MOTU fanfic, however you like it

Postby dayraven » Sun May 26, 2013 8:11 pm

being a fan of writing, and of motu, i tend to combine those things... much to the chagrin of those who don't like ponderous reading. [smile] i used another thread to post some revised bios and stuff, but as that thread has kind of become an all purpose discussion thread, i figured i'd create a new and more designated place for people's fanfic. if you guys are anything like me, you think about these characters and settings often, and are usually disappointed in what mattel creates, but inspired by other fans.

anyways, here's my "personal canonical writing" to explain the origin of my upcoming custom castle... but i tried to draw mostly on some established ideas and put them together in an interesting way, rather than wholesale creating my own universe out of the extant mythos. so like, there are a couple names and descriptions that are all me, but there are references to motuc-canon events and character relations that this should be pretty accessible. for my castle purposes, i've settled on something very much NOT the mark taylor prototype, and so, i wanted to explain why that would leave two castles. enjoy.

Chapter 1- just after the Second Ultimate Battleground
"We are undone!" Mekaneck yelled as he stomped the ground beneath him. "How are we supposed to fight back now that Skeletor has seized Castle Grayskull? Were there even any survivors? How many of us are left?" Panic was beginning to override his sanity, but one figure stepped forward, assuring him and calming him with his steadfast demeanor.

"Calm yourself Mekaneck. He-Man survived, that is the best news I can offer, but it should do. He was the lynchpin of our eventual success and he yet stands. Now that he has tasted defeat, it is a repast he will fight harder to avoid re-injesting. Our forces were also not fully mustered, and the Sorceress contacted all of them prior to that battle. Anyone who couldn't make it there was instructed where to go. We are not yet put to rout." He-Ro's tone was even and his deep baritone voice did much to alleviate nerves.

"Bu-but... how do you know this? How can you be sure?" Mekaneck inquired.

"I have my ways," responded He-Ro as he tapped the ground with his great wand. "When He-Man returns, we will escort him to the proper Castle. There, we can muster our forces again and counterattack in earnest before Skeletor learns of the ruse."

"Wait, what? 'Proper Castle?' What does that mean?"

"It means Skeletor, and Hordak by extension, bought the ruse. They've been struggling to capture a red herring, a MacGuffin deployed nearly 6000 years ago by the King and I to protect Eternia's most precious resource, the one and true Castle Grayskull. Eldor suggested we keep the true Castle's existence a secret, and thus, we built the Castle that has been all the rage since that time. Eldor spent the last of his life enchanting the Castle which Skeletor now 'controls' to attract attention and lure the ambitious to her gates. We put the Sorceress there as a ruse as well, what good is a trap without bait after all? But she knows, as does each of her predecessors, they are in communication with the spirit of Grayskull, the true voice of the one and proper Castle Grayskull. She knew what had to be done and sacrificed herself so that her daughter Teela would ascend to her position as Sorceress."

"I don't know what to say here He-Ro." Mekeneck was despondent and baffled. Suddenly, he felt a strong grip upon his shoulder and was reassured by the touch of the mighty Dekker. Man at Arms was the best man Mekaneck had known, and he had trusted Dekker completely, so by extension, Mekaneck felt affection for the old warmaster despite not knowing him all that well.

"Relax Mekaneck, all is going to be all right. I haven't known these men very long, but I know truth when I hear it and this guy" Dekker nodded towards He-Ro "He speaks the truth. Soldiers are often asked to fight for reasons they don't entirely understand, they have to have faith in their leaders that the right calls are being made. I believe that to be the case right now."

"Right Dekker, thank you for the vote of confidence. Please understand Mekaneck, we felt it was best to perpetrate a ruse, the more elaborate the better, to keep the forces of evil from finding the true Castle and it's true power. Let me ask you, in all the debate you've heard in the last few years from King Randor and the Council, and the numerous times we've faced off against Skeletor, have you ever heard the phrase 'Master of the Universe?' "

"Well of course. Why do you ask?"

