I do. I not only spent all weekend being abused by toy companies long term plans to take my money, I foolishly vowed to have the IAT Checklists updated before the weekend was out (they are!), Once I was done, I remembered there was still that little matter of Armchair Coverage…

Before I get into any of the nitty gritty, I want to give a huge shout out to the folks that attended this year. For those of us that are unable to attend, they make this weekend miserable for our wallets instead of just miserable for us. It feels like more sites attended than normal this year and coverage came back very quickly. Some of the coverage is getting so well-organized that I almost wonder if Armchair Coverage is even going to be needed next year.

Page 1 – Marvel, Captain America, Thor, GI Joe, Transformers, & Star Wars
Page 2 – MOTU, Action League, JLU, DC Classics, Young Justice, & DC Direct
Page 3 – Thundercats, Power Rangers, Ghostbusters, NECA, Tonner, Cars, & Universal Monsters
Areas denoted in red have been updated for Tuesday.

I’m going to start with Hasbro because they simply blew me away on Saturday. Not only is the line veering back towards updated figures of my 80s favorites, but they sprung for an all-new Skystriker (the original mold was destroyed/lost years ago) and to make it that much more appealing, it’s getting a Transformers Starscream redeco. That news shot through the internet so quick, I think we all knew within minutes! It’s pretty cool even if it doesn’t transform. The SDCC version will be piloted by Cobra Commander and he comes with a Megatron pistol to boot.

After I calmed down a bit from that TF/Joe combo, there were a great mix of Joes to check out including updated versions of Sci-Fi, Crazylegs, the last Storm Shadow you’ll ever need, a Techno-Viper (!!!), and Steel Brigade. I honestly couldn’t pick one to be most excited about. There’s a few others I didn’t mention (including some Renegades stuff, Zarana, and a sweet new Hazmat Viper!) so check out HissTank for Press Pics & Booth Pics.

Transformers

Honestly, I think Transformers was the one area where I wanted to look and find some cool stuff, but I got lost in all the sub-lines. There was Mech Tech, Cyberverse, Prime, Dark of the Moon, Robopower, Rescue Bots, Kre-O, and eleventy billion others I can’t remember. I’m glad that one of my favorite properties is clearly doing very, very well, but I didn’t always know what I was looking at.

I did notice a curious lack of Generations-esque stuff. With Kup, Wreck-Gar, Scourge, etc., hitting stores, I wanted more of the same and didn’t find it because the overall line appears to be transitioning back to movie product. I did read that more Generations were in the pike though, so here’s hoping.

Some stuff did catch me eye like the little Kre-O minifigures (think G1-styled Lego dudes) and this awesome Sentinel Prime (pictured right, click on the image to see the bot mode). That gobbedly gook on his cab in alt mode has to go, but he looks cool otherwise. My suggestion for TF coverage is to just hit up TFW2005’s Toy Fair category and poke around.

Star Wars

I realized some time back that I’m anti-George Lucas. It’s just that Lucas has all the time & money for Star Wars and I don’t have enough of either, so I just can’t keep up with the line these days. You might notice a curious lack of pics on this page compared to the first one. Well, shortly after most sites had beamed back their coverage of the Hasbro panel & booth yesterday, Hasbro Press Kit images came rolling in. Because of that, the IAT Checklists for Marvel Universe, Captain America, & Thor were updated, image filled, and ready to go the same day as the panel. I mean Artemis!

The Robin looked odd, but the Artemis and Aqualad really impressed me. I love Aqualad in the cartoon (especially when compared to the boring mess of an Aqualad in Brightest Day), so that figure appeals to me more than a comic version would. Plus, he looks good, comes with a cool base and a ton of accessories to boot. I think both he and Artemis will blend in well with my DCUC crop (Robin won’t without a headswap though). The smaller animated line looks okay, but I haven’t checked in on the JLU collectors to see if they see them as compatible, they don’t look it to me. Superwoman, Owlman, & Ultraman are modern versions and look awesome while Johnny Quick & Power Ring are classic versions that look okay. Not sure why they’re mixed (are the SA Power Ring & Johnny back because Hal & Barry are back? lame, but possible), but it’s a cool set nonetheless. I still want the other two modern figures and I definitely still want a classic Owlman. I still haven’t been able to sort out my feelings about the MOTU reveals. We saw the scheduled figures through August:

Faceless One (June) – I was a bit disappointed by this one. He looks cool, but they gave him a nose and mouth, so he’s kinda Sortaface One instead. He does include the ram stone and a havoc staff, so that’s cool.

Battleground Teela (June) – Hot damn! IAT’s 2010 Most Requested Figure is already on the books! This Teela was the best looking MOTU figure shown today. I think she was the coolest thing I saw in the Mattel coverage today.

