<\/a> I’ve been hitting the stores looking for Star Sapphire, but still no luck! So Armless Stel Week<\/strong> continues towards its one-armed conclusion. I’ve mentioned that this wave left me feeling dissatisfied and I’m reviewing two big reasons today. Movie Masters G’Hu<\/strong> and the so-called 3pk of B’dg<\/strong>, Dex-Starr<\/strong>, & Despotellis<\/strong>.<\/p>\nI’m feeling particularly vexed by the Green Lantern Movie Masters. I’m probably<\/em> not going to buy them, but I see some potential in some of the aliens like Rot Lop Fan, the Green Man, Isamot Kol, etc. Even though I’m excited at the prospect of any<\/em> version of Rot Lop Fan, the figures haven’t always looked great at the various conventions over the last few weeks. Will I buy them when I see them? I do love all things Green Lantern (well, everything except Hal Jordan), but I don’t know if that’ll translate into buying Movie Masters. And yet, I already have one…<\/p>\n I bring all that up because I want to illustrate that I’m not opposed to mixing some of these Movie Masters in with DCUC. That I don’t think they’re all bad figures. So when I say that it really annoys me that Movie G’Hu was put in this wave, you know it’s not out of some misplaced angst against the Movie Masters or the figure itself. It just shouldn’t be there in my opinion. We have finally found one character\/figure where I’ll actually say, “Mattel wasted a slot”.<\/p>\n I know he’s there to help hook us DCUC collectors on the GLMM line and I can respect it as a marketing decision, but I wanted to complete Stel and it kinda sucked that I had to buy a figure that’s not really in the same scale or style as the rest of the line. I know that stands in contrast to what I said earlier about possibly mixing in them and I may sound really nitpicky or hypocritical, but I want the option to mix them in. I don’t want to “have” to buy a movie figure to build a comic figure.<\/p>\n With my whining out of the way, I don’t mind the G’Hu figure itself as much as I thought I would. His movie appearance is loosely based on his comic look. He’s a very minor character in the comics though. He appeared in the first issue of the current Green Lantern Corps<\/em> book. I think that was about five years ago now and he might’ve shown up a half dozen times in that span.<\/p>\n The figure’s sculpt is consistent with the other movie aliens we’ve seen previewed. He appears to have somewhat of an exoskeleton look with lots of little protrusions, bumps, and other textures throughout the figure. It’s a nice sculpt and I think it makes G’Hu look like a cool toy on the shelf. The figure does feature a soft, pliable plastic for his lower legs, hands, the extra little arms by his neck, and his tentacles. It all turns out okay, but I wonder if his softer plastic feet will start to bend while he’s on display.<\/p>\n The paint on G’Hu was surprisingly nice – he was one of the nicer painted figures in the wave for me. The mix of metallic greens and flat greens looks great and his purple skin makes for a great contrast. He has some light metallic blue brushing on his face and I find myself wishing they’d done that throughout all the exposed skin areas of the figure, though this deco may be movie accurate.<\/p>\n Articulation is really strange on G’Hu. There’s some normal points like the ball-jointed head (slightly blocked by the tentacle hair), ball joints on the shoulders, the pincer arms, and the mid-torso (limited), and swivel wrists, but there’s also some weird ones like the angled cut joints on the knees, elbows, and hips. At first, I didn’t like it much because Movie Masters should be better articulated, but the more I played around with him the more I got used to it. It really works with the sculpt to produce some strange poses. I got a decent amount of enjoyment out of the figure even though I didn’t really want to buy him. Continue to B’dg, Dex-Starr, & Despotellis…<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n There’s a lot of smaller animal characters in the DC Universe and I don’t know if there’s a good way for Mattel to get to them. They took their first stab at it in this wave with a “three-pack” of B’dg, Dex-Starr, & Despotellis. I put three-pack in quotes because Despotellis isn’t a figure. He’s an accessory, which makes this a two-pack in my eyes. Anyway, I want a lot of the smaller characters like Detective Chimp, Ch’p, Rex the Wonder Dog, etc., but I don’t feel like I got my money’s worth with this two-pack of pack-ins so I\u2019m not sure how I want Mattel to handle them going forward.<\/p>\n B’dg was the highlight for me. In the early 80s, the Green Lantern Corps recruited a young freedom fighter named Ch’p into the Corps. Ch’p’s planet is home to an intelligent race of chipmunks. Ch’p’s history is a pretty fun read, but he ultimately dies at the hands of a yellow truck. When the Green Lantern Corps is reformed post-Rebirth, another member of Ch’p’s race is recruited. Enter B’dg. B’dg hasn’t gotten to be much more than a background character, but it’s nice seeing a chipmunk in the GLC again. No, really. <\/p>\n B’dg is an all-new sculpt and it’s spot-on. He’s got a limited ball-jointed head and cut joints at the shoulders and hips. It’s not much, but it works on a figure his size. The paint and tampos on B’dg were nice and clean too. He does usually need to rest on his tail for balance, but otherwise he’s a great little figure. <\/p>\n Though you can’t tell from some of the artist’s depictions, the DC Direct pack-in, or the Mattel figure, Dex-Starr is a normal (albeit blue) Earth cat. When drawn correctly, he’s just like every house cat you’ve ever seen except that he wears a Red Lantern uniform and coughs blood instead of hairballs. So what went wrong? I don’t know. Some artists feel the need to draw him somewhat anthropomorphized and that artwork apparently ended up as the source material for both figures. It’s a shame, because Dex-Starr was one of the breakout characters and we basically missed our chance at getting a proper figure from both DC toymakers.<\/p>\n Little Dexter was abandoned as a kitten, but was quickly adopted by a lonely woman in New York City. He lived with her for a time, but a robbery attempt on the woman’s apartment went awry and she was killed. Dexter quickly found himself without a home for a second time. He lived on the streets as an alley cat until he was caught by two morons who planned to get their kicks by drowning him. Luckily, a red ring found Dex just before he hit the water and a new character was born. Dex-Starr is easily the second most popular Red Lantern after Atrocitus.<\/p>\n The figure itself is fine if Dex-Starr was from a planet of upright cats the way that B’dg is from a planet of upright chipmunks. The sculpt is done well and the animal head is excellent with the open mouth\/screaming looking great with or without the “vomit blood” attachment. Speaking of that, I don’t know if it has to be pink or what, but it really should’ve been red! Dex features the same articulation as B’Dg, except that his head is a simply swivel joint. Like B’dg, Dex-Star usually has to rest on his tail to stand.<\/p>\n The two little figures included an accessory of the Yellow Lantern Despotellis. It’s actually my second Despotellis. I got my first one in what I now know was a “two pack” with Sinestro from DC Direct. Despotellis is a sentient virus and therefore invisible to the naked eye. That easily makes him the most out of scale DC figure ever, but I still think it’s a cool idea. Like the DC Direct one before it, Despotellis does have an articulation point that allows the “head” of the virus to rotate. Despotellis is cast in translucent yellow and required no paint.<\/p>\n Overall, I appreciated G’Hu’s figure, but he’s probably destined for storage unless I buy some other Movie Lanterns to put him with. He’s a solid figure with a neat sculpt, decent paint, and some interesting articulation, but he’s just not part of DCUC despite how he was sold. <\/p>\n For the “three pack”, B’dg is destined for my shelves based on the merits of the figure while Dex-Starr earns a reprieve for being a decent sculpt even if it doesn’t depict him appropriately. The head sculpt looking great with or without the attachment is what really impresses me. Despotellis will go in the accessory bin, I think DC Direct did a better job on him.
