Fingers crossed, I hope I get a good one. Reaching into the pile of unreviewed toys, it looks like I’ll be taking us back a couple weeks with Generations Blurr. Blurr is one of those figures I had been anticipating from the conventions. All the pictures I’d seen of him looked pretty good. But sometimes the hype of wanting a figure just doesn’t pay off. Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a decent figure. But there’re just a couple things about him that really stick out to me and keep me from enjoying him entirely.

I remember Blurr from when I was a kid. I always thought the idea of a speedster Transformer was interesting, and I loved how he spoke super fast, but I didn’t really care for him as a character. Also, I didn’t really like his bot mode. His vehicle mode was this sleek looking futuristic car/plane thing, while his robot mode looked like a bunch of boxes piled on top of each other. The flat arrow look just didn’t translate.

It wasn’t until his introduction into the Transformers Animated series that I really began to like him. Not only did I enjoy his personality more because I was older, but I also really appreciated that all the other Transformers, Autobots and Decepticons, could barely understand him. Coupling his nearly unintelligible words with the fact that he was an intelligence agent really made for great character dichotomy.

Plus, the dude was fast. He was so fast that you couldn’t see him transform. He was so fast that he could achieve escape velocity by running. He was so fast that he actually ran through space, bouncing off any bit of planet, or debris, or Starscream in his way and gaining speed from it. Dude was fast, and all that speed was reflected in his streamlined and pointy design.

Generations Blurr is based off his latest appearance in the IDW comic books. I have to be honest. I haven’t read those so I’m not exactly sure what his characterization is like. The back of his package reveals that he’s a sniper. It also mentions that he’s not impatient, but that he’s just always in a hurry to get places, help people, and kill Decepticons. The sniper choice is interesting. If he really does have super speed, it would make sniping incredibly boring but really easy. I don’t know about cutting the fact that he’s impatient though. I always felt that was integral to his personality. Continue to Page 2…

Blurr shares the same body as Drift with a few minor changes. I love the cool blue shades that they used to color him. It really makes him stand out from Drift’s white. Also, in vehicle mode he has a much lower spoiler, and in robot mode his head is obviously different. This is one of the areas I’m not entirely happy with the figure though. The body itself works fine, but I always think of Blurr as futuristic and streamlined. The Drift body’s car mode is modern but not futuristic. While Drift’s robot mode is kind of clunky with those huge shoulder pads, thick thighs, and doors hanging down to his side. It works well for Drift, but seems a little cumbersome for the super fast Blurr. I do really like the fact that the bottoms of his feet have treads like a speedster’s boots though.

One of the benefits of sharing Drift’s body is that Blurr has fantastic articulation. He’s got a ball jointed head, shoulders, wrists, and hips. His elbows, knees, and ankles are hinge joints, while his biceps and thighs have swivel cuts. With this kind of movement you can basically give him any pose you want. This really comes in handy with his sniper rifle.

Instead of the three swords that Drift came with, Blurr gets guns! He has his sniper rifle that can clip onto his back for storage. The rifle itself is pretty snazzy with a ton of sculpted details. Plus, he can hold it with one hand, or you can flip out the swivel handle so he can hold it like an M56 “Smart Gun”. The door holsters hold two more pistol guns that he can duel wield. I’d like to think this is also a reference to the Old West gunfighters, since Blurr would be a fast draw. The designers didn’t stop there though. The two pistols can also fit on the end of his rifle giving it added firepower and a stand for the end of the barrel, like a real sniper rifle. That’s pretty awesome.

I’m really hopping in the future we’ll see a modernized version of the G1 Blurr because this figure’s a little too bulky to be perfect for me. But the figure itself is a good toy and representation of the comic book version. I really love the care that went into designing his three guns. And he just looks great standing there in a badass pose. So he’s definitely worth the money for just being a great toy.

For more Transformers Reviews, check out our Review Index.

Transformers week races on and it’s my turn to deliver the next review.
