Wun-Dar Review

Wun-Dar doesn’t have many paint apps, but the few he does have caused some minor problems on the figures IAT received. All four had black scuffmarks on the face or chin. We had hoped these would rub off, but after opening them, we realized this is the black plastic showing through. Yep, his head is molded in black. Iโ€™m glad the faces are painted in this line, but maybe the plastic color underneath the paint could be more carefully chosen?

The other questionable paint area is on the armor, the cosmic enforcer symbol. We know Mattel can do this properly, I have good paint on Zodac and Zodak, but that care wasn’t taken with any of our Wun-Dars. My favorite paint app is still the “wonder dots” on the exhaust of his jetpack.

This picture has a simple explanation. You can blame Samuron over at ActionFigurePics.Com. I was reading his excellent article about aging pics with Photoshop and I wanted to try it. Since Wun-Dar lived a hundred years before He-Man, he seemed to be a perfect candidate. I threw Scareglow in there because, even though we don’t exactly know when Karak Nul was trying to break into Grayskull, I think it’d be pretty sweet if these two turn out to be contemporaries. I really want to see more of Wun-Dar’s time period. But with the stupid notion that “new characters have to wait in line behind established ones”, we might never see more from Wun-Dar’s time. Still, I can hope. Maybe he fought Demo-Man? That’d be cool. For now, Scareglow will be his mortal enemy on my shelves.

Overall, I’m happy with Wun-Dar despite his strange origins and his being a cheap repaint. He’s a welcome addition to the MOTUverse and if you choose to display him with the Zodac gear, you’ve got a cool black sword to hand out. If you’ve been waiting to give someone black Zodac armor, Wun-Dar looks great with just the sword (& wait til you see him in the Beast Man armor from the Weapons Pak).

Since Wun-Dar was only available with the subscription and Mattel has stated that he’s on the short list of figures that will not be reissued, you’ll have to find him online, either through eBay or an online store that purchased subscriptions and has Wun-Dar available.

And don’t expect this release to clear up any of those old mysteries. His name, Wun-Dar, maybe an homage to the legend of the Wonder Bread He-Man, but it has a deeper meaning too. He’s an enigma and barring some information lost in an attic somewhere, he probably always will be.

Wun-Dar Review

  1. I had no interest in Wun-Dar until I saw a pics of him wearing the brown Beast Man armor from the Battle Pack. Damn, he looks slick.

    1. I saw that too. My weapons pack isn’t here yet, but I’m going to try it out.

Oh, man I have a lot of work to do for that review…

    1. On eBay! The seller didn’t know the origins, but I think it came from a Tyco refrigerator set that was Barbie-complimentary so to speak. Mattel used to have something similar, but the were made of solid plastic piece and painted like a bag.

I bought that bread back months ago when we thought Wun-Dar would be here in Feb. It’s been sitting here quietly, waiting to debut. I didn’t want to use it before he got here. LOL

  2. And I have to ask about that skeleton figure… There’s something about it that makes the design look familiar but that’s where I get lost.

(BTW, that was a lot of fun to read and I’m not just talking about the photos!)

    1. Thanks!

Below, Kyle is correct about the skeleton. It’s a GREAT piece. It’s technically too tall for MOTU but the dimensions work out with some of the armor and weapons. I keep it with my Mezco comic Hellboy stuff.

  3. Awesome pics! I loved the one with WD vs Scareglow. And the “why didn’t the Goddess…” are priceless!

    1. It was so hard waiting on those. We’ve been holding on to them since San Diego. And they kept pushing Wun-Dar back… LOL

      I’m glad you liked ’em!

  4. You’ve ruined Wun-Dar! He’ll always be the idiot He-Man after those last two pics!! LOL

  5. this stinkin’ repaint is growing on me… and i like the idea of a black sword of he… methinks i may have some mythosin’ to do… all these half-swords can’t ALL Be the sword of he!

  6. This whole ‘Sword Of He’ thing is crap….listen up Mattel, its ‘The Sword Of Greyskull’.
    Excellent review by the way.

  7. This figure is nice for novelty. But after the initial impression wears you’re just left with a boring He-Man repaint. Grayskull was at least a better exclusive and a far better designed figure with his intricate packaging.

Matty seems to be going the extra mile with the joke releases as of late. Adam as an accessory for Orko, Mo-Larr, and Wun-Dar’s bread accessory. Makes me wonder what they have dreamed up for the 2011 figure. Is it really Vikor? Or Beast Man done in a more savage form (is that even possible?) as Red Beast from the original “fighting foe men” concept?