"Castle Grayskull is a unique entity in the known Universe. It's a unique culmination of cutting edge technology, magical artifact, and geomantic confluence that creates transdimensional permanent wormhole. The true Castle would allow anyone with access to it to travel effortlessly to any dimension in the known universe. It would truly enable one to become Master of the Universe. We already know that there are space faring creatures, like the Horde, who journey world to world and conquer every culture they come into contact with. That takes time and massive resources, and thank the Engineer that it does, or their sheer numbers would have swarmed over us some millennia ago. Imagine though a being, like He-Man, reinforced with magical might, able to simply be there, to defend any planet at any time. The Trollans felt this represented a great tool, but the Cosmic Enforcers saw another possibility, a much darker one, in which some villainous overlord could knife the leaders of every civilization known in the span of a single afternoon. King Grayskull and I agreed with that dire prediction. At that time, on Eternia, there was no Castle, but an artifact, the Heart of the Universe, we called it. A fraction of its power lay in the Star Seed currently protected by Procrustus, if that offers any sense of scale for you. That artifact was held in a vast and terrible desert, a place so arid and desolate that it was hoped it would require little guardianship. Tytus and King Grayskull erected two towers to protect the artifact, but we could find none willing to man them for the long spans we knew would lie between threats. Eldor devised a spell with the aid of Sharella to create from whole stone two guardians, one for each tower, who could not only raise alarm if a threat loomed, but could face the threat themselves as a first response. Each was given the terrible visage of a great stone skull to frighten intruders. Sharella was the first to notice that the Towers each lay on a ley line in that desert, and thus, she used geomantic spellcraft from each tower to enervate the Guardians. The Heart lay, by pure act of cosmic coincidence, directly over the intersection of those two ley lines. Time passed, and none came for the Heart, until a fateful day. An ancient evil from Eternia's past resurfaced, and though it was put down relatively quickly, it's actions awakened a terrible beast, one of the long dead creation brothers who had forged Eternia and all the realms from their own flesh and will; Scalex, Horror of Fin and Fang. No longer properly alive, yet, unable to be killed in any conventional sense, the creature sought out the Heart, it's own heart, that could make it whole again. It was a mindless thing, driven by naught but hatred and a lust for an unnatural life that the greater Universe had already stripped from it. The Trollans contacted us immediately upon its awakening, as it's might radiated through the spheres of magic like ripples upon a pond disturbed by a thrown stone. They commanded that we intervene and attempt to put the beast down, and they dispatched two Cosmic Enforcers to us for aid. They were defeated offhand as the beast crossed the desert, for it's might, even in death, was malignant and without relent.

When it arrived at the towers, the two golem guardians slowed its progress until a method was found to slay it, more or less, for perpetuity, hence the Plains of Perpetua. It is in this location that the Castle I speak of, the true Castle, is found, on the unique time and space distorting plains of Perpetua. The castle you and your allies have defended time and again from various depredations is indeed important, please don't feel as though you've wasted your time, as you have not. It is an entirely other thing though, and houses no power of its own. Instead, it is an elaborate mouse trap, and evidently, Skeletor is the mouse du jour. We anticipated that some great threat might penetrate the Castle one day, but she's designed to keep one in even more vigorously than she's designed to repel invaders. With luck, Skeletor will never emerge from that Castle again. That is why we always insisted that you and your comrades only enter the Castle when accompanied by the Sorceress, for were you to enter unaccompanied, your body would likely never be found. There are numerous magical wards, fifth dimensional rooms, sensory manipulation devices, and good old fashioned booby traps to entertain the most enterprising genius for a century. That was deliberate."

"So... we were defending a ruse, a trap to lure Skeletor in, and our involvement in that was what sold the trap? We thought it held great power, so he did too, and thus, he kept going after the Castle we all knew while the real Castle is safe and sound somewhere in the Plains of Perpetua? That's... really elaborate. And kind of hard to believe."

Chapter 2

"He speaks the truth!" Bellowed King Grayskull, entering the cave accompanied by He-Man and Battle Cat. As they entered, Sharella herself slithered in behind them, accompanied by Sir Laser Lot, Vikor, Buzz Off, and Ram Man. Ram Man's silhouette seemed to devour the entrance to the cave where the band was seeking refuge. Mekaneck's heart though was glad to see his friend, especially after the losses of Duncan and Stratos. He wondered what had become of Moss Man, no one had seen nor heard from him in almost a week now. His attention though was drawn abruptly back to King Grayskull as he shook He-Ro's hand. The collision of the two arms was nearly deafening, as was their hearty laugh afterwards. Mekaneck braced himself though, activating the sonic dampers in his helmet to protect him from again taking the sonic explosion as He-Man clapped arms with both the former King and former Cosmic Enforcer. Each man's grip was like the snapping jaws of some primordial beast, and the thunderous decompression of their hand clap would have felled the average Eternian with burst ear drums. Luckily for Mekaneck, he was no ordinary Eternian.