Clawful (July) – Below the neck? I was really happy with the figure. I liked the fading on the arms, the scaly pieces, and the claw. But, much like Whiplash, the vintage just head doesn’t appeal to me. A new modern 4H take on a second hand would’ve really helped this figure.

Man-E-Faces (Aug) – He’s straight-up vintage, includes his gun and a secret accessory, but one cool thing is that his Final Deco will be voted on by fans. You guys should all vote orange and not pale. Thanks!

Megator (Aug) – I know I sound like a downer and I promise I did enjoy the reveals, but I just can’t get excited for this guy. Tytus was such a disappointment that I know Megator won’t be worth the price (and I’m already locked in to buying him). He does include a secret accessory, so maybe that’ll lessen the sting.

ToyArk has two MOTU galleries up with tons of images.

A few other items were there too like our first look at the red weapons on April’s Weapons rack as well as the next MOTU vs DC 2pk: She-Ra versus Supergirl. Neither figure “received development” which means there’ll be no review of it here at IAT. Finally, the reveal of Megator as a Q3 item means that Swift Wind is indeed Q4 and Mattel mentioned that a new She-Ra will be coming out the same day. The difference? The new She-Ra will be able to ride Swift Wind.

Continue to Page 3 of Toy Fair 2011 Armchair Coverage

Thundercats

In case you’ve missed it, Thundercats is finally… roaring (sorry)… back onto toy shelves. I could see picking up Bandai’s Classic Lion-O if we were MOTU compatible, but, at 8″, it’s not a likely purchase unless I want him to fight Hellboy or my Diamond TNG figures. Anyway, all your TCats needs can be met at the newly minted Thundercats.ws!

Power Rangers

And while we’re talking about Bandai… we did see that Rita Repulsa figure in TNI’s Power Rangers gallery. Can you say Most Requested?? Of course, we would’ve liked her better without the tiny head and huge hands, but beggars can’t be choosers…

CTR has a full look at the Bandai Showroom.

Ghostbusters

There wasn’t much to see Ghostbusterswise… at least not from Mattel. They mostly showed progressed items from SDCC (Vinz in his package, the corrected GB 2 Winston (score that one for the collectors), and the 12″ doll prototypes). They debuted the kitbashed Labcoat Egon. He does come with a nifty Library Ghost though!

Diamond’s Minimates are another story entirely. Diamond has moved onto Real Ghostbusters merchandise and debuted a crapton of minifigures. ProtonCharging has pics of the little guys including the four main Ghostbusters, Lewis & Janine both in office attire and uniforms, and a boatload of the series main ghosts – Sandman, Boogeyman, Samhain! I keep trying not to buy minimates, but that’s an awesome collection.

Also, there’s an upcoming Ghostbusters Bishoujo (via TNI) statue coming out for Ghostbusters too.

Tonner Dolls

Tonner is one of those companies I don’t know much about aside from seeing a few of their dolls in person and the pics online. They have a wide array of properties though and CTR has a full look at their booth. I like the Dove. I’d be interested to see her and Hawk done in metallic colors for DCUC.

DC Retro Action Superheroes

I don’t buy these, but Kyle Rayner in his 90s outfit (via AFP)? CTR has full coverage of their booth.

Cars

There’s eleventy million Cars toys already, so companies are apparently going to great lengths to come up with novel ways to keep us buying them. Elkk Thunders Toy Room has pics and video of two such cars. A (relatively) normal sized die-cast Lightning McQueen that drives around and talks (it’s mouth and eyes move too) and a Finn McMissile that drives on walls. The Lightning is available for preorder at Matty right now, but the price tag may just kill this little project – he’s $60. Ouch.

Universal Monsters

Figures.Com has some images of this year’s Universal Monster figures from DST. Toy Fair isn’t over and there’s certainly a few other items I’ll be adding to this coverage until it is (there’s already a couple links I know I’ll be adding later in the day). We’ve been doing a lot of event coverage this week: WonderFest, Tamashii Features, and Toy Fair, but our reviews will return tomorrow. I’m not sure what Vault has on tap for Tuesday, but Wednesday will feature the long overdue review of the second MOTU Weapons Pack (yep, we head back to ye olde weapon shop).

Before I go, I have to thank that sites that put in the time, travel, and hard work to cover the show: AFI, AFP, CTR, ElkkThundersToyRoom, Figures, HISS Tank, Marvelous News, MillionairePlayboy, PoeGhostal, Rebelscum, Thundercats.ws, ToyArk, TFW2005, & TNI!

Got that morning after feeling?
