all of my other Joes. <\/p>\n

The original figure was an entirely unique sculpt and was probably most notable for his goofy grin, strange rubbery backpack, and that his file card took the time to point out that he could have been a great organist. Lucky for the Joes, his fingers were too short (what?) and he ended up being a world-class paratrooper instead. Despite the original figure not having a working parachute, he went on many a jump from the back of my Tomahawk (one of all-time best Joe vehicles ever). When the 25th line started gaining steam, Crazylegs was on my short list, but he didn’t make the cut up in Pawtucket. Patience has paid off though, as the line is again bringing some classics designs back to the pegs.<\/p>\n

But collecting this line of late has also required a lot more patience. Between Wal-Marts dropping pegs or Target loading up on Duke & his personal missile battery, it’s been tough finding them. If you follow us on Twitter (@itsalltruenet<\/a>), you’ve no doubt seen my tweets about “#WhereAreAllTheJoes”. It’s been rough finding them here. This is the only Crazylegs I’ve come across, there was just the one Low-Light (much to Vault’s dismay) and – even though he isn’t classic – neither of us ever had a shot at that last Arms Dealer Destro. It’s been a frustrating year as a casual Joe collector here at IAT. <\/p>\n

So when I found Crazylegs, or Crazy Legs as he’s now called on the packaging, I was appropriately ecstatic. The line’s had some really great figures of late and I expected nothing less of Crazylegs. And he did live up… mostly.<\/p>\n

Crazylegs has a great sculpt that, at first glance, appears to capture most of his classic details. But upon closer examination, you realize that Crazylegs is entirely<\/em> built with reused pieces. There’s nothing unique to the base figure. The torso hails from Snake Eyes v3, the legs from Arctic Snake Eyes & the Snow Serpent, the arms from Lift Ticket, and the one that really surprised me – the extra head from the POC Desert Zartan, his “Sandstorm” disguise. <\/p>\n

It’s not a knock against the figure that no new tooling was used, it’s actually rather amazing that all the pieces came together so well and made a sharp looking Crazylegs. Aside from a vestigial peghole in his chest and the loss of his trademark smirk, this Frankensteined Crazylegs get the job done. <\/p>\n

Crazylegs features standard articulation for the POC line thanks to so many re-used pieces. Nice range on his ball-jointed head, more ball-joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and ankles, wrists swivels, the torso joint, and double-hinge knees. The oversized parachute gets in the way of the hip articulation a bit, but the straps can be moved around a bit to most of the poses you’re used to from a 25th\/ROC\/POC Joe. He’s a lot of fun to pose and play with. I think that’s one thing the Joes have always been good for since the beginning and it’s no different here. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

The paint work on my Crazylegs was clean throughout and the muted colors are definitely an improvement over the classic figure. The figure has a great, rugged look to him. He’s been on a few jumps and it shows, I daresay he’s come out better being made now than when the 25th line debuted.<\/p>\n

The only place I would’ve liked to see some more paint is on the parachute harness. While the sculpt certainly provides some opportunity, the whole piece is devoid of paint apps and that’s a shame. The harness itself is removable, but not without some work. It unsnaps at the back, and could slide off, but the straps around his thighs can’t slide over the pouches. If you want a packless Crazylegs, you’ll either need to cut the straps or use a small screwdriver to disassemble the legs (which is really a lot easier than it sounds). <\/p>\n

Unlike a lot of his POC brethren, there aren’t a ton of accessories pouring out of the package when you rip open Crazylegs. There’s his harness, borrowed from the 25th Ripcord, but I don’t tend to view that as an accessory since it’s pretty well attached. Crazylegs did get three weapons: a pistol from Zartan, a rifle from Firefly, and the Pit Commando’s machine gun. He can hold all three well, but none of them exactly invoke the original figure’s weapon. <\/p>\n

Crazylegs also includes his removable helmet and removable goggles. This is one nice upgrade over the original. I love removable helmets and it’s nice to finally give Crazylegs a more relaxed feel should he want it. I do lament the loss of the chin-strap, but I suspect the helmet is much like the rest of the figure and is on permanent loan from another figure. Crazylegs’ goggles might be the only unique piece on the figure. A stand is also included. <\/p>\n

While I love most of the elements of this new Crazylegs – he looks great despite the part re-use, the drab colors help give the figure a realistic look, he can hold his weapons – there are still two big nitpicks I have with this figure. The first is simple – there’s no where to put the guns, nary a single holster on the whole guy. One of the greatest features of recent Joes was the ability to stow their gear. I’ve got all these guns, but two of ’em are destined for the parts bin since there are no holsters or straps to add them to the figure.<\/p>\n

But my biggest issue is the exact same complaint I had nearly a quarter-of-a-century ago – Where’s the Parachute?! This guy is supposed to jump out of planes and helicopters to get behind enemy lines. He’s practically screaming to be given a working parachute. I have other Joes with working parachutes (though they sadly came after The Great Flood\u2122, meaning Crazylegs never got to steal them), so why not give one to this guy here? The part reuse had to keep his costs down, but Hasbro left us out in the cold. I had to look for a quick fix to finally, finally give Crazylegs the flight he deserved. Sure, he could’ve asked Cap nicely, but where’s the fun in that?<\/p>\n

Overall, I’m going to have to sum up with the notion that Crazylegs could be better. Just a little bit more love – a unique head, a holster, a working parachute, just something that makes him feel more unique or fun. That said, with me filling in the gaps with a heaping healthy dose of nostalgia, Hasbro did a good enough job and they easily got me to bring one home with me. At least once I finally found it (and worse still the Wal-Mart where I finally picked up Low-Light, Crazylegs, and Steel Brigade is now packed full with peg after peg of that Renegade wave).<\/p>\n

Anyway, I’m happy to cross one more classic Joe off my list, particularly one I wasn’t sure we’d get. Now where’d I put that online petition for Marine Dress Blues Gung Ho, Payload, Covergirl, & Iceberg…<\/p>\n
