<\/a>While checking out the various aisles at my local Target, I was floored the other day. I\u2019m always happy to check out what Fisher-Price has to offer in the way of DC Comics characters, but I didn\u2019t expect to find an awesome Imaginext version of one of my fondest childhood toylines.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been intrigued by the various Imaginext lines. With the various characters, monsters, vehicles, and playsets that are all compatible, it\u2019s definitely one of those toy lines that I wish had been around when I was a kid. With the addition of the DC license I\u2019ve been envying the sets even more lately, but I still hadn\u2019t pulled the trigger on a purchase until last weekend. Sitting in the aisle were various dinosaurs wearing mechanized harnesses that could carry passengers. Dino-Riders had returned!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Mattel bought Tyco in 1997, but this isn\u2019t exactly the Dino-Riders we knew as kids. There are no Valorians or Rulons, and the dinosaurs have a simplified and cartoony look to them. But there\u2019s no doubt that the spirit of Dino-Riders has influenced this line.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Imaginext doesn\u2019t really give a specific storyline, but you can infer from the various figures that the humans are using the dinosaurs to help mine for crystals. Some of the humans are dressed in darker colors with more sinister designs and can easily be considered the bad guys of the sets. Interestingly, another big difference from the original line is that all the dinosaurs are wearing helmets, not just the bad guy\u2019s dinos.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I picked up one of the cheaper sets, the Raptor, to try out the line. From what I can tell, it looks like he\u2019s a completely new mold and not just a reuse of some of the older Imaginext dino lines. He\u2019s got a pretty detailed sculpt to him with plenty of scales and even a repeating diamond pattern running down his back. He\u2019s been molded in that dark red plastic with bits of black speckled throughout and then painted yellow on his underside. He\u2019s got basic movement with his mouth and tail being hinge joints, while his arms and legs are swivels. But you can still get a couple of really nice poses out of him.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

The human he comes with is a basic Imaginext figure. His body has been molded in red, while his head, arms, and legs are molded black. There are some painted yellow designs to make his suit look like techno armor. I was surprised to discover his shoulders are swivel hinges, but unfortunately his legs are on the same hinge and move together. His head and wrists are swivel joints.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The human comes with three accessories. First is his translucent red armor that his chock full of sculpted details and makes him look much more menacing. Then there is his futuristic pickaxe weapon and chunk of crystal, both of which are molded from the same translucent red as his armor.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Raptor\u2019s accessories are his shiny chrome helmet which clips onto his head, and his dino-riding harness which also clips in place. Both the harness and helmet have some nice sculpting on them with plenty of armor plates, rivets, and even the cushions to the driver\u2019s seat. The harness seems to be mostly for transport as there\u2019s a large basket in the back to hold the crystal. But then there\u2019s also this strange clamp in front that doesn\u2019t seem to open wide enough to hold anything.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Raptor costs about $10, which is really great considering how much you get with him. The toys themselves are basic and durable enough for the young children they\u2019re meant for, but not so simple that they don\u2019t appeal to older kids like me. I\u2019ve been waiting years for a line like Dino-Riders to return, and these are close enough that I\u2019ll definitely be buying more. Hopefully in the future, since Mattel does own rights, we\u2019ll even see some of the bad guys sporting ant, snake, and shark heads.<\/p>\n