King Grayskull turned to the host "This one always leaves out the most compelling part of that tale. Perhaps a more gifted orator need expound on the telling, lending great intellect and silver tongue to tale most heroic!" He laughed good naturedly, and He-Ro laughed with him, though his body language shrunk for a moment under the embarrassment of his friend's words. "Now, he left out a detail that requires unveiling: I was far to the South at the time dealing with yet another incursion of Snake Men into Gar lands. It is unknown what prize they sought, or if they were simply feeding, but it matters not. What matters is that Eternia's TRUE champion was otherwise unavailable to assist against this demon! This left the fate of our beloved realm in the hands of the Mightiest Bookworm. Faced with no real option, our man He-Ro here turned to the desert by himself. He rode fast and hard, unfortunately killing his griffin in the riding, trying to arrive before the beast did. Instead, mighty 'Ro ends up on a stack within eyesight of the Towers just as the beast arrives. Now, I gather this story from the golem themselves, and they are far from talented storytellers, but they do get their facts correct, so let me paint the scene: Scalex' corpse is rotted down to almost nothing, a great battling beast of bone with but bits of fetid meat hanging from it like sail tatters in a storm. The creature is nearly a mile tall and wields stench like a weapon that even from his distance, brings He-Ro's great azure eyes to weep as a river in flood. The vile leviathan's twin backbones supported 8 terrible legs, each of those equipped with five stone-rending talons, and from each backbone, a spire of a spine equipped with the most lethal poison in existence. The spines are dripping in the vial, viscous mucus, leaving a fomorous trail behind it that would coagulate into a befunked billabong and spawn several of Eternia's most lethal Serpent Pits. The belligerent bellowing of the beast was so clamorous that it could only be drowned out by a Ram Man fart."

This elicited a round of laughter from everyone, even those still arriving from a hard fought battle. As the chorus of laughs echoed through the cave, Mekaneck saw a very haggard Zodak limp into the cave, carrying with him, or perhaps being carried by, it was hard to tell, an even worse looking Fisto. Fisto's new battlefist was wrecked, and he bore slashes that earmarked him as a foe of Jitsu, lethal master of martial arts and owner of one of the more hideously sharp swords on Eternia. Zodak bore the blasted oxidized scars on his body and armor that recalled a battle with one of the spellcasters, perhaps Marzo or Evil Lyn. He looked drained physically and spiritually, but the laughter of his comrades buoyed him somewhat, as it did for Fisto.

Grayskull got back to the story now, and again, his deep resonant voice called all to attention.

"He-Ro looked 'round for something, anything, some way he could stop the creature from advancing, but he had nothing, no mount to cover the distance, nor a rifle with which to make a shot. Besides, he'd need something a lot more powerful than a laser to slow this antedeluvian monstrosity. His epiphany came at remembering the words of his own master, Eldor, when advising throws as a tool of combat, that the largest weapon one possessed with which to strike an opponent was the ground. Realizing that what he need lay 'neath his weathered leather boots, he leapt down the mountainside till he stood at her base. With nary sound nor self-doubt, he sheared off the mountain from her root with a single arcing slash of the Blade of He. He anchored his fingers deep into the mountain's flesh, and drawing upon all the might at his command, he hoisted the entirety of the massive mighty mountain upon broadest chest, and thence, hurled it with singular and deadly purpose. In his hand, she'd become a missile; in his intent, a lethal one. The mountain roared to life as air was split in twain at her passing, and the missile most monolithic crashed fiercely and struck true to her aim, blasting the beast directly in the face with stony certainty. He-Ro leapt after his missile, bounding up and down as cork on the ocean, trying to arrive as quickly as he could. The mountain's lethal impact scattered bone bits, vial ichor, and stone shards for miles around. The two defense towers were nearly swallowed by the debris and both of their guardians were forced to the roof to continue the defense of the Heart. But the creature's lunge had set it atop the artifact, and even the force of the mountain did not stray it from its course. Unconscious though it was, the beast had its Heart! Terrified of what may occur if he let it awaken and command the Heart's power again, He-Ro moved like a man possessed. His massive thews propelled him skyward as he leapt atop the great beast, and once mounted upon it's crown, he plunged the blade of He to her hilt deep in the beast's skull. But this being foreboding Scalex, it was hurt not at all. It was the founder of the Sea, father of Dragons and Mother of the Crabs, and it was unmoved by the sword blow, even from a blade so mighty as that of He. It scoffed at death, and lived even while dead, what had it to fear from one puny man and his puny sword? It slowly began to stir 'neath 'Ro's feet. Seeking a solution, and finding only one, he whispered the only words of the battle that he tendered, and I tell them to you now as the golems told them to me... He stood upright, raised his Great Wand aloft and channeled all the arcane might at his command into the headstone and spoke strong and clear: "I'm canceling your Apocalypse" and with that, he slammed the headstone into the buttcap of the blade and fired through it a blast of pure eldritch might. The Trollans, who were not physically present for the battle, would later admonish him for unleashing such potency 'pon Eternia's soil. Even the likes of the mighty titan could not withstand such holy and unrelenting force, so what was left of his corpsefortress erupted away from the blast. Bits of the beast are found today all over Eternia, and it is rumored that a tooth was once found in Despondos. All that remained of the beast was the remnants of it's awesome skull and a few bits of vertebrae. Let it be known, by one and all, 'twas awesome and deservedly named He-Ro that saved us all that day and forged what was to become the one true Castle Grayskull."

