Would You or Wouldn't You (The Art of Toy Buying)

For all the lines not covered in our themed forums. Think Thundercats, Ghostbusters, Voltron, Wrestling, Doctor Who, Power Rangers, Video Game Licenses, TV & Film Licenses... do I need to go on or did you have it figured out before I even started?

Would You or Wouldn't You (The Art of Toy Buying)

Postby NoisyDvL5 » Tue Oct 19, 2010 6:55 pm

I had this silly idea for a thread, though it might be a downer.

Basically, my toy wants/eyes far, far, I mean really far, outweigh my toy needs. If I found a bunch of money and unlimited space, IAT would cover Joes, TFs, Hot Toys, Marvel Toys, etc, the way we cover DC & MOTU. I love toys, but I often have to reign myself in at the store. Sometimes due to money, sometimes due to space, sometimes just because.

So I thought I'd start a thread about recent buying decisions I've encountered (and you folks can do the same).

G1 Ultra Magnus. In great condition, very clean, but missing one shoulder missile. $25.

So... would you or wouldn't you?

Nah I have no interest in getting stuff like that.

I generally don't have buyer's remorse. The only time I do get it is when I buy something I never really wanted in the first place, i just felt I had to have it.

I would jump on that in heartbeat, but mostly because it's great trading fodder. Pay $25 and take it to a shop or forum and get twice as much or more in trade? Decision pretty much makes itself.

Trading is an amazing thing and being a serious toy collector for over 20 years now I can't believe it took me this long to discover. I bought an '87 Mattel toy fair catalog last fall for $12 (yeah.....I know ) and traded it to a guy for 8 MIB MotUC figs, only 4 of which I needed for my collection. The rest went to trades, where I was able to trade up for other stuff and kept trading & trading for more stuff at a steady incline of value (like 5 MOC 7th Kingdom Mynotaurs), so realistically I've been trading off of that $12 investment for over a year now.

So yes, Magnus would be mine, albeit for a relatively short period of time.

I would definately jump on that Ultra Magnus. If it strikes yer fancy and you have the dough for it...i say grab it. I personally have never been into Transformers, but if its something yer passionate about...go for it. I've been a toy collector for almost 30 years and have passed up on a bunch of things when i was younger that i kick myself for not grabbing it when i could have. I've also gotten rid of things that i shouldnt have (complete Clash of the Titans collection)

When it comes to new toys i'm much more critical with what i buy. Being a die hard DC comics fan it was hard to pass up on the DCIH line...but i had to...same with the Action League figures. Older toys on the other hand....i rarely pass up on things.

All good points... And now for the reveal... I... did not buy it.

Okay, I've got another one. Still Transformers.

my great weakness is playsets more than figures... i can resist figures for all kinds of "practical" reasons and nary miss a beat... show me a steal on a playset, and i melt. right now, my playset kingdom pretty much boils down to snake mountain, castle grayskull, the fright zone, and fort kerium... but if i found a steal on the hyve or the castle of lions or god forbid, the defiant? oh... i might go do something drastic.

I would pay 25 for a classic jetfire. That is a good get at that price.
