<\/a>So, did everyone get what they wanted for Christmas? Raise your hand if you asked for peace on earth, but settled for toys! It’s up to me to kick off IAT\u2019s first review of the new year and nothing says Happy New Year better than a giant radioactive pteranodon. You guessed it, Sci-Fi Revoltech #19: Rodan.<\/p>\n

Rodan first appeared on the kaiju scenes with his own self titled movie in 1956, becoming Toho\u2019s third classic monster after Godzilla and Anguirus. Interestingly, there were two Rodan\u2019s in that first film. A mating pair who were disturbed by the real monster\u2026 MAN. They were both killed, but their offspring survived to fight Godzilla to a standstill and then later join forces with him and Mothra in defeating the first King Ghidorah.<\/p>\n

Rodan was sculpted by Watanabe Yuki, and I have to say he\u2019s damn near perfect. Looking at the Sci-Fi line in general, I haven\u2019t been disappointed with any of the figures I\u2019ve gotten. Even if the articulation isn\u2019t always there (but it usually is), I\u2019m still satisfied by the sculpt. Some of the best examples of this are in the kaiju characters. These characters are the perfect mix between what these monsters would look like in real life and a guy in a big rubber costume.<\/p>\n

Something else I love about this line is that you notice small details or influences that you might have missed as a 2D image on a screen. With Rodan, I never realized how much his spiky torso resembles the armor of a samurai. This gives a little more intimidation to a figure that basically resembles a giant featherless chicken.<\/p>\n

Rodan has the biggest wings of the three flying monsters they\u2019ve made so far. They\u2019re made out of a soft and rubbery plastic that almost feels like the leather of a bat\u2019s wing. The sculpted detail is superb with the stretched and veiny look. Plus, there\u2019s a thin wire running through the outer rim of each wing, allowing you to twist and fold them into a more realistic pose.<\/p>\n

Rodan\u2019s paint job is detailed yet basic. His entire body is molded brown with a dry wash of black filling in the tiny pores of his skin and wrinkles in his wings. This also adds and extra layer of depth to the layered armor of his chest. His beak and horns have been given a lighter, almost sand colored tone which distinguishes it from the rest of his brown face. My favorite tiny paint detail is his eyes though. They\u2019re a glossy black, which gives his face a sense of realism. Yet you don\u2019t always see it through the shadow cast by the brim of his forehead.<\/p>\n

Rodan\u2019s shoulders, waist, hips, and ankles are all revolver joints. The wrists of his tiny hands are swivel\/hinges while his jaw and knees are hinge joints. Rodan\u2019s neck is a double revolver joint. This allows him to look straight down, but because of the neck pieces around the joint he can\u2019t look straight up. Normally this wouldn\u2019t be such a big deal, but without the ability look up he can\u2019t assume a proper flying pose. Instead, you get something that resembles a belly flop pose. I was also a bit disappointed with Rodan\u2019s accessories. Besides the orange box and black placard, there\u2019s the baby Rodan figure. This figure is similar to the baby version of Gyaos. I don\u2019t mind getting these baby figures, but I wish the line was more consistent with it. Why do Gyaos and Rodan get their infant forms while Mothra doesn\u2019t?<\/p>\n

Rodan\u2019s only other accessory is a building for him to stand on\/crush, straight from a scene in the original movie. The building is nicely detailed with stress and fracture marks running throughout the two front sides, while the back resembles layers of rubble. Normally I wouldn\u2019t care about a building, but this one has an action feature. There is a joint in the middle which allows you to display it like it\u2019s broken in half. There are also two small ball joints on top which lets you put a hole in the roof. Rodan can then either be displayed standing on the roof or hovering above with the aid of a small metal rod.<\/p>\n

My biggest complaint with the accessories is actually the lack of a specific one. This is the third kaiju in the Sci-Fi series, possibly fourth if you count Gamera. But so far, only Gyaos has received a normal flying stand. To display Mothra and Rodan in flying poses you need to use their building bases. I really like displaying all my monsters together, but the buildings throw things out of whack. You end up with a sky scraper, the Tokyo Tower, and a log cabin all being the same size. A regular clear stand would go a long way in making those group shots nearly perfect.<\/p>\n

Rodan\u2019s not my favorite character, but he\u2019s one of the original three. Plus, even without a flying stand his figure looks fantastic and fits right in with the rest of my growing Monster Island population. So if you\u2019re a kaiju fan, or even a Rodan fan, I\u2019m going to suggest you pick this figure up. He\u2019ll run you about $30, but with the quality of the product you still get your money\u2019s worth. Now I just have to find a brand of stands that will let me display these guys properly. Any suggestions?<\/p>\n