I for one uphold the original Mattel mini-comic story concepts, proposed POG story concepts, and Filmation story concepts. I say concepts because there is no real continuity between them all, and I view them as simply elements that could be interpreted as or incorporated into various alternate universes. Most of all, I uphold them because they are vintage and they are what I grew up with. I don't try to make sense of any of those elements because It would just drive me crazy. I'm not a fan of the whole Prince Adam identity thing, but I uphold it, as well as the Oo-lar concept which completely contradicts the Adam thing. I like what you did here though, but I prefer to have no canon and just a few alternate versions of the universes... and I COMPLETELY disregard any 200X characters, story elements and bios created by Neitlich, and modern comic book writers.

really? cuz some of the 220x characters/story elements i really like, such as the inclusion of dekker, the larger role/characterization of count marzo and evil seed, and the general fleshing out of eternia as areas with distinct cultures and peoples. you look back now on the early mini-comics, and while i love those too, that's my era, they don't flesh out a very peopled or traveled eternia... and how can one become master of the universe if there are only 12 people to start with on an isolated planet? hell, mini-ternia didn't even have ice. the place was not well defined and it's significance (i think) left deliberately hazy, up to the kid to determine. by extension, that's what i love about reading other people's fanfic and about posting my own, engaging in the conversation that shares what we all came up with on our own. [smile]

examples: one gent, who shall remain nameless unless he chooses to do otherwise, used to keep his toys strictly segregated, transformers with transformers, he-man with he-man, etc... me? i couldn't imagine NOT crossing my toys over, if he-man couldn't have fought secret wars magneto, and then had to ally with optimus prime to stop defenders of the earth phantom from super-charging swamp thing into a world beating elemental, well, i just don't know how i'd have made it through the day. but this friend's form of play fascinates me. i know another gent who used to imagine his figs as food avatars, so for example, beast man was oranges, and if he fought two-bad, he would have been fighting grape and blueberry. that's almost borderline insane, but it's cool as balls cuz that was his world, his invention. despite the notion that the toy companies were selling the images of these toys to us wholesale every saturday morning, the truth is, we all invented and innovated as we wanted, and none of us it seems were completely sold on the prescribed way and style of play that the toy companies presented us.

By no means am I knocking 200X, I actually like what they did to sort of bring MOTU into a more adult oriented realm of storytelling even though it doesn't exist in my canon, and it's cool how it inspires fans to create their own extensions of that world. But IMO, Toyguru's bios and any applicable story elements that he has introduced into the world, along with the new comic book series are either too unoriginal or just trying too hard. I think it's best for every fan to create their own canon, and somehow I think Mattel intended that over the years, which is why they kept their story elements so basic.

Nifty stuff, DR. Look forward to seeing what the backstory brings forth, building-wise.

A coruscating synchronicity of light, sound and some oddly palpable scent filled the small space around He-Man. It was rather as he envisioned the instant before he struck someone with his Thunder Punch, from their perspective. The light seemed to throb slightly, not quite in time with his pulse, but very close to it, like it was syncopating. The sound waves were very much like the dull roar of an ocean, but from just at the edge of hearing distance, and it ebbed and flowed back and forth, again, not in time with the light, but not in time with his own circadian vibrations either. But that odd scent... it was comforting, like Teela's hair or a freshly baked cookie, and yet, unlike any scent he had ever sampled before, it had mass, weight, as if thick and viscous to the point of being buoyant. Within the field of it's influence, he felt weightless and easy, like his muscles needn't strain to move his bones and as if his organs floated freely within his body, considering his flesh a mere nuisance of restraint. It oozed in and out of his nostrils as he breathed, thick like pudding and sweet like a dream. It lifted him from his feet and seemingly filled the space around him until he could tell neither up from down, nor right from left.

His eyes seemed to threaten a revolt if he did not fixate some object over his sight, as the pulsing light was threatening to wash out his vision forever. He reluctantly closed his eyes, and was greeted in his mind with every pleasant memory he had ever stored, all at once, all for the sheer joy of his heart. His father's rough beard upon his cheek, Cringer licking his toes, his mother's warm smile, the swell of Teela's breasts... everything just within recall's reach and as delicate as fine china. He grinned inwardly, a grin so pure and joyful that he was certain it shown through on his lips as well, but he could not know for sure. The smell rolled between his fingers, and scruffed his hair as Man at Arms had done to him countless times in his youth. He giggled and he could feel it ripple throughout the miasma that lifted him. The sensation lit all his nerves up gently, like a sudden leap into a warm pool. The noise he heard had shifted now, the gentle humming of whales singing their eternal and haunting cautions to all other species. No one ever listened to their lectures, yet onward they taught, and now he could feel their voices in his heard, singing merry greetings and well wishes, and praising the names of every calf born to the pod this year and proud dirges to their fallen brethren. The weight of their dignity sat on him and temporarily shadowed the light over his eyes. He was acutely aware that he must be a greater friend to the animals who's voices he could not understand, for all life was under his protection, not just his allies or his people. He wished he knew the whale speak to sing back to them, to reaffirm to them that they were heard and understood, but the smell changed, and it caressed the concern from him. They knew their place, and they knew they would be understood only by the wise and just. They didn't need a verbal response, and with this acknowledgement, his bliss returned and went to play across the landscape of his hugely muscled body leaving tiny shining footprints every so often across him. He recognized that the universe was within him, and on him, and outside him, and around him, all at once, just as the light and the sound and the scent were right now. He could only do what he could, and he must trust that the universe will cherish him while it has him, and forget him when he passes to the next dimension. It was oddly comforting to him.

Drowsiness now filled him, as he felt comforted and safe as a babe in the womb. Flexing like a cat on a hot rock, he relaxed all tension from his corpus and yawned deeply. A gentle voice echoed within the sound and said

"I have chosen you, championed you, from this day forward, marked you as a protector of life, for you have sown patience, wisdom, and justice to those around you. You will not remain pristine, you can not, all servants must, from time to time, sully themselves with activities and insights that the protected need not worry themselves over, but your core will remain true even when tested. This is why you are selected and ascended this day. All that you are is enhanced and insulated under me. I will protect you, even from yourself. In turn, you will act as you have and be a beacon of light to those who honor life and protect it. Carry with you this gift, that I empower your new sword to act as a channel for the potency of life and the ferocity of those who aim to keep it when threatened. It will bite better than any tiger, sing like an elephant, and fly fast as a shrike. It will alight in the presence of great evil to call out to the evil doer than their time is nigh. Lastly, if you lose it, you need only call out the name of your honored sword, and it will return to your hand. Do you accept this generous offer, accept the vigilance that it entails and the weight of the world that lies beneath it?"

"Yes, lord Stan-Dor, i pledge myself to your cause. Greater than the needs of Grayskull or Eternia are the needs of the sentient life throughout the universe, and myriad are the hordes of harvesters awaiting her reaping. With your patronage, those hordes will stand with dry mouth and empty stomach. Every hand that would hurt another will suffer fingers broken under the weight of justice, and every foot on the back of the innocent stall be split upon the adze. This swears I, He-Man of Eternia."

As the pledge rang out in his mind, it changed the color of the light, from peachy warm pinkish yellow to a gentle green of fertile fields. The smell became the warm tones of an oaken fire. The sound became the boisterous cheering of a multitude of voices. He-Man knew he was fulfilling his fullest potential with this pledge, and rising to the challenges that faced him, not as the Master of the Universe, but as her Protector. He drifted off to gentle sleep as Stan-Dor's vast cosmic power slowly lowered him to the bed within his own sleeping chambers. When he awoke, he may think this all only a dream, but he would know the truth of it once he drew his mighty blade again. Stan-Dor looked down on the championed and gently intoned, before departing for another dimension, "Excelsior my champion."
